A trip to the local Swale stretch gave me eight grayling (three over a pound), five trout, two dace, a few errant minnows and three hours of gassing to an old school fishing mate that I haven't seen for over twenty years. :)

I fished a match at Barby Banks-Marshes(Rugby),with Spring St club,i drew a peg with poor form, and even fishing for the section of 10 was gonna be an uphill battle, with some much better pegs on the section...Anyway i fished a line at 2+3,with chop/caster/micros-Basically to catch anything,i managed 4 carp, some skimmers and roach, losing 3lumps as well, alternating between worm and maggot on the hook, for 16-6-0,which amazingly won my section(by default)as there was a 44lb,from one of the flyers...Gil Corns from Rugby Weighed 50lb,from the other section and there was a 33lb,and a 20lb from that section as well, weights dropped considerably after that, but everyone caught with the lowest weight being 4lb odd,20 fished,so good turnout for a club match, weather wise a great day, apart from the sun straight in my clock all day!!!Tunnel Barn Farm matches on tues and thurs this week...tight lines,Gaz

Almost forgot. The predator count was rather impressive. A cormorant, a little grebe, a goosander and three otters (probably just the one twice, once with its mate). None of them managed to put the fish off.

Full of fish - the Swale, hence the number of apex predators. Had a shoal of minnows arrive in the swim the other day, fed 6 pints of maggots and still couldn't feed them up. Can you imagine how big the perch and chub are going to get, snacking on them!!!

I was near the river lodden yesterday, watched the emergency services help rescue a woman and child being rescued by the emergency services after attempting to cross a ford that was rather swollen after heavy rain in her jag.

I was looking at those pics and initially I thought 'Beeley Wood Road', but it is a bit downstream of there I think. Near the old UCAR factory? The EA were clearing out that weir when I last visited. Have you tried the other weir upstream of there - abut 100 yds from the end of BW Rd?

You are right. Not so long since I used to get paid to walk dogs down that length :)

Yea, it's just before the road ends for the private car park.
It's my first angling visit to this area but will be venturing a little further up. Last minute decision so grabbed a tub of pellets , il go back armed with maggot and worm and see what I find

There is a good place at the next weir upstream. I've seen barbel to 6lb come out and luncheon meat was the usual bait.

One Chub yesterday about 2.5 lb. Caught on dairlylea slice.. First time I have tried it, bit soft so, I rolled it into a ball and put a bit of grass in the hook to hold it.
River very swollen.

Yes, delayed me by nearly 45 minutes - you'd think there were easier ways to plumb the depth - especially as the indicator was showing a touch over 3'............

Could't believe the turn out though - two fire engines, an emergency flood wagon c/w inflatable boats, two police cars, an Ambulance, an observer unit and a co-ordinating commander???..

. . .. of all the excuses I have heard why a bloke stayed in the pub an extra hour, this has to be one of the best . . . . . .

Fished Barston Lakes for the first time, chose a peg down the bottom (North) end of the lake as was expecting a nice Southerly wind and there was the option of deeper water. First time there and fully expected a blank tbh...

Place was gorgeous;

My new rod (Nash H-Gun Dward) was gorgeous. I'm verypleased with it.

The Bream were gorgeous (and also a new PB at 4lb 1oz)

What I believe to be a Crucian was gorgeous (and definitely a new PB at 3lb 9oz!)

Then there was this guy, that ate groundbait from my bowl and keep biting my feet. He was a bit of a knob tbh.

Good day all around!

Talk about no two days the same....

This morning I couldn't buy a roach bite on either tares or flake, which, after yesterday was quite amazing !
Persevered with hemp and caught a couple, but the bites were, as usual, like lightning so I decide to have a rethink about slowing the bites down, if possible. I rummaged around in the float tray and found a short bodied float of some 30 years vintage ( I bought it in Soth Korea in 1983!) which has a very long, thin, 2"+ antenna, about 1mm in diameter. I shotted it down to show only the antenna bit (a No 4 shot would've sunk it completely) with most shot being under the float. Two No 8's acted as droppers into 4' of water.

Great result as the bites became long and slow (mostly!) starting with a dip then a slow submerge so (almost) unmissable....TBH I did miss a number of 'dead certs' but generally speaking the setup proved just about perfect. The 'here one second, gone the next' type bite a thing of the past........................................maybe !!
Anyway, it was nice to see the float sink so, so slowly and I almost knew a fish would be on before I struck..

A good morning, with a follow up tomorrow, IF the heavy rain holds off...some chance eh ?

Another slightly extended afternoon on the river. The first swim is a bit of a banker, and it proved so again. Sixteen trout and six grayling (two over a pound) later and the swim died a death. Even upping the feed rate couldn't persuade them to have another go. Time for a move.

Headed several hundred yards upstream to what is a remarkably deep steady glide for this part of the river. I was a little surprised that I didn't get a response on the first run through. It certainly didn't give me the number of bites that the first swim did. Still managed a further four trout, three grayling, two dace and a bonus 4lb 2oz chub.

I spent a couple of hours this afternoon traipsing up and down the river in search of my illusive large perch.

Small jigs were used, and I only had one take all session, from a perch that stayed on for 10 seconds max; it was a least a foot long. Oh well, at least I know I'm getting the techique, lure and location right.

If I get out tomorrow I will be trotting maggots; trying to get a bit of practice in, so I don't show myself up too badly on Sunday.

Very enjoyable day today, trotting maggots.

Between Simon and I we caught dace, roach, chub, skimmer and perch.

I also managed a new, and extremely modest, pb perch of a pound.:p

Amazing how much fun you can have with half a pint of 3 week old, amonia soaked fizzy maggots.:)

I haven't botherd to post accounts of my recent fishing sessions as it's all a bit samey and to be honest I just couldn't be botherd...plus the batteries for the camera have conked out lol.
Anyhow...
I got to the river at 2pm yesterday afternoon so had a couple of hours decent daylight for some trotting... luckily before the rain arrived ! The river was up a foot or so on it's summer levels and was full of suspended particles so the visability wasn't to good. I had about 20+ chub but nothing of any size. The best part was hitting them at range and I reckon in one glide the float was a good 70yds downstream before it was pulled under by a hungry chub. Most of them did their usual annoying habit of diving for the bankside vegetation when hooked and the further downstream they where hooked the harder it was to stop them from wedging themselves in it as they could kite across the flow even when under quite severe pressure ! When one did (and quite a few did) manage to burrow into the bankside vegetation it was pointless pulling from upstream and I was forced walk down to the fish. It was possible to pull the fish straight out towards the opposite bank when stood over them although the net had to be used on several occassions to poke the bu88er out,...6ft drop down to the water in some spots didn't help ! lol.

A couple of pic's from the session....

Had a few hours on a local gravel pit, 10.30am – 2.30pm, in search of roach. Despite the strong wind, decided to use a light waggler set up in a small area giving some shelter. No monsters but over 30 fish, mainly between the half to one pound bracket with 8 over the pound to 1.8 on the nose..............
