Fished the top end of Lymm Dam yesterday. Lovely day if a bit windy and I've never seen so much crud (seeds I think) and all blowing my way. Quite a tow on the water as well which all made the waggler a bit challenging at about 20M. It's quite shallow at the top end of the Dam, 4ft on the day which if it's a bit windy makes life on the waggler a bit easier. Steady catch of Roach in great condition. Nothing huge the biggest being about 6oz but after recent outings I'd have been happy with a stickleback. It went quiet around 1pm when Mr Pike paid a visit but it didn't stick around and picked up again about 2. After that it was a bite a chuck. Anything from micro Roach to 6oz but mostly in the 2:4oz range. Wonderful day. Even had to get the sun tan lotion out in the afternoon:)

I didn't empty the Dam but had a dam (ho ho) good try:)

Which side did you fish ? the Baycliffe side or Church side ? the top end of the Baycliffe side near the Rhododendron bushes normally fishes well around this time of the year,

Church side last peg. There's a real tow on the Baycliffe side which makes waggler fishing hard work. I think it's the inflow on the opposite side swirling round.

It rained all day. Thank you ...the person who in vented brollies. I had a full winter clothing kit on. Some Spring:mad: Plenty of skimmers and perch to long rod/pin/pole float but no tench. Cold water is my excuse.

I didn't have rain all day as did John Step, but it was peeing down at 05.30 when I left home and still going strong when I arrived at my pit for the morning. I sat in the car listening to the steady beat of the wet stuff on the roof wondering if it would ease long enough for me to reach the swim and set up. Twenty minutes later I made the decision to just go for it but not before I had a proper 'minimal effect' plan in my head that would cut the time spent standing in the rain to a minimum.
Reaching the swim I dumped the gear under a large tree and best as I could covered it with the unhooking mat whilst I got the brolly up. I use an old outer section of an aluminium landing net handle (old enough to have a decent wall thickness so pretty stiff)and gives me a reasonable much raised shelter both for me and the gear. Not good in wind but it does give more freedom of movement for casting etc. for days such as yesterday.
Some 15mins later and I was sorted and ready to go, but more than a little miffed when the heavy rain turned to light drizzle before I had even finished applying the shot. It stayed this was for the next two hours!!

Enjoyed some decent fishing with all sorts of bait including tare fishing just 2' below the surface for roach. With almost all shot up under the float it was a spray of a few grains of hemp followed by the tare each cast and although a very busy way of fishing it was exciting stuff when fish up to 10/12ozs took the tare on the drop, which had the float scooting across the surface before disappearing! Once or twice fish even left the water! I have to say I missed fish aplenty and it is hard work, so once the bites more or less ceased I went onto the punch or reds for yet more fish, although somewhat smaller....

No sign of the crucians of Thursday despite using plenty of liquid bread and similar tactics, so I may need to consider those two fish as a flash in the pan and banish them from my thoughts and then be surprised should they turn up again, or bigger brothers!!

All in all another great mornings fishing so the cleaning of gear and drying of same not too much of a chore.................

Out again on Tuesday.........................rain or no!!!

ps Fishing tares in this manner makes a total mess of the hook length which needs to be without kinks so I went through three changes over the morning - not my favourite job with wet fingers!

Back again at this venue today for an open match. I drew a bit further along from the blue boat where I caught the chub last week.

image.jpeg

Fished 3 pole lines, one short with punch, a maggot rig and a worm rig for down the middle over groundbait.

A very gusty and cold NE wind made it tricky and uncomfortable but contrary to my predictions the roach showed in good numbers.
A few skimmers and gudgeon also put in an appearance although at the end I was only 4th in my section of 9 with 4:8.

11lb won the section, all roach on punch on short whip from the next peg to me. Sometimes simple is the operative word.

17lb won overall from the lower section, 5 bream caught on the waggler with corn and maggot cocktail over GB. Not a bait choice I would have made but who knows?

18 fished, a few from Essex and one who drove down from Lancashire.

Yesterday morning I went for a 3 hour session, Float fishing right next to some lilly pads and I managed to get some lovely small Tench.

Nice things come in small packages! Lovely little tench! Even at that size they would be a pleasure to catch!:)

I managed to get out both days this weekend, yesterday my heart wasn’t really in but I just needed to get out following the events of recent days and the preceding couple of months and I unwisely picked a rock hard water to do a spot of perching on which resulted in a biteless blank and an early finish.

Every cloud has a silver lining though and the early finish allowed me the time to recce the group of small waters which I had intended to join at the turn of the year but which were in the process of changing hands.

The upshot of it was that the new owners are allowing day tickets at a fiver a go and so I decided this morning that I was going to have a punt.

Not much to go on in the way of bait without resorting to pellet but a pint of krilled dead reds from the freezer and half a bag of Sensas Lake meant it was at least possible and probably a good approach for sussing out what was in there.

Out of the four lakes I picked the one known as Railway, due to the fact that it sits at the bottom of an embankment where the lines were taken up decades ago and beyond my living memory.

I began fishing an hour or two into the afternoon after whipping a size 22 barbless spade end onto a pound and a half bottom below a small homemade waggler, along with the light float rod and ‘pin.

Apologies for the freshly mixed groundbait look to the hands…

td1.JPG

Dirty urchin!

Anyway, this was to be fished a couple of rod lengths out beside a patch of lillies in around three feet of water...

td2.JPG

A small nugget of groundbait containing a pinch of dead reds went in and as I suspected I was soon into small roach, lots of ‘em in fact and I wondered if they would ever get moved on by the bigger stuff but they did.

Small, swinger skimmers turned up after an hour or so and these in turn were replaced with something that felt very solid by comparison and which turned out to be my first Tench of the year…

td3.JPG

Quite happy with that on the light gear around the lillies.

Things improved further though, with decent sized skimmers moving in and with the seasonal display of tubercles they didn’t even feel too slimy lol.

Lovely dark colour given their size…

td4.JPG

I had a good dozen of those to go with the scores of small roach, twenty or so swinger skimmers and even a Gudgeon put in a very welcome appearance!

I managed to lose what appeared to be a mirror carp of around 7lbs after the tiny hook just couldn’t hold on right at the net and in turn dumping me in an overhanging tree but without doubt the fish that most caught my attention was this one and noticeably larger than the handful of others which I had taken during the afternoon…

td6.jpg

Happy with that given the limited approach due to bait options, I’ve only tried one out of the four lakes but suffice to say that I have finally ended my quest for a local stillwater and one that is for all intents and purposes in a quiet countryside setting and just two minutes drive from home so it will be ideal for a few hours after work.

There is something else which I’m extremely excited about but that’s a story for another day, pending results, but let's just say for now that it’s untapped and full of potential with regards to our stripey friends.

I shall be buying a year book… :w

Well the forecast on BBC looked very promising, but my chosen venue clearly had its own little micro-climate complete with very chilly Easterly gusts & the occasional drizzly shower - suffice to say I was mighty glad that I decided to retrieve my winter jacket from its 'summer vacation' :eek:mg:. Lovely looking place all the same but the overnight drop in temperature had the anticipated effect :(

Fishing mostly single caster on the waggler I managed a few small roach, 1 small perch & 3 barbel all around the 3/4lb mark. In truth I'm not really a fan of barbel or chub in still waters, but given just how dismal a day this would have been without the little blighters, I might have to rethink that!

Only third time out, and second match, this year; fished club's annual charity match, moved this year to New Farm fishery near Maidenhead. North East wind made it feel like mid-winter and it fished like it as well.
Drew peg 11 which I would have fancied more in summer and not much even then, facing open water across a bay and with no "island chuck." Said before the off that might be in trouble if couldn't catch down the edge where I had a little bit of cover both sides and wasn't sure that the margins would fish given the conditions. Anyway, set up two topkits on white hydro for out, 4x12 and 4x16 rigs both with 18 to 0.09 and black hydro and .2 clear dibber 18 to 0.11 for the edge where was happy to find just over 2 ft depth, Started on maggot at 5m and after 30 seconds without a bite joked with Brian S across the bay that it was the slowest start I'd ever had here...And it didn't speed up either. Half an hour gone and only three tiny rudd so had a look at 11m. No better. Was feeding inside lines to either side about half a metre out, a good bit heavier to left where better cover, came over it and had a run of rudd but still only ounce fish at best. Back out at 5m, pot of chop and dead reds this time and the elastic finally had to work, nice ide about 8oz, then just little roach and rudd again. And that was the story for the rest of the match, alternating between down the side (where only the side that I fed heavier did any good) and 5m with worm or red maggot. Picked up the odd better fish (3 ide, 2 crucians, a pound skimmer, two tenchettes and a few decent roach) but never more than one on each line before had to switch again Still getting little rudd off and on so at least putting fish in the net fairly steadily but they were no size at all. A couple of walkers told me that it was a struggle all round but still didn't think I'd done any good at full time although knew had beaten either side of me quite easily.
Scales got to me and weighed 11-13 which was a bit more than I thought and unexpectedly a section win and third overall, beaten by Ian with 16 lb on the "Rope swim" peg 3 and Matt with 12-0 next to him.

Most important part of the day though was the charity; back to the Dolphin for the usual excellent buffet (thanks as always to Noel and Bridie) and , including the monies raised by our specimen group's separate fish ins on Denham Lake, handed over a cheque for £4,007 to Shooting Star Childrens Hospice. Well done to all.

Was it a qualifier for something Peter ? seeing as you had a Lancs lad fishing
