I went to a local pool, initially to put notices around it about inconsiderate dog owners using the place as a sh!t stop and not cleaning up after them, The notices were blunt and to the point, and looking at the mess left some of these dogs must be like Shetland ponies.I did not mention the notices were from the club, I did hand written ones on sheets of A4 in marker pen, they were done as if by a member of the public, Anyway... I was going to grab my rod etc from the car and have a couple of hours fishing when I noticed a couple of Kingfishers darting about the pool,so with all thoughts of fishing gone, I stayed and watched them for about an hour, I have not seen any on there for a few years, They used to land on the end of your rod or pole at one time before taking off again, A brilliant sight on a lovely day.

Another early start on the river saw me targeting barbel. I was fishing a normally prolific section of river that's lightly fished, the barbel aren't big they average around 5lb and peak at around 7lb. I was fishing alot heavier than normal with the hot weather, 7lb straight through to a size 8, I was fishing a running groundbait feeder stopped with a couple of float stops. The bait was meat and corn with a homemade groundbait I've been playing around with.

I was fishing around a third of the way across the river at the base of a steep drop off in around 6' of water.

I got off to a good start with a couple of quick bites from chub. A brief lull in the action saw the barbel move in and I caught two small barbel both peas in a pod.

The swim died so I introduced a few balls of groundbait and rested the swim for 20 minutes or so. As soon as I cast out I was getting liners and a bite quickly followed. Problem was it was a bream and they're normally the kiss of death on this river and sure enough I blanked for the next 90 minutes so I called it a day and packed up.

Managed a couple of nice dace last night trotting a small piece of meat with no feed. Then i hooked an eel which bit me off, not for the first time this season, bringing the session to an end. I really don't want to catch eels, so i'll need to rethink what baits i'm using. Mind you, the other day a lad caught one on corn. There are so many this year, i've seen them in all of my swims.

One of my favoured venues yesterday for the codgers match where 9 of us did battle in the searing heat.... Fortunately the sun moved behind the trees shortly after the pic below was taken early on.

A shallow pound which gets quite weedy during the summer, the boats chop it up and it floats to and fro, making delicate rigs tricky to use. Under cooler conditions this is a roach and dace water but they were conspicuous by their absence? Gudgeon, skimmers and perch took their place and maggot or pinkie was the bait.
Saying that, the winner had a net of skimmers and a few small roach all on punch for 7lb:10oz on his narrower end peg.

Runners up had 4:10 and 4:1:8 respectively ...
I struggled again and came nowhere, roll on Autumn.

Found a dead one washed up on the beach yesterday.

Last weekend I was struggling with a touch of sciatica so Monday's session had to be a comfortable sitting down job. I left home at 6.30 in bright sunshine heading for Todber Manor Farm. Top side of Blandford the mist came in and didn't lift while 10 o'clock. I got myself nicely snuggled down on this peg and put the method feeder up.

Todber Manor is a very picturesque and well run fishery but it is a Commercial and so pretty predictable. The lake I fished is predominantly carp and trench. During the four hours I fished I had 37 carp to 7lb (most being between 2lb and 4lb) and 4 tench biggest 3lb 12oz. All taken on lassoed pellet. I took no photos, because when you've seen one carp you're seen them all, plus taking photos on your own of fish in the net, you finish up with basically the same shot each time. So you will have to take my word for it and my word is iron. What did interest me was the guy on the next peg. He fished cubes of bread on a hugh controller thing. I never seen that done before. I had a craic with him and he certainty knew what he was doing. He didn't get many fish but what he did have were all double figure. Pete.

After Monday's session at Todber I was fit enough to tackle the Stour today. I fished this peg:View attachment 5265
I stood down in the water which is how I like to fish and trotted a stick float in six foot of water, I say trotted which is over stating it. Four yards in five minutes is hardly "trotting" for me. This river badly needs water through it. Caught all my fish directly in front of me. Little dace, roach and chublets

I finished up with 73 fish, all swingers, no need for the net. What I call "proper fishing" and I love it. Pete. The peg was on the horizontal don't know why its copied like that.

Up even earlier this morning due to the stifling heat, arriving at the reservoir around 0520 it was 17.5C with lots of small fish topping and a kingfisher zooming about trying to find a suitable perch from which to acquire its breakfast.Out with two method feeder rods, cast short, cast long, baits changed - eventually had a proper bite and it was another bream about 4lb-ish.Two burst of heavy raindrops so up with the brolly which then acted as a sunshade as the clouds dispersed.Sat watching a great white egret chasing a smaller egret about,I think the wildlife has had enough of this relentless heat and humidity as well as me.By about 10.30 all activity stopped so into the baking hot car to go home.

Finally back on line, no thanks to BT....
Only been out three times since my last post as my week per month back in London morphed into nearly two, client having a bit of a crisis...(Could have fished club match on our lake at Wraysbury on the Sunday, glad I didn't as one tench won it. Quite easily.)

Back to Rubha Huinish looking for pollack- had five from 1-8 to around 4lb, all on lures. They do seem to like those little rubber roach that Savage Gear do. Nothing at all on the second rod with prawn or lugworm about 50 yards out, clean ground so thought there might be at least a dab or two about but no. Great day for wildlife though, had at least four dolphins back and forwards along the edge of the tide rip 100 yards away and had a family of seals in the area all day. Didn't see any otters but obviously a few around as little groups of crab and sea urchin shells everywhere just above the high tide line.
Still nice and dry for the climb up and down the cliff as well.

Had another evening from the rocks on Loch Portree about a mile from home . At least saved my blank with a baby cod this time and added a couple of whiting about the same size. Looks like could be a non starter in terms of better fish but still a lovely place to sit in the evening, especially with a sea eagle for company (or at any rate following a fishing boat in across the loch from me.) Might give it a go on a rising evening tide over the very shallow weedy and muddy area (big lugworm bed) just to the South of the town, which does look the part. Don't think there's any bass this far north but should be good for flounders at least.

And another day at the top of the island, Rubh an't Sailleir this time. Not as far a walk in as Rubha Huinish, only a mile or so, but no path and after the first few hundred yards a lot of long heather and bracken which is a right pain to cross, especially on a warm windless day with the midges active. Anyway, some deep rocky gullies as well as the tide run along the headland, and ended up with what is looking like a par for the course day with four pollack, all around 2-8 to 3 on lures and two wrasse on mussel down the edge.

Seems to be a strange lack of mackerel, had none at all anywhere chucking feathers about and need some to stock up with bait for later in the year. Thought it might be just me in the wrong places, but talked to two serious sea anglers on hols here from Glasgow who were struggling find any either. Got a lot of good tips for marks from them as they've been coming here for years. Trying one early next week where its apparently spurdog and thornbacks on only a 40 or 50 yard chuck. Another two mile plus walk in....

Certainly is (although you might get a different answer in winter).
Only real downside I can see so far is the eye watering price of a pint.

True. Will miss fisherman's Wednesday night out in the Dolphin though. Although sure will replace it somehow up here even at £4.50 a pint !

I live close to the Slough Arm, always fancied having a dabble along there, is it club controlled?

Gerrards Cross &Uxbridge DAS. Members only on the stretch opposite the houseboats at Langley (from the bridge by Langley station down to Mansion Lane.) Rest of canal is day ticket on the bank , at present you would be unlucky to be charged; not sure I should have said that, I'm a member !
