Cracking Chub Rob! Was the clicker at 50 correct for the total fish Neil?

Had a bad plumbing problem this week and the waste trap under the bath in the family bathroom come off and it's entire contents came through the ceiling and wall into the study!!! Puts blanking into perspective ! I had better not digress any further or I will incur the wrath of PC!! So HDYGO today?

The lake at 8.00am

View attachment 5673

And later when the sun shone the first fish of the day had been caught and all was well with the world!

View attachment 5674

View attachment 5675

I had 2 carp around 6lb and 5 of these!

View attachment 5676

This was the biggest at a shade over 6.5lb!! I am now feeling chilled notwithstanding my view of the stained ceiling and walls of the study! C'est la vie!

With the game season nearly over, and finally a bit of water in the river,I popped down to have a go for a Salmon. Not much happening, then finally a nice klonk on the line, which resulted in this one, about 6 or 7ib. Not the freshest, but I'll take what i can get!
Put in a good few hours for them this season, and this is the first.
Looking forward to getting back on the Chub and Grayling this autumn.

I've spent the last 2 days here on the GUC near Hemel trying to catch a big perch and practicing for next Tuesday's codgers bash.
Caught rakes of perch on maggot along with nice roach, skimmers and ruff.
Unfortunately none of the perch were bigger than 6oz...

Like PC in the previous post, today I tried for a big perch. I had 4 but at between 1 to 1.5lb they won't be gracing the Big Perch Challenge Thread.

I used prawns. Just as a side note. I could not get a bite with the prawn on the hook. I switched to a Korum hair thingy ( little spike and needle job name escapes me) and bingo. A pull round straight away followed by the next 3.

PS. If thats the platform in your photo you managed to lose tackle through Mike I admire your aim.:wh

I mentioned earlier in the week that I fancied a days grayling fishing on South Yorkshire's river Don.
So today with minimum gear I found myself in Sheffield with an angling aquintence who I'd shared a day on the venue last year.
We headed towards the top end of the reach where there's some faster, interesting water, and, thirty yards apart it wasn't long before our trotted maggots were being taken with abandon by Trout, Dace, the odd minnow and some lovely Chunky Grayling that tho not as acrobatic as Trout took much more advantage of the long streamer weed that thankfully makes the river such a more interesting venue than ever it looked back in the days when it was grossly polluted.
It was sunny and warm after a chilly start from from home and it seemed that it encouraged the fish to move onto the free offerings, so much so it was easy to see them flashing right at the rod tip-- exciting stuff!
Between us we had several grayling that must have been on the lb mark , fish that a couple of years ago would have been exceptional but things move on I suppose, better food supply brings better growth rates and who would argue with that ?
An hour in and my float glides away like before and the strike meets with a more solid resistance, a fish that seems heavier and stronger than the better ones a little earlier.
It was, and what a fish, one that had me working hard to avoid it slipping the size eighteen barbless hook.It finally came to hand (did I really do that?) after what seemed an age but I suppose two minutes max was more the reality .
On the bank I marked its length against my rod butt - 16•5", a very kwik photo by my friend and away it went in the now gin clear water beneath the streamer weed.
A truly exceptional river Don Grayling, I was really chuffed with it, as for its weight, maybe around a pound and a half but I'm not claiming any weight on this one, it's length and healthy girth was enough on this occasion.
I carried on afterwards and ended with around thirty five fish in total.
Standing in the same spot forty odd years ago my wellies would have dissolved!!

I've had a really bad case of CBA this week. After keeping tabs on the weather forecasts, I've intended to go a few times. Unfortunately, forecast light winds have invariably been a fair bit stronger on the day. Today there really were light winds. As I'm definitely not getting out tomorrow, and probably won't on Sunday, I thought I'd best go.

I'm not sure that five parr, two grayling and one brownie was really worth the effort, but it was a lovely day. Serves me right for going well up river to a spot I've not fished for about a year. I was trying to find out whether the dace had started to migrate downstream. Perhaps I got the answer.

Todays outing should have been to Madisons on Moss Farm at Irlam, but a last minute change of plan saw us go to Gordon and Mikes 2nd home , Dunham Fisheries, After getting up at daft o clock to cube a few tins of meat, then wait for tackle shop to open. None at Dunham but Moss Farm has one, that's why had to wait for local shop to open, A couple of pints of maggots bought and I was ready to go. Bait for today was to be Maggots, Meat and Cornand 2mm pellets for me, and Maggots, meat and pellets for Graham my fishing mate. Ariving at Dunham ,we decided on permanent pegs 11 and 12 on Copper Beach, After paying our money to the lovely Karen we set up a feeder rod each and a pole. I put a margin rig on one topkit to fish 12" deep at 13 metres to the far side rushes, a 4x14 float with a size 16 B911 hook on 0.14 straight through to fish down the central track. and a 4x12 float with a size 20 Guru QM1 hook on 0.14 to 0.12 line, elastics were 15h for the margin rig, solid 10 for down the track and double number 6 to fish 2' deep. The feeder set up was a 20gram pellet feeder with a 4" hooklength and a 16 hook with a quickstop attached. The line was 5lb sensor on a Shimano 4000 Dl baitrunner on a Silstar diaflex 7'6" bomb rod. Right ,enough of the boring tackle talk, I potted in 250ml of 8mm cubed meat flavoured with an F1 liquid flavour, against the rushes on the far side, the same of corn down the track, and cattyed a few maggots in both swims. As I gave these time to settle ,I threw a couple of pinches of soaked 2mm micros into my left margin. So on with a single red maggot and started off a 6 metres on the 4x12 set up,fishing 2' deep. Lower the rig in, watch the float settle and go under, A roach, first fish of the day, I saw a few carp swimming just below the surface, so I kept ping a few maggots at the float but all I was catching were roach. Graham had started on the feeder fishing an 8mm banded pellet, casting into a gap in the rushes on the far side, and had caught a few carp of around 1 to 2 pound, I had a few roach around 1 to 2 ounces !!! So the shallow rig was removed and the margin rig went on, Baited up with a piece of meat, a few in pole mounted cup, and over to the far side, dropped the few cubes from the cup into the swim and lowered the baited rig in. After lifting and dropping the bait to attract the residents of the far side, the float dips and I come back with a piece of weed on the hook. there were snags all along that part. So it was down the track with the 4x14 set up and sweetcorn. More roach, and more carp for Graham on the feeder.I put the topkits on the pole roost and filled the pellet feeder with micros and meat on the quickstop and cast in to my left, Nothing happening there either, Meat and corn were not working, Graham had tried meat and had no luck so stayed with pellets. I had kept throwing a few pinches of 2mm micros in my left margin and noticed a couple of swirls, So on with the 4x12 and baited up with a single maggot, I threw about half a dozen maggots in and put the baited rig among them. The float buries and an Ide of around 1lb is netted, this went on for a while with the ide staying around the same size with the odd larger specimen thrown in along with a few skimmers, It was a case of a pinch of micros and half a dozen maggots every other fish. The float dips again and at first I thought I had hooked a small bit of brownish weed, It tured out to be a gudgeon of around an inch and half long,it looked anorexic. I up the feed of micros and maggots and before long a few F1's showed up. Graham tried his pole line but no luck so he stayed with the feeder and had a few more carp of around 2 to 3 pound. My margin swim got stronger and a few decent carp of around 5lb made an appearance , which was fun playing them on double 6 elastic. I think if I had fished heavier elastic I would have pulled out of a few, there were no snags to my left so I let them swim to open water and played them out from there, By this time Graham had decided to fish his margin using same method and bait as me, but with 12 to 14 elastic, he had a few carp but with the heavier set up and a shallow swim they were creating a commotion on the surface because they struggled to swim out of the margin. My lighter set up allowed them to swim out and I managed to net them with not to much fuss. I ended up feeding a pint of 2mm micros and a pint of red maggots in my margin swim, Graham had 15 carp and a few roach, I had around 10 or 11 Ide , 9 carp and a few roach and skimmers and the anorexic gudgeon, I reckoned we had caught around 40lb- 50lb each, All mine caught on maggot and Grahams on pellet and maggot. We had to wait a while for the fish to settle after a couple had been plundered from the margins,it was not one a chuck. The meat and corn went in the freezer when I got home. I felt like scrooge opening the tins of meat and corn and not catching on them, So next time we go there it will be a couple of pints of micros and a couple of pints of maggots and that is it, But the Law of Sod will more than likely prove that meat and corn would have been a better choice. Until next time :D

On a club lake just as it was getting light, didn't want to be there so early but wanted to miss the rush hour traffic (rush hour everything at a standstill) it was a wooly hat and cold nose morning but the weather forecast was spot on with the wind direction so into a sunny spot with the wind on my back.

Fished hemp and tares to my left while feeding corn to the right of the swim, bites on tares were slow but eventually improved in their regularity, none of the Quality Roach that are in the lake, fish 6/8" (they are the slimiest roach I have ever caught) kept a bit of corn going into the right side and when the tare line dried up I tried there, skimmers of about a pound on the corn, finished with about 20 fish in all.

I got to the river just before first light this morning for a couple of hours lure fishing for zander. I normally end up hedging my bets and fishing lures on the smaller side hoping for perch as well as zander but today I almost stuck to my plan. I managed three zander in the first hour and then the wind picked up and made it difficult to keep in contact with the jig head so I packed away, well almost, I left my hooking mat behind:mad:

I left the river for a more sheltered section and fished for perch, only had a single bite but the move was worth it, best perch of the year

Have been stuck with fishing the 1/2 acre home pool for the last couple of weeks. I own a Shakespeare Sigma specimen 10 ft rod which I am rather fond of as it has a nice progressive (if that is the word I want) action. It comes with a "screw in" tip ring. On a whim I dug out a thirty year old swing tip and screwed it in. Instead of a bomb I slid on a small flat bed method feeder. Loading it with an oats and corn mix wetted with 50ml of Robin Red liquid in half a sweet corn can of water and baiting with two grains of corn saw some positive bites really straightening out the swing tip and hanging on! One of which resulted in this:

Old Otith Mollah with Catla.

a Catla of a little over eight pounds which put up quite a scrap on the little rod and in the 40x50 yd pool.

All the best

Nice fish. I like those Sigma Specialist rods. Beautiful through action. I have two which can be used for a number of applications. Being 1.5 lb test curve they can be used for light carp, chub, zander and much more.

John a few of the pegs are adapted for the disabled with a ridge all round to presumably provent a wheelchair( Not that I have ever seen one or know of any member who uses one) from falling off the edge! It was the slats on the horizontal platform that my bits found!!!

With a few hours to spare between family duties and watching my team at 5-30 this evening I grabbed the whip, a bag and a few bits and headed for the estate.

As is the norm I had it to myself and there was a definite Autumnal feeling with a cooler air than just two days ago but still a beautiful day, with the river beckoning this may well be the last sight of this majestic oasis in the garden of Kent til next year.

1QzHErP.jpg

The fish were feeding from the off and over the next two hours I caught steadily, sadly they were mainly skimmers who I won’t miss over winter but I did manage a few small roach and a solitary crucian.

oG5cJWE.jpg

This Summer was a disappointment compared to last year, the lake suffered badly with the intensely hot period, infact the algae is still present today. I think I may have caught more of the newly stocked crucians than I did tench. I could have gone to many of the commercials not far and caught a lot more fish, would I swap it for this? no way, such a privilege to have a ticket here.

Another sure sign that we are leaving Summer behind are the lengthening shadows quite early in the afternoon sun.

Back home in time to watch a cracking game of football between the blues and the reds.

I've been up the wall with my back for the last few days and against my better judgment I went trotting today. The walk of around a mile to my swim was a painfull one to say the least. The river was quite low and clear and was noticeably cooler than my last ledger session of a couple of weeks back, it felt bloody freezin!
! Because of the back pain I decided just to fish the one swim and I only lasted about 40 min's before wrapping up. The fact that all I caught was small to micro chub and the odd minnow didn't exactly inspire me to keep fishing any longer lol.
I finished up collecting stones for my soon to be filled fishtank which meant I was walking round in the shallow water bent over looking for nice stones . As you can imagine this did my back the power of good and after humping my 25lb or more haul of stones back to the car :stupid: I just irritated my back ten fold :eek:mg: and i'm now paying the price for my stupidity!

Tigger some seatboxes weigh 25lb or more, so you got off pretty "Lightly" :eek:mg:

Tell me about it, I had a Milo Tardist for a short spell and it was like carrying a small car on me back!
I bought two for a seriously good price on ebay, one for myself and one for me pal. I can remember speaking to the seller and he asked me if I wanted trollies for them....I said narrh i'll just carry it over me shoulder....I heard him giģgle to himself as I said it and I soon realised why .

I fancied a day after the barbel on a stretch of the Ouse and as tigger says it felt bloody freezing, especially as as I was in the shade for most of the day,on top of that I did my usual trick of not carrying my bib and brace, goretex army boots and winter fleece until I have a day shivering,I think it's trying to convince myself winter isn't coming, anyway I am now going to stay clear of the river as it is clearing fast and needs a good flush to activate the quality fish, this is after catching one four ounce chub for my efforts...
