Yesterday lunchtime I nipped down to the town to try feeder fishing on the pit, the speedboat and skiers were out too so I kept clear.

image.jpg

Mixed up some Sensas 3000 groundbait ,which is very sweet smelling and full of particles, to which I added half a bag of brown crumb to make it break up more readily.
20gr cage feeder with a Drennan Carbon feeder hook size 16 to 0:13. Carbonactive 12'6" tip rod with 2oz tip. Casting out to start I found thick weed, horrible stuff, all stringy. After a while I felt I'd hit a weedless patch 40yds out so I clipped up.
Expecting to catch tench or the small carp which seem to have arrived mysteriously in the pit I baited the hook with ......

image.jpg

. Cast out and put the rod on the rest, almost immediately the tip went round, a tussle ensued before the culprit, a big slab was netted.

image.jpg

During the next 3hours I caught 6 more before they petered out. All of them absolutely pristine specimens from 4 to 6lb.

image.jpg

This pit 5 years ago was barren except for some big carp, unbelievable how it's suddenly full of silverfish now, happy days.

Today I went off to Shillingford, Oxon to fish an interclub match on the Thames. Coloured but very little flow I set up a slider, casting out halfway into 11' of water, single red maggot on a 20.
I was beset by tangles and snags but soldiered on catching roach to 6oz. Only 5 hours long today and of that I probably fished 4 due to the above.

image.jpg

image.jpg

Ended up with 3lb:11oz:8dr which put me 7th out of 25. My club (Tring anglers) beat the home team (Wycombe Thames) by 10lbs on overall weight.

I tried another pit yesterday based on the proverb 'a change is as good as a rest' and what a load of rubbish it turned out to be. Well, not rubbish exactly but it could have been so much better, if only................................................

True to form, I was passing over Marlow Bridge at around 06.15 and the sight that met my eyes was amazing as just enough light in the sky turned the water upstream of the weir into what looked like a smooth sheet of gold. This, along with the very heavy mist rising up below it , gave it an almost eerie feel, and had a naked women risen up and danced along the weir cill I would not have been surprised. As it was nothing of the sort appeared...........

Unsurprisingly, i found the pit devoid of fisherman so I had a choice of swims, but I still found myself dumping the gear and wandering up and down trying to make a decision. Sometimes I think it easier to find some swims occupied as this forces a decision....
In the end I plumbed for one that give lasting shade over the swim as the morning wore on, but also offering the chance of giving me a little warmth once the sun was higher in the sky. This would not the case for an hour or two and I knew I would suffer a mighty chilly spell until it happened. I don't mind cold mornings but it is still a shock to the system and I was pleased I had called the thermal gear into action when choosing wearing apparel the evening before, and this included the heavy gloves which I kept on as I set up the chair and moved everything into position.
At 2 degrees, it was still damned cold though, and I really felt my 75 years for a time!

On the particular water and at this time of year I'm still partial to hemp fishing (with punch as a backup) and although I gave thought to buying a pint of reds, I decided he seed would give me the best chance of fish without intrusion from pesky carp and equally annoying small perch. I mentioned gloves; What a boon they turned out to be as I went through the process of fixing No 8 shot with reasonably warm fingers!

Having got the hot tea out of the way, I settled down and made my first cast which is a bit of a misnomer as it was more the 'laying' of the float onto the surface in a straight line, allowing the seed to drop slowly through 5' water to end up some 6" off the bottom, but all the time tight to the just sunken rod tip. Several casts produced the odd dip of the float but nothing worth striking so I increased the loose feed and this (pure assumption on my part but possibly correct) induced the roach into activity as the next cast had a fish almost self hooking itself before the bait reached bottom, causing the rod tip to stab round. A nice 8" fish...
(I have done this 'tight line' fishing many times in the past when using hemp (even one or two rod lengths out) spraying hemp on the surface and casting into it. I've mentioned this before and it can produce very good fish in among the smaller samples. Casting in a straight line and tightening to the float is the way to go, imo, and almost has the fish in a frenzy at times....)

Anyway, I pushed on while the going was good and managed a further 10 fish before (and why does it happen with such monotonous regularity?) the fish stopped feeding to all intense and purposes, not only deep, but at all levels! Every fish hooked had been drawn from the swim, none had been lost and the feed went in at a trickle (as all the good books tell you) yet still they went AWOL. I couldn't be disappointed but the catch was turning into a very good one and it is frustration more than anything....

From that point forward it was a case of searching for fish and I did find some up in the water for a time, but they too thought 'too much of a good thing' etc. etc. and stopped feeding almost as soon as they had started. In the end I made up some liccy bread and fished the punch for any number of fish, but all were small and had little trouble in sinking the 3" long pigeon feather float. On occasion, the float, under the rod top, was almost out of sight before I'd gathered my wits and struck!!

Lovely morning and great to be out. Plenty of bird song with one or two long tailed tits to keep me company....

Out again Tuesday, all being well..

Entertaining post Tony!:)

I know what you mean about an empty lake and having the pick of the pegs! I never know which to pick and often waste half an hour umming and arrhing over trying one i have'nt fished before or the tried and trusted. I often think of those other anglers not there and what they might know that i dont!

I plan a roach session later in the week!

Finally got out today for the first time in at least 3 months, spent a few hours lure fishing on a club lake.
On arrival found that the lake was at least 3ft down on last years level and all my normal swims were dried out or too shallow to fish. Just goes to show how much rain we need this winter in some parts of Essex.
Nothing to report fish wise just good to be out again. Unfortunately can’t see me being able to get out again for a week or two. Hopefully it wont be another 3 months wait

Once over the shock of the car windscreen being frozen,it was off to the reservoir to do a bit of spinning for pike and perch.Cold in the NW breeze and absolutely nothing moving on that windward side.Moved round to the sunnier side to defrost and still caught nothing, not even a half hearted take.
Still watching two buzzards and a kingfisher made it worthwhile to be out and about.

Is it a waste of time trying to find the best swim!
Had a mile of beach to choose from yesterday, same beach I tried last week but this time got there at low tide to scan it. Last time I just chucked in where I was and caught a couple of fish but at low tide that spot looked fairly featureless. So I trudged for a long way and found a flat rocky bit and some gulleys (the second picture) and fished there. Not a bite, meantime an angler set up where I would have fished and on my way home I stopped and asked if had anything and he had had a nice bass, my bass!
To be fair I couldn't get any lug-worm and had to use squid, bit like sweetcorn squid, works or doesn't and it didn't. Still learned a bit about the beach, best to leave it at low tide, to shallow, best to wait for the tide to hit the stones which is when the other angler caught his bass.
Nippy north wind but loads of Oyster Catchers about and a pair of Redshanks working the tide-line. All in all a nice day away from the maddening crowd and I know where I am going to fish next time, follow my harris not my brain although I am not sure which is which however, after years of experience I now know that's the best way to choose a swim.
Beats the M25, I do feel sorry for some of you sometimes, honest:)

2 hour drive for 1.5h session but cannot complain, nothing beats evening at rivwrside with rod and reel.

Caught couple of baby Perch and one baby Jack, not too shabby for a short session without specific plan.

PhotoGrid_1538469176487.jpg

I was very lucky with the Jack though as he took lure on 6lb mono, was hooked at the corner of his mouth, could not bite all the way down because of the jighead.

Back here again yesterday for the old codgers match. With a change in the wind direction to NW, there was a chill in the air.
I really struggled for bites, as did others in my section, in what was a good area last week?
Meanwhile up in the top of the pound, where the wind didn’t hit the water the weights were much better.
Top weight was 7lb+ from top end peg, I scraped just 11oz and came last out of 10....:(

On another planet
Bit of a surreal morning on a misty canal near home, the last time I fished there was in early summer despite it being walking distance, I think it was the fact that previously I was fishing there when I got the call to say that my mum was dying so hadn't been there since, hows that for a cheery intro? Plenty of water under the canal bridge since then so the plan was to get a big perch from my secret perch swim.

Things weren't looking good or rather smelling good on arrival as the place stunk of diesel which was on the surface, despite this the usual small chub were still topping. Perch were nowhere to be seen nor did I have a single roach which would be weird were it not for the obvious assumption that their taste buds are less keen on the bitter smell of boat fuel, this must have been coating my maggots as they dropped through the surface film. Chub and gudgeon on the other hand would appear less discerning and they were the only fish feeding.

After giving up on 'Secret perch swim' after one tiny gudgeon too many I decided to go to 'Not so secret chub swim' where it was too easy, six chub in six casts before mad bird lady decided to dump half a loaf of wholemeal in the swim from her garden. Playing chub underneath swans is always an experience and these canal chub always surprise me by the scrap they put up despite being in the 2-3lb bracket. A few more chub made for about 20lb of fish in half an hour which wasn't bad going and I was home before midday.

Wetthrough( Gordon) and yours truly met up at Dunham Fishery today for what turned out to be a very enjoyable day! I arrived at about 7.30 to find Gordon already fishing and I suspect having already caught a few! With his right foot still in a surgical boot, his chauffeur had dropped him off very early!

Gordon was on the float and I did my best to alternate a float and feeder rod using an eclectic assortment of baits as is my won't! I had prepared some curried chick peas and 5 carp succumbed during the day! I had a few skimmers and umpteen small roach on maggot! Gordon caught a more varied selection including several crucians and rudd! I don't know if his counter went beyond 100!!

The weather was fine and improved as the day progressed ! Thanks Gordon for an enjoyable day despite conversations being conducted across the water! Dunham is a picturesque and productive Fishery and well worth a visit if you are ever in these parts!

Stuck on the chuffin M25 somewhere between Heathro
First time out for me for weeks today. The side effects of the various meds I'm on have knocked me flat and my specialist ( bless her) gave me a week off. So no pills for the last week and I do feel better for it.....well enough to try a few hours fishing with the BF. Mrs S approved provided Phil was with me.

We went to a place I've not fished before. I wanted something fairly gentle and not requiring too much thought and this place was ideal. Float and pin down the edge feeding pellet and maggot and fishing maggot, pellet and meat over the top. Place is full of fish and I had a very pleasant afternoon catching little carp, rudd, perch and barbel. Nothing of any great size....I guess my biggest carp would have been about 4lb and the biigest barbel of the 12-15 that i had wasnt more than about 2.5lb.....but every one was absolutely mint. I probably had around 2 dozen carp and countless rudd. The carp typically would have anything but the barbel would only have maggot....I ended up fishing 4-5 on a 14 simply to try and deter the rudd a bit.

The BF put me on a known spot that I would have walked past without a glance while he dropped in next door in a swim that screamed fish. I bagged up fishing a foot off a nondescript clump of reeds while he struggled most of the day. He did find a few fish later on but mostly carp with only 3-4 little barbel.

I probably stayed an hour longer than I should have but other than that I coped pretty well and dont feel too bad now. The real test will be how I feel tomorrow but I'm glad I made the effort and got out. I desperately needed to but I've just been too bloody ill over the last 4-5 weeks.

Back on the meds next week. Deep joy !

Packed three different style rods in the car for three different venues today.

Kicked off by arriving at Westgate on Sea for high tide at 8am, my heart sank when I saw a very murky water with no clarity at all, this surprised me as we have had a couple of very calm days with little if any wind.

Casting a lure in hope of finding Bass was a tall order but having made the effort I had to give it a go, I chucked various pieces of metal, rubber eels, and feathers, all to no avail, packed up after a hour. The good news was that Westgate Bay has an excellent cafe, it featured recently as a location for the excellent sci fi drama, Humans. A rare treat of a bacon sarnie with a mug of tea went down a treat before moving on to venue number two.

Next stop about ten miles away, Grove Ferry on the river Stour. Drop shotting was the chosen discipline, fishing between the various moored boats.

kEZbLal.jpg

A few savage hits but nothing hooked early on but when I changed to a smaller lure ( Fox Micro spikey Fry) the hits converted to hooked perch, albeit on the small side, a few Jacks livened up the sport putting a nice bend in the pencil thin rod making for a fun few hours.

GvCpQSG.jpg

Homeward bound but not before stopping off at my home ground of Canterbury, this time a bit of jigging instead of drop shotting. The river was in a poor way with weed cutting going on further upstream making fishing almost a hopeless exercise, caught two small perch, did some shopping in Sainsbury’s (extra large eggs) and called it a day, an enjoyable if not an entirely successful one.

You packed in a lot today John! I plan to go after perch and pike very soon! A venue that I thought did not have pike apparently does and I have the agreement of the owner to fish for them!

Great day thanks Mike. Look forward to the next one. Used the 13' Greys today in just over 5' of water. While I really like using the 10'6" as far as playing fish is concerned it does have its downside if you get into anything bigger when you can't stand up. A couple of views of Dunham fisheries Whiteoaks from the south end. You can just about make out Mike about 1/3 across and half way up in the second pic.

DNM_Mike_20181004_081439_sml.jpg

Quite a long way of the hundred Mike, 31 all told. Two Commons, one Mirror all around the three pound mark, one small F1, the Rudd Mike mentioned and the rest about 70/30 Crucians/Skimmers plus a few micro fish of undetermined species not counted. All but one on bread again. The Rudd went to caster/maggot I think. Loose feeding maggots, casters, hemp and the odd bit of corn. Couldn't get a look in with meat or corn. They have matches on Wednesdays, maybe that has something to do with it. It was a little chilly early on and the brief periods when the sun did show were very welcome.
