I tried another pit yesterday based on the proverb 'a change is as good as a rest' and what a load of rubbish it turned out to be. Well, not rubbish exactly but it could have been so much better, if only................................................
True to form, I was passing over Marlow Bridge at around 06.15 and the sight that met my eyes was amazing as just enough light in the sky turned the water upstream of the weir into what looked like a smooth sheet of gold. This, along with the very heavy mist rising up below it , gave it an almost eerie feel, and had a naked women risen up and danced along the weir cill I would not have been surprised. As it was nothing of the sort appeared...........
Unsurprisingly, i found the pit devoid of fisherman so I had a choice of swims, but I still found myself dumping the gear and wandering up and down trying to make a decision. Sometimes I think it easier to find some swims occupied as this forces a decision....
In the end I plumbed for one that give lasting shade over the swim as the morning wore on, but also offering the chance of giving me a little warmth once the sun was higher in the sky. This would not the case for an hour or two and I knew I would suffer a mighty chilly spell until it happened. I don't mind cold mornings but it is still a shock to the system and I was pleased I had called the thermal gear into action when choosing wearing apparel the evening before, and this included the heavy gloves which I kept on as I set up the chair and moved everything into position.
At 2 degrees, it was still damned cold though, and I really felt my 75 years for a time!
On the particular water and at this time of year I'm still partial to hemp fishing (with punch as a backup) and although I gave thought to buying a pint of reds, I decided he seed would give me the best chance of fish without intrusion from pesky carp and equally annoying small perch. I mentioned gloves; What a boon they turned out to be as I went through the process of fixing No 8 shot with reasonably warm fingers!
Having got the hot tea out of the way, I settled down and made my first cast which is a bit of a misnomer as it was more the 'laying' of the float onto the surface in a straight line, allowing the seed to drop slowly through 5' water to end up some 6" off the bottom, but all the time tight to the just sunken rod tip. Several casts produced the odd dip of the float but nothing worth striking so I increased the loose feed and this (pure assumption on my part but possibly correct) induced the roach into activity as the next cast had a fish almost self hooking itself before the bait reached bottom, causing the rod tip to stab round. A nice 8" fish...
(I have done this 'tight line' fishing many times in the past when using hemp (even one or two rod lengths out) spraying hemp on the surface and casting into it. I've mentioned this before and it can produce very good fish in among the smaller samples. Casting in a straight line and tightening to the float is the way to go, imo, and almost has the fish in a frenzy at times....)
Anyway, I pushed on while the going was good and managed a further 10 fish before (and why does it happen with such monotonous regularity?) the fish stopped feeding to all intense and purposes, not only deep, but at all levels! Every fish hooked had been drawn from the swim, none had been lost and the feed went in at a trickle (as all the good books tell you) yet still they went AWOL. I couldn't be disappointed but the catch was turning into a very good one and it is frustration more than anything....
From that point forward it was a case of searching for fish and I did find some up in the water for a time, but they too thought 'too much of a good thing' etc. etc. and stopped feeding almost as soon as they had started. In the end I made up some liccy bread and fished the punch for any number of fish, but all were small and had little trouble in sinking the 3" long pigeon feather float. On occasion, the float, under the rod top, was almost out of sight before I'd gathered my wits and struck!!
Lovely morning and great to be out. Plenty of bird song with one or two long tailed tits to keep me company....
Out again Tuesday, all being well..
