Perhaps you should've tried a single maggot on a 20 to 8oz bottom - you couldn't help but catch !!!

Still, at least you know what they DON'T take, so you have moved forward...

Love the names of the 'baits', though............................

That's true Tee-Cee; I think it would have been a bit easier and would probably have got a better stamp of fish (maybe :))

But... I've got to say I'm really enjoying this type of fishing, being a bit of a fidgety type of person:eek:, who likes to keep moving along and casting out (especially at this type of year).

I'm also enjoying the challenge of trying to master this 'finesse' type of fishing...
you literally have to raise the tip 3",wind the slack, wait 3 seconds and then repeat (bit boring actually, until a fish hits).

Obviously in the hope that something big and perch shaped comes my way at some point in the proceedings!:D

Frost on the windscreen this morning was to be expected - ice covering my water for the day, was not, although had I thought about it, the very cold nights since the week end should have told me what to expect !
The ice was very thin, but it covered the whole water, so to fish at all I needed to clear a swim, which I did with a convenient 6' length of 3" square timber joist, part of a pile waiting to be used for repairs to various swims...
A ten minute spell of gently wafting this thing back and forth soon cleared an area a rod length out, so I realised I would be dropping the float into the cleared area, rather than casting. It crossed my mind that a Pole would've been most useful !
Tackling up, I noticed the unhooking mat was covered in a layer of frost almost immediately, so I knew I would need to keep the rod well above the surface if I was to avoid frozen rings, and should a decent fish bite, the loss of it and the tackle because I could not give line...
Strangely enough it wasn't that cold as the air was very dry ( unlike yesterday with it's damp, cold air and drizzle ) so it was reasonable comfortable to sit and fish - for the first couple of hours anyway !!
The catch, if you can call it that, consisted a 3/4lb perch, a 1/2lb roach, and a few small perch off the bottom, all on red maggots. I missed many fish because I foolishly waited for dips of the float to develop into a proper take, as when I did strike at a dip, I connected with a fish ! I again used a very light, strong smelling ground bait in minute quantities with loose kept to a minimum. The landing net froze to the unhooking mat which made things interesting when landing the perch !

A pal had one bite for a 1lb roach in prime condition which forced him to fish on for another couple of hours - all to no avail....

All things considered, a very enjoyable session with the odd blaze of sunshine raising the air temperature a tad for a couple of hours, and hopefully I shall do a repeat performance tomorrow, although looking at the forecast I may need to suffer temperatures below this mornings -2 degrees !
Perhaps I shall do a 9,30 / 2.30 instead...............................................

I got to Keston the other day for the first time this year.
Was bitterly cold with rain here and there. Ideal pike weather.
Was hard work, lots of recasting and trying all areas but eventually got this little pike. My smallest for ages!
No monster, but as with all Keston pike, it was a stunner!

I went to Tunnel Barn Farm again today, with a few of the lads from our thurs club, but we couldnt get on the match,so we opted to fish High Pool, after a slow start i managed to catch steady for the most part, with a few quiet spells, ending up with 45 F1,s for 35-0-0,fishing 4mm expanders, tapping in a few micros after each fish...Bad H came top on the day with 60 f1,s for 49-0-0,and John(Bagger) Bates 3rd with 25-0-0....A cracking days fishing, with bites nearly all match..Gazza:D

Last Saturday I fished a 12 pegger float only silvers match on a North Oxfordshire ressie. Blanked in style....
Not out now until Sunday ( which is looking slightly warmer) at Milton pools near Oxford.

Ive been a bit busy this week but I have a great admiration for all the brave anglers who have wet a line in this extremely cold and hard spell.

I will be brief....

I went out this morning but before unloading the car I checked on the ice situation....Yesterday okay, today absolutely solid, so the car thermometer wasn't lying when it said -6 degrees at 8am (this near Reading, Berks) ! (also -8 at Benson in Oxfordshire ).

I did try to smash through the ice ( with said timber joist mentioned in my previous post ) but the bl**dy thing just bounced off - and that was with vertical blows !! Some broke away, but damn it, I'm not an Eskimo !!!

I cannot see it changing any time soon ( in Berks/ Bucks ), leastwise sufficiently to clear a 'patch', so I may need to turn to the Loddon or Thames next week......

SIMON....I see you are fishing a north Oxon Res. on Sunday. Not to tell you what to do, but with Oxon area having some very cold 'spots' ( such as Benson etc ) you might want to check on marginal ice at your venue....

Good luck if you go, though !!

Ah well, back to the float making I suppose - drat !!

The pike are looking a bit on the lean side for this time of year…

Actually it’s the closest I’ve been to one for a while and back to back blanks without so much as an enquiry for me on the pike now, I’m not overly concerned after a flying start back in October where I bagged two 20+ river fish and plenty of mid to upper doubles but I could really do with a run or two now, the water is mucky and cold at the moment with all the snow melt and salt washing in… It was bloody cold on the bank too!

In the absence of a fish or anything more interesting you can have the promised picture of the new super-size frying pan instead, six good size bangers and still room for a pony…

That’s it now... The recent new brolly, quiver and frying pan have all been used so the curse of the new kit should now be lifted :eek:mg:

Left everything geared up for a possible session over the weekend but might look towards a stillwater.

three or four chucks with an ice breaker and I'm fracked, the wet rope freezes my hands and I waste an hour of match time trying to tie a 24 to 0:06.....

I used the Luncheon Tongue that a lot of people here recommended using. The River was fining down nicely and although I have Pike on the brain a lot lately I decided to get 2 hours on the bank after a Chub or maybe a lucky Barbel.

I Couldn't find a swim as quickly as I liked but found this one. On the outside of a large bend with a fallen tree. Alarm bells rang and it just looked right compared to what I'd seen on the way up (when you get that feeling, Instinct maybe).

To be honest I haven't had great success on this stretch as blanks were the norm for me, partly due to the fact I go fishing at stupid times when the Rivers in flood etc.

Anyway cast over to the tree waited 2 minutes and the tip wrapped round and the battle commenced. The fight was strange, it felt big but wasn't going well. I saw glimpses of the fish and I instantly thought a bream. HOW WRONG WAS I!

Huge gut!, getting ready for spawning maybe?

I was physically shaking as she lay in the net for a rest. I knew this was my PB and there wasn't a mark on her. She weighed in at 5lb 1oz!, Such a shame sometimes when You haven't got anyone with you to take a picture. this was a special moment in my angling adventures as it's a Fish I absolutely love fishing for.

Pike this weekend hopefully:D

It was a tough call but after consulting my not overly enthusiastic and long suffering mate we decided to give the fishing a miss this weekend in favour of taking the opportunity of reckying some new waters today whilst the river is at least resembling its normal level and it's been very worthwhile.

Armed with nothing but a flask, notepad and a pen we covered a fair few miles of riverbank and I can't wait to break some new ground and get on some of it next week, it's definitely put a bit of colour in me cheeks as well as renewing my enthusiasm to get out there and make the most of it for the remaining seven weeks or so of the season.

The nights are noticeably drawing out now... :)
