Are there different types of Ruffe? I use to catch loads of what we also knew as Pope out of the Thames when I was a kid, I don’t remember them looking like that, they were very ugly almost prehistoric looking things.

Ruffe/Pope look like a small perch without the stripes and a touch of dark mottling instead. Are you sure you aren't thinking of bullheads, aka miller's thumbs?

. As the splosh of feeders edged a bit closer it was time to whack out the freelined bread again and a few more carp found the net, it was fun but too easy, the missus seemed impressed though although I was happier with the ruffe the day before.

It's a funny old game[/QUOTE]

I sometimes fish ponds like that, not silly overstocked but catching them on floating bread almost feels like cheating - so I often don't bother. Meanwhile, method feeders splash around the lake (drawing blanks) whilst the carp cruise about the surface in front of them all :wh

I spent many years fishing Makins,Mallory Park and many other similar fisheries, during the winter I enjoyed them as they were a challenge, but in summer for the most part it was ridiculous,at Makins I had 12 consecutive sessions of more than 100lbs,this was on different swims, baits and lakes, the biggest catch was just over 300lbs of carp,15 doubles, which I caught on dog biscuit, spending half the day not casting, just feeding odd biscuit to get them close enough to catch free lining, absurd, other catches were of chub,orfe,barbel,bream,tench....

A ruffe or as I used to call them POPE. How nice. I have not seen one for donkeys years.

Neither have I. Used to catch shedloads from my local River Colne when I was a kid....some proper bigguns too. My then fishing mate had one which he weighed at a flicker under 5 oz and that is a very big ruffe indeed.

Just looked at some images, you’re right, I’ve done the Ruffe a disservice for the past fifty years!

"Daddy" Ruffe. I've only ever caught a handful of them at a time .... and usually when you do it means the end of the day's sport!
But on one occasion (GUC at Heyford) I sat next to Ged Cash from Rugby whilst he caught 10 pounds of the little blighters!
I had 6 pounds of perch and one ruffe .... Polly on the other side of Ged had similar of Roach and no Ruffe ...talk about shoaled up!

3 of us decided to give the Wendover arm a go today at Little Tring. We rarely hold matches there as the parking is inadequate.
There is also a very steep set of steps to get down, which means unloading all your gear and carrying it down and up again at the end. Thus it is rarely fished which is a shame as it holds some very good fish.

This spot is at the end of the arm where it widens out into a big wide basin.

One mate was there when I arrived and was catching skimmers on pinkie over gb. I chopped some worms and cupped them in across by the bush in the top picture.

I fished worm on the pole for a good hour and a half without a bite? The wind was chilly and strengthening by the minute, in the end I couldn’t hold the pole properly and gave up on that line.
I came in short on topkit +1 and fished a very light rig with pinkie just over the near shelf. I fed 6 pinkies every minute for a while before the float went straight down. I lifted into something solid which I suspected was a big bream, then it woke up. My no3 Matrix elastic started to come out sharpish, my next thought was carp as there’s a few in there. After a while I stood up and with my arm stretched upwards, yards of elastic out, I caught a glimpse of the fish, a huge chub. Then disaster! It swam behind my keepnet and out the other side and pinged off...
Gutted!
I carried on and had some quality roach, perch and skimmers before the black clouds started rolling in when we all packed up and went before the deluge began...

I retrieved my old Daiwa pole from the back of my rod cabinet and re elasticated it. Its about 25 yrs old and not used for many years.

I went to my reservoir syndi water with maggots. I had roach, rudd, a bream and some perch. The wind got up for the last hour and spoilt things somewhat but I weighed them in a big landing net Peter Crabtree style for 15lb. I had a small carp as well that realy gave me the run around.

The promised rain held off and I had a thoroughly enjoyable day doing something a bit different.

I'd seen enough small tench for a while, but a friend was keen to give the lake a try. No need to start early I said, but when we arrived, the combination of other anglers on the bank and some imminent wet and windy weather gave us a bit of a swim selection problem, if we wanted to fish anywhere close to each other.

It worked out ok, mostly. The bad weather held off for longer than predicted, and fishing on the sheltered bank was comfortable

And my friend, in the hotter peg, judged that he caught more tench from it than his combined lifetime catch (He's been more of a river angler) so that worked out well.

For the sake of fishing within earshot, I'd opted to try a shallow swim that will be full of fish in a few more weeks, but wasn't today. I had to listen to pretty well continuous splashing noises from up the bank for a couple of hours without a bite, before some fish moved in and I joined him in catching a few.

Decided to have a fun day at Dunham Fisheries yesterday on Whiteoaks. First fish out a couple of small Roach on maggot. I always start with maggot just to see if there's anything there at all. Feeding bits of caster, hemp and maggot seemed to keep the fish there. Caught on various baits but by far the most productive being bread flake which is in keeping with past experience. For whatever reason they don't seem too interested in punch. 3.3lb hooklength to an 18s saw me bumping off a couple of better fish so switched to a 16. Guru hooks are on the big side but 18s is still a little small for flake - no more bump offs. One 3lb ish Common, 8 or nine Ide to about 8oz, skimmers to about 2lb, lots of Crucians to about 10oz but mostly small and lots of vividly coloured Rudd, biggest probably around 4oz. As predicted it started bucketing it down around 1pm but it didn't affect the fishing. Steady throughout the day with a total of 67. Went home rather soggy but happy:)

The old adage 'after the Lord mayor's show' comes to mind went back to my deep venue and struggled, the cold North West wind really naffed it,I had seven roach between 4-8ozs ,but apart from that had strange knocks all day(which made me think I had another whiskered visitor)with very few proper bites, with it being overcast and windy seemed odd,'that is why they call it fishing, not catching'.

I went out with a mate for a quick ultra light lure session yesterday afternoon.
The venue was on old farm pond where we caught over 50 Rudd in an hour or so.
Great fun!
