Well, and at the request of S63, I am posting about my day beachcasting. No fish as usual but very nice nonetheless.

I was using ragworm or the french equivalent and apart from a few knocks by small fish and the inexorable tug from the wind and undertow, nothing to bend the tip. I improved my tan though!

Thank you Michael, that looks a whole more attractive than Westgate On Sea did this morning, what species are caught along there from the local aces?

PS you’re in good company, I requested the River Piker make a video on trace making, he complied within a few days.

Out fishing today for the first time in a month - making boilies for carp trips and other general tasks like mowing the lawn etc etc.
The venue - a large reservoir noted for . . . bream - had 18 of then to just under 6lb,had two on at once,
Nice to get out again but 2C and thick fog was not the best start but it did lift about 10am and the sun broke through.Sat watching an osprey working its way north to the shallows then turning but lost track of it.Five minutes or so later it flew north up the middle of the reservoir with a skimmer of about a pound in its talons.Returning tomorrow hoping for a tench and a few roach.

Went today in bright conditions which made it tough, had 20 roach to a pound and 5 bream to 4-8,slider and pellet, the pike were in top form, going for absolutely everything... Had a little unlucky run for an hour or so,first I foul hooked a pike, after it came off the hook needed changing, the very next cast I went to retrieve and felt weight on the end, sound in to find a 4/5'' cluster of zebra mussels, carefully entangled it,but the beggars had damaged the line,so new hook length again, then about 15 minutes later two coots were going through their territorial battles, the one being chased dived...right on my slider,an ensuing struggle until it came off left me with a broken float(b@st@rd,as it was a homemade float that was spot on for the job),so a complete re-tackle and sort out required, ahhh mother nature eh?

Stuck on the chuffin M25 somewhere between Heathro
The plan was to try out a new ( to us) water for tench...but the BF bought himself a new pole at the weekend and wanted to give it a try out on the Bury Hill crucians.

Wish I'd been there to see him relieved of several hundred quid. Its a much as I can do to get the price of the Farmoor Toll bridge off him. Thats 5p btw !

Anyway...off to BH we went and jeepers was it cold this morning. Plotted up in our usual area and struggled and shivered our way through a very dour morning. We were both getting little dips and nudges and the odd proper bite but it was really hard going...in fact it wasnt until well past noon that I added my 2nd crucian to the haul. The BF had had a couple too and a shedload of little rudd and perch on the maggot. I'd had the odd perch but no silvers. Once the day ( and I) had warmed up I thought it might fish a bit better and so it did....for me at least. I'd been feeding 2 margin swims and trying them without success every now and then but suddenly some proper bites. It never really got properly going but for a couple of hours ( 1-30 to 3-30) it was steady. I ended up with 16 crucian between about 1-4 and a couple of low 2 pounders. The BF was looking very glum at this because he just could not buy a bite. I think he ended up with 4 fish...maybe 5 but not a single tench between us. I'm pretty sure a couple of cold nights did for us but such is the way of things. Its a shallow lake and very susceptible to temperature shifts.

I suspect it would have got better and better into the afternoon/evening but I had to scarper in order to hack my way back round the M25 with any chance of getting home before about 8 pm. In the end it wasn't too bad but it still took me twice as long to get home as it did to get there.

I think Grumpy might try to get a refund on his pole as it clearly isnt fit for purpose.....or maybe he isn't ! Just one of those days for him....we all get them and it will be my turn next. Today it was the maggot they wanted....last week it was pellet but the BF never had a bite on pellet today. I had maybe 4 of my fish on pellet....the rest to double red maggot on those lethal Guru F1 hooks

Despite it being tough I just love it down there this time of year.

Nearly forgot.....double Brucie Bonus. Heard my first cuckoo of the year. Magic !

Alledgedly there are flat fish, black bream, gilt head bream, mackerel , grouper, rascasse, bass, red mullet, grey mullet and others with French names , nobody caught a thing yesterday while I was there even with 4 or 5 rods!!!

The rod was a cheap Caperlan 3.5 m beachcaster I had seen plenty of( when in Rome ) with a Penn Battle II 4000 reel with braided line. The rod has a quiver tip of sorts and just feels better than my Grauvell 4.5 m pylon!

14 codgers fished yesterday on the canal at Apsley near Hemel. I fished close to the spot Rob fished the other week. With chub in mind I went quite heavy with 3lb bottom and an 18 hook. No chub showed and after 3 hours of spraying maggots I was being beaten off the next peg by my opponent who was catching roach using light gear.

I changed my end tackle accordingly, but really struggled to make any inroads into his ever increasing tally of roach.
He ended up winning the match with 4lb+ whereas I had just 15oz of bits...
Oh well, you can’t win them all, at least I enjoyed it and the weather was very pleasant...

Simon,do you find the fishing tails off during the hot weather on the cut,or do you try to fish the quieter pounds,I ask because of the far greater boat traffic these days?

I must have made at least half a dozen trips to the estate since my last report, I’ve been consistent in not catching anything noteworthy unless you class bream and skimmers noteworthy. The tench are very late in waking up this season, I only have to look back twelve months on this thread to read my various tinca catches in the opening few weeks of the new season. A few golden tench have come out which is good news as they were only stocked last year, a delightful looking fish and I hope to capture one soon.

The thought of yet another session dominated by bream was not something I wanted to consider so a change of tactic to target.............yes you read it right........... carp.:eek:mg:

I couldn’t bring myself to sit behind buzzers falling asleep, had to be the only carp fishing I really enjoy, fishing with dog biscuits on the surface. I’ve never succeeded on this lake but reports of other members having some joy was enough to spur me into action.

On arrival the resident Ninja Turtle was having its daily swim.

Surface fishing is difficult with ducks and moorhens ever present and eager to devour anything they spot. I brought with me a loaf of bread to use as a diversion which worked to a degree, the other problem is the amount of debris on the water, being treelined and numerous reed beds there’s a lot of it at certain times of year, today was no exception.

The carp were soon cruising the surface as the temperatures rose but not interested in the freebies I was throwing in, the ducks soon hoovered up.

After nearly three hours I was ready to give up having not had as much as a take but it was the “last cast” saviour today as the water erupted when a common engulfed my chum mixer and it was fight on, these estate carp are fairly wild and fight hard, it was a joyous change sliding this into the net rather than a bream.

A comfortably warm afternoon without another soul present, perfect.

Simon,I understand if it wasn't for boats our canals would be choked with weed and very clear, when I used to fish the canal a lot although we thought boat traffic was heavy,I can't imagine it was anything like it is today,I'm really interested on how the fish react to it all...

S63 If the estate lake is fairly shallow where the carp and ducks compete for mixers try this.

Rig up with a running lead and a mixer on the surface. The mixer can be drawn under out of site on the approach of the ducks.

Lovely fish John and worth the effort and patience. Nice pics too!

The sun has just set behind the high hills on the other side of the valley and I couldn't resist.

Why not start a canal thread on the subject Alan? I'm sure there's many theories and questions we could all try and get our heads round regarding the enigma that is our man made waterways

Are you sitting on a veranda sipping a gin and tonic or a glass of red whilst admiring that wonderful vista?

Osprey watching at the big reservoir again today with the mayhem of bream hauling getting fish to 6lb.I don't think any tench or roach stand a chance with the numbers of bream.Must have caught the smallest in there at about 12oz until I saw the osprey flying off with a smaller one in its talons. With red kites and buzzards and only misty this morning instead of thick fog it was fantastic to be out and about. With the sun out butterflies took to the wing and saw several small copper butterflies, gorgeous and in pristine condition.

I fished my club lake today. One fish only. A male tench of 4lb 6 ozs. I can't wait for the water to warm a bit although there will never be as many caught as in Nottskevs lake. Not that many in there:wh

Sunday, I fished a club water. Amongst the premier ticket carp lakes, there's a pond for the plebs noted for its roach and bream. Hmm

Tuesday evening, I went for a couple of hours to a local club water where you can fish feeder in the hope of big tench. Indeed

I was wanting to give the tench lake a rest, but at least I catch what I'm fishing for there, and the signage is inspirational in these days of what Sam Vimes defined as "average angler territory"

I set up after 2pm, having spent the morning mowing the lawns. Actually "lawns" would be flattering them, so I should say "cutting the grass", and it was nice to find the lake deserted.

I'd have stayed on longer, but I wanted to be in in plenty of time to watch the Liverpool game, so I was away before 6. The lake wasn't on fire, but I still enjoyed this mixed catch of roach and tench.
