Last night I fished the GUC at Marsworth, the final match of the evening series..

My place in the league was already established so this result made no difference. Lucky really as my 4:2:0 didn’t frame...
I fished punch close in on a light canal grey waggler taking roach and small skimmers..

Came 4th out of 14 in the league which was tight at the top.

Grabbed a few hours on the estate this morning anxious to get some fishing in before the impending storm. Arrived at 8-30 with Ralph already set up and landing a roach.

A succession of skimmers and the odd roach, interrupted from a shout from Ralph that he had a decent fish on, his first estate tench, well done Sir.

I was getting a bit grumpy with the constant harassment of my bait with skimmmers, tiny roach and rudd, the lake really needs thinning out, the cru’s and tench are so much harder to target than in previous years. Many of the members choose to chuck a lead over to the far bank where the carp reside and so it would seem do the tench, strong tackle is needed with the wild carp going to twenty pounds, not really my cup of tea, ok when scrapping with the carp but the tench aren’t great sport winching them across the lake on 12lb line.

Anyway, somewhat foolishly I stuck a heavy pellet waggler float onto my 4lb line and cast as close to the reeds on the far bank as I dare, didn’t take long before the float disappeared with a carp taking me straight into the reeds with no chance of having a short battle. I refused to give in and the next bite was struck into with some prospect of a fighting chance and a few moments later a tench or about 2 to 3lb slid into the net.

That was my lot for the day, Ralph had already left and I was left pondering how to approach the lake on future visits, take the carp rod with 12lb line or persevere with the match rod using 4lb line on the float spending hours catching skimmers with the hope of a cru or a tench at some stage of the day. Luckily just sitting in such glorious surroundings soon soothes any grumpyness and anything else must be regarded as a bonus.

Early alarm call in the morning for another bass search.

A big Tidal Trent tide and a "spent " flood - lots of fresh water and fading colour-- what better conditions to have a session with hemp n tare on the river.
Twenty minutes without a bite then I had four on the trot, nice stamp roach too.
Then the tide turned and my position made it difficult to run my John Dean stick so I decided on a break until the ebb.
It turned at 2-30pm and a few free samples in the swim and first trot I was in again-- they wanted it !
Bites most run down and typical tare fishing they were fast but not unmissable and Inside the hour I had twenty in the net.
The wind picked up and it made presentation difficult , foot hi waves must have had the tare dancing like a yo yo but still the fish wanted it with gusto.
Then came a heavy shower that soaked me to the skin but hey, so were the fish so I carried on , it was warm so no matter.
I finally ended up with sixty three nice Roach with a cracker that went a pound plus and a few more a half pound or so.
I loved every minute.
I fished a total of three and a quarter hours with near perfect conditions save for the wind.

Stick with the match rod John ; far superior and more fun. Try a feeder rod instead of a carp rod.

Great post Mick. The like button has gone awol so I couldn't press it.

Footnote to my post.
I picked an angling times up today and they've done a big spread on Trent roach. One line had me smiling as it said ten years ago you couldn't get a bite from a roach!
Loads cods tbh, all you had to do was fish the lower Tidal , the lower the better as a tide would/will / does colour up the water .
They never went away down there, ever!!

I'm not being funny, but why do you have such a long rod rest? I've often noticed. It looks as if the tip section rests on it. Doesn't your rod sag in the middle? You asked me once why I set my seatbox back to front, and there was a reason, so I'm assuming there must be an explanation.

I’ve given that thought Mike, you have to get within inches of the Reed bed for takes, hook a decent carp and you have to bully it out instantly, don’t think my feeder rod would be up to that.

Sticking to the Matchpro on float seems a far more enjoyable method, I’ll have to work on the bailiff and owner to get the lake netted with a big reduction of the small stuff.

Its a telescopic feeder arm and will go much shorter.
I usually strap it together with my landing net handle, which when at its shortest is the same length.
Can't say I've noticed my rod sagging on it,
Simply habitual really, no specific purpose...

I use one of those feeder arms fitted to the front leg of my chair with a angle adapter and a rear rest for the butt. I use it for float fishing, they are great on wooden platforms and hard standings.

I met John (s63) at the estate lake today, after he suggested it last night. Any excuse to go fishing is a welcome change from all the stuff I am supposed to be doing, now we have eventually moved to Kent from our London home of forty years. There is so much to sort out, I think it might take a while...

It was only a short morning session, something I could not do before as any fishing was at least an hour away. I had a great few hours catching all sorts of fish (all the ones that make John grumpy). The best fish of the session was my first estate-lake tench.

Tomorrow I have to drop the missus of in Canterbury at 06:00 so I should be back just in time to see John catch that elusive bass from the pier around the corner from our new house. Living this close to the sea, I had better take up sea fishing...

Ralph.

I blanked for barbel yesterday evening. Just a bream and some perch despite the river looking perfect and babel turning over in front of me, so they were definitely there!
I am going to start a post in the barbel section re yesterday and some questions.

I had a mate who called sea fishing The Lucky Dip! I love it and don’t do enough of it.

As kids this was the nearest place to fish in the close season. We caught the train from Romford and really abused our fibreglass spinning rods and Intrepid reels on the pier.. Never caught much but it was a day out.

I haven't had much chance to fish since the end of May, what with chasing my team(Bangaldesh) around England and Wales for the Cricket World Cup and being privileged to watch the most unbelievable one day game in the final for eight weeks only to come back to the passing of my last remaining uncle (who was the first captain of the Bangladesh cricket team and was terminally ill).

Anyway made it to the tea estate on a working visit with my son who is home on holiday from studying in the USA.

He wanted to pick up the basics of method feeder fishing. So last evening saw Jibon (under whose care the lake is) and the two of us at the bank of the catfish and carp farming lake. It has been netted out as I have mentioned before, but there are a few fish which had escaped the net still there. Nothing big ranging from 1/2 to a couple of pounds.

We armed ourselves with a couple of Tackle Box Darent Valley 8ft Specialist Quiver rods. Their small size make them easy to manage at night and were ideal for the size of fish.

For the method mix we mixed up a 50-50 mixture of whole meal flour and fishmeal powder wetting it down with some lake water in which we had added 10ml of liquid betaine and 50ml of GLM liquid. Bait was a very soft paste of bread and ants eggs.

We fished the paste moulded on to size 14 Drennan wide gape specialist hooks. Most of the leftover fish are Rohu (Labeo rohita), an Indian cyprinid, which has a fimbriated lip. With this it tends to pick up and squeeze its food into its mouth as opposed to just sucking it in. This we reckoned negated the hair rig. Although large Rohu will suck in smaller baits and are easily caught on hair rigs, the fish here were small. The ultra soft paste would allow the hook to be pulled out by the tension of the quiver when the fish ran with the bait and would hook the fish with the small 20 gram flatbed feeder aiding this process. That, at least , was the theory. It worked. We caught a number of fish. But when my son was broken by a fish I re rigged him with a hair rig, moulding the paste round one of Laguna's special bait stops. He continued to catch Rohu. So much for the fimbriated mouth theory.

The biggest one we got. They can get to well over 50 lbs.

A yellow tailed catfish that muscled into the action. They fight very hard.

Tomorrow we fish the "big fish" lake.

All the best

Good to see Darent Valley rods travelling to many corners of the globe.

My condolences for your loss.
