I went out on consecutive days - a bit of a rarity - and tested a couple of new (or new to me) tackle items. Both had a bit of a connection to our resident tackle guru - the reel was his recommendation and the rod used to belong to him - so I have to thank Sam Vimes for his role in this report.

Yesterday I went out on a limb to a good swim a day too early ( sheer impatience) and found the extra water, which was running off slower than I'd guessed, was still making it a bit of a mess. I'd been advised, looking for replacement for my old Shimano Twinpower XTRA's to look at the Stradic Ci4 4000 RA. I'd had a lucky find on eBay, and gave it a try for the first time yesterday. The reel was great, and a couple of barbel on relatively light gear showed the drag was excellent. I'd been thinking Shimano had stopped making the kind of thing I like, so I was pleased to be proved wrong. The fishing was a bit random.

Today, I went to test out a float rod. I'd asked Sam Vimes what he thought was a decent 15' power float rod, and came away with a beautifully kept Shimano Technium Diaflash 15' Specimen. I set up in a swim with 11 or 12' of water pushing through, 8lb line with a .22 hooklength, and , to start with, a 3g Bolo float. I later changed it to a 6g balsa with a thicker top and much better resistance to dragging under. I had a few runs through to see if things were clear, then, given the depth and flow, decided to bait drop some hemp and caster in.
I swung out the dropper, (on another old rod, of course) down it went and that was the last I saw of it as it wedged solid in the patch of rocks I'd so cleverly found. Ho hum.
Still, things got better after that. Loose feeding hemp and caster with bits of punched meat on the hook, I got 4 bites in the next three hours. One I missed. Another, I hooked a barbel which came off after a few seconds. The other two stayed on, and the rod was superb: light enough to hold throughout and well up to dealing with barbel in some deep, heavy water.

Good to see Darent Valley rods travelling to many corners of the globe.

My condolences for your loss.

Thank you S63 but he was at the end of the road. I will miss him as he gave me my love of cricket.

The Darent Valley rods are excellent weapons. I spent a couple of hours in the TackleBox and came away somewhat richer in fishing tackle.!

All the best

Love that point of view, curiously the opposite of Mrs J’s! I can’t wait to to tell her ( with your permission, of course) I came away from the tackle ( or bicycle, motorbike, ski or tool) shop somewhat richer!

Lovely array of fish Kev, I like the fact your main line is 8lb but your hooklength is .22, whatever that is!

I think of "thick" reel lines in old money and "thin" hooklength line (Silstar Match Team, from .08 to .22 in my case) in diameters. Probably makes no sense, I agree.

Back to my old fishery yesterday, on my own as mick is recovering from a operation on his hand, arrived at six o clock in the morning, and was pleased to see there was no one on the peg I fancied, and just one more fisherman on opposite side of the pond.

Set up carp rod on alarm for the barbel and carp, with garlic flavoured pepperami for bait, and then set my pole up to fish the left hand margin, fed two mm pellets and a eight mm robin red pellet on a hair, but the hordes of small Rudd and roach made this difficult as they kept moving the pellet around, had to wait till a carp came into the swim, which moved the small stuff away, and then drop the bait in nr it.

Had one run on carp rod which got me this one.

That was the only run on that rod all day, despite trying different areas. Meanwhile on the pole I was catching a few carp, and in between I was fishing out for the Rudd and roach.

Getting a good few as well.
For some reason it’s saying I’ve no photos to upload, any way I finished up with some forty roach and Rudd, mainly four to six ounces, with the odd one about half a pound, and five carp three to five pounds, so plenty of action and nice weather after one early shower.

8 codgers fished yesterday at Marsworth on a hot and breezy GUC. This venue has been out of sorts recently, the evening match results weren’t too good earlier this week.

I fished what can be a good chub peg so started on waggler and maggot across tight to a boat.
Plenty of bites but alas no chub.
Spent 2 hours on that, landing some perch, skimmers, ruff and loads of gudgeon .
With 3 hours left I changed to a light pole rig on the rod and fished close in with punch, this bought small roach and more gudgeon. I wasn’t getting any bonus fish so I chopped a load of worms and fed them via dropper just over the near shelf.
Worm sections on the hook brought numerous ruff and small perch, a couple of wafer thin skimmers and of course more gudgeon!
At the end of the 5 hours I’d caught a lot of fish but no real size and weighed in 3:9:0.

Last week’s winner Brian excelled himself again on hemp and tares with an 8:15:0 winning bag of roach, he told me it took 30minutes of feeding hemp before he got them going. Patience is a virtue...

I don't know if the fish I've been catching are used to my paste and starting to avoid it or the recent heavy rain we've had is making the fish skittish.
I've gone from virtually every bite producing fish to the infuriating dips and lifts with next to no fish.
I had a few fish but the hectic fishing of the last 3 months has come to an end or so it seems.
Did I tell you I hate fishing. Next week back to pellet.

Hi All,

As I put on my 'I'm back, I think' thread, got out for the first time since May on Tuesday.

Brilliant afternoon and evening with two old mates on a very secluded Sussex lake. Fished a swim on the end of an island with a weedbed about 40yds out in front. Used light, through action carp rods (1.75lbs) a flat bed method feeder with a spicy method mix with maize and hemp added and a lot of liquid (fermented wheat gloop) syrup saturated chick peas on a short hooklink.

Great fun afternoon, I had 8 (lost 3) biggest just over 10lbs, all commons. Great banter. I didn't realise how much I've missed it. Will be out again soon.

Tight Lines and Bent Rods

Went down to the Colne today and walked down to the long straight stretch which was sheltered from the wind. Dropped into a swim which had obviously not been fished lately judging by the nettles. Did some gardening first and cleared a gap.

A nice wide swim with the main flow across by the gardens. Slack on my side and creeping along down the middle. 15’ ultralight and a 4bb stickfloat to a 20 red maggot hook.
Spent the first 5minutes pinging maggots across into the flow before my first cast. It didn’t seem to matter where I dropped the float in it was perch a chuck. Roach were over in the faster water but after a few they backed off. Just one chub and one nice dace put in an appearance...otherwise it was all perch.
Fished 9 to 3 with the last 3 hours only picking off the odd fish, there was a pike thrashing about for most of that, at one point it attacked my keepnet..
Ended up with about 7lb which I was happy with, I’d be ok if I i draw that peg in next week’s club fixture...

My local river has been very dour of late, extremely clear and low,
So I was pleased to see it had risen a few inches and was carrying a bit of colour from the rain.
I had a couple of swims in mind, the first one produced a very nice Chub and a couple of Dace, then went quiet, so i moved to the next one which again produced a Chub, allbeit a lot smaller...

IMG_20190810_153542653.jpg

Also some Dace, a couple of which were a really nice size...

The wind was a massive PITA, and i was getting pangs for my evening Ale, so called it a day.
Might try again tomorrow if the wind has dropped.

fished the specimen lake at Hamstell - blanked !
But had a fantastic day sitting in a bivvy talking to my Lad - really really enjoyed it
going back soon but this time we will put down a carpet of bait and fish over that

smashed it down all day too which only adds to the enjoyment of being in a bivvy

Didn’t fancy the club fixture on the canal, the venue is full of weed..
20 minutes down the M25 and I was at Runnymede

The Thames was a bit clear in the margins so I decided to fish a slider out in the deep water.
My peg was on the inside of a bend so it was shallow for a fair way out. As is the norm these days there was barely any flow, it’s so much better when it’s pushing a bit. Needed a 3.4 gr waggler to get out far enough where it was about 9’ deep.
I balled it with a kilo of dark roach gb and started on double maggot. Started catching roach straight away, then I hooked something big, it was charging off downstream and taking line.
Ping!
I hate that when I don’t see what it was..?
After a while I started getting bleak intercepting my maggots near the surface, drives me nuts!
Out came the tares. Even more frustrating, I was connecting with about 1 in 6 bites but when I did catch it was either a good roach or a chunky dace..
Found some ripe elderberries on a bush and they worked too.
During the early afternoon the banks got busy with kids, dogs and a general din.
Time to go.

Not a bad result but it will be better soon as Autumn gets underway.
