I went out for a couple of hours yesterday evening and again this morning. Considering that spring has sprung; blackthorn and cherry blossom abounding and I spotted a couple of orchids, it was cold, damp and miserable with wet mist inter spaced with light drizzle. The air temp' was supposed to be 12C but it felt around half that, and the river water was 7.2C and dropping back after heavy rain yesterday morning.

I drove down to the Vienne and tried a load of places I've not fished before. Basically, it meant plumbing the depth of any likely spot and if there was a metre or more water I'd plop a cube of luncheon meat close to the near bank and preferably under any trees or bushes that I could find. When that didn't work I tried maize on a lighter rod just to see what if anything was there. All in all I fished around 8 or 9 swims spaced along about 20km of river all for the same result - zilch.

I didnt fish but at three pm ran down to a local reservoir as match fishing has re started after a few years of repairs then lack of interest.
I wanted to know how the guys had got on as it may 7nterest me during the close river season.
The first few guys had caught but mainly small roach and a few perch, the guys in the middle had done very well with a fifteen plus winning wieght followed by a thirteen plus second place-- seven pl,us lbs (I think) came third. The othe end of the line seemed to peter out much like the guys at the other end. Impressions--- I think its worth a go, five minutes from home, nice surroundings, little cost save a pint or so of maggots and a little crumb.
Only thing needed was perhaps a little colour run in from the nearby slopes after a little rain and its a go.

Fished Thursday with a bitter wind to my back on a deep reservoir.Caught 9 decent perch to 1 and 3/4 and 3 decent roach to 1.1lb. on dead maggot and casters. Funnily the perch bites were more tentative and shy than the roach. All on the waggler at 14 feet deep on a small hook.

Due to family health matters I haven't fished solidly for some weeks, but I have managed the odd session on a local lake fishing for roach. As with JS above I too have experienced the same shy, tentative bites with both roach and perch to the point where it was impossible to tell what would come up from the depths.
I tried various floats/shotting patterns/hook types with the best results coming to single red maggot on a 20 fished ' handlebar ' fashion. I tried everything from a 6" bird quill to a decent waggler at all sorts of depths and still the bites were finicky, to the point where I probably struck at nothing ! Some of the better fish of both species were caught on the drop ( so it paid to experiment ) in depths ranging from 6' to 12' of water
Best fish over the period was perch at 2lb + and roach just over the lb so not too bad for a difficult water.........

ps I'm a lover of bread fishing and in trying it this past week I did catch a decent roach on flake. Any attempt to repeat this ( over the course of 2 hours, and the next day ) failed miserably, although going back on maggot produced fish immediately. That gave me food for thought in the evenings, but without producing any answers !!

3pm is a favourite time for me to start fishing on lakes. Commercials particularly. Dropping a lob or just about any bait alongside platforms at the end of matches is cost and time effective. 10 mins per swim is usually enough to pick up a decent tench or carp whilst sitting well back from the platform(no rod tips hanging over). It's the thing I like most about match fishing, someone else prebaits for you.
So I don't get in trouble I'll also quickly say I struggled for a few, very touchy bites on maggot on a club pond friday. A guy opposite was spodding in for carp. Bit early for so much bait?

Fished an Open match on the GUC nr Tring today against some formidable competition including an England international team member....
Dull and overcast to start with then bright sun all day. I drew a good roach peg and set up pole and started on punch. One chublet first chuck then nothing. Switched to single pinkie and potted in some GB and some choppy. Had about 3Ruff and 30 gudgeon down the track for 14oz.....not a single roach.

Winner had 3 chub for 9lb.. Follow ups of 2:9 and 2:8:8 ....
It fished really hard for everyone. I came 6th overall and second in my section.
17 fished....

Scratched around the canal from 3-4.30pm today, one bite in a lock, missed.

A few good chats with boaters, dodgy looking youths and a fisherman made the mini session more enjoyable :D

Popped out this morning with a mate to Newlands Hall.. firstly to give the new Matchbox S Class a run out and secondly cos my buddy Richard wanted to wet a line with his new(my old) box as well....
(we did have the option of doing a practice at Hills and Black at Fennes today, but half the club were there and a bit of peace and quiet was required, so Newlands got the nod)

We dropped in on a couple of pegs on the small F1 pond and started catching F1's from the off, on top 2+2's... Rich was on pellet hookers & feeding micro's and I was on corn & feeding hemp, the corn did the damage this morning, with me taking 41 fish and Rich on 30...

They were averaging about 2lb-ish and were in fine scrapping fettle, it amazes me how hard the little b#ggers pull.... As the morning wore on we found the fish moved out into open water, so as the bites started to dry up we added another section on till we were fishing at about 8 mts

Anyway, we fished till about 1pm and then it threatened rain, so the toys were stashed away and we headed homewards.

A bit of tweaking and shuffling gear about is required, as it always is with a new box, but overall I'm damn pleased with it... money well spent:thumbs:

Went for our usual 'end of season jaunt' on the Ribble Saturday before last , but fished at Walton-le-Dale as opposed to Ribchester. We were on a tidal stretch almost opposite the confluence with the river Darwen. We both put 2 feeder rods out & tried pellet, meat, worm, maggot, caster & neither of us had a touch all day. High points were a cheeky stoat peeking out from its burrow and a pint afterwards :w.

Clearly in the mood for harder venues I went to Little Crosby on Sunday, but with the sun shining brightly it was more in hope than expectation of some decent roach. I opted for a pond I hadn't fished previously and struggled for 5 Roach, the best of them a whole 2 oz, all on red maggot and one tiny Perch which fell to a worm tail.

Almost had the place to myself bar one chap after carp - Sunday was his 4th visit that week without a single bite - that's what I call perseverance!

Had a few jobs to do this morning and then went off to fish the River Vienne at Aixe-sur-Vienne. It was a bit grey and cool with rain forecast in the afternoon.

Arrived just as the church bells were ringing the midday peal and settled down into one of the few swims that is not at the top of a five foot wall. The downside is that it is impossible to get any rod rest into the ground as the thin layer of sand is over cobbles and cement. I have converted a photographic tripod into a rod pod and this was the first time I'd used it. Once it is tweaked a bit it will allow two rods to be securely supported at any angle on any surface or incline.

And because the footprint is so large and the centre of gravity low I should find difficulty in knocking it over.

Fished from the start with a medium feeder, 35g on a 2oz quiver tip using sweetcorn on the hook hoping for a barbel or two. The place is usually good for barbel, chub and carp and there was a bit of surface activity when I got there. This coincided with a hatch of light olives that lasted about an hour. I had nothing to show after forty minutes so switched to a smaller feeder 20g, fished a bit closer in and put a small cube of luncheon meat on a Quick Stop hook rig. Instant drop back bite....

But that was that. Nothing else troubled the scorer and around three the rain arrived along with a cold northerly wind so I threw everything into the van and had a drive down the Vienne valley to look up some of the places mentioned in the French fishing forum site.

That's a very nice photographic tripod conversion, what a great idea.

Nice report.

I’ve really enjoyed today on one of my favourite stillwaters which is a natural lake that’s literally five minutes down the road, the intention was to fish for silvers on light waggler gear and it pretty much went to plan…

Given the low overnight temperature I overlooked the usual line about half way down a gentle slope and instead went another rod length out to get to the deeper water, nothing fancy with the rig which was a simple 2AAA straight peacock waggler with bulked shot around the float and three number 10 droppers over the last third on 3.2lb main and 1.7lb bottom to a B911 size sixteen hook set six inches over depth.

I kicked off with three walnut sized balls of Sensas Roach and then began catapulting a pinch of maggots in every chuck or every two minutes and the small roach were soon taking it on the drop, I was hampered once the wind got up and had to lighten the bulk shot and change the droppers to no.6’s to counteract the tow which affected the presentation a little but the bites continued and it was nothing more complicated than keeping a steady feeding rhythm going of maggots over the top with a small ball of light groundbait when I felt the bites were ebbing off which maintained a nice stream of fish.

Nothing big but plenty of them and in good nick too…

Even managed a handful of these little fellas who are always nice to see in my book…

By early afternoon the dappled reflections of the bare far bank tree branches made it all but impossible to pick out the float whichever coloured tip I tried so I decided to plumb up right off the rod end and fish dibber style with a 3 x no.4 canal waggler just to see how things went…

I actually managed a very good couple of hours all things considered with some not unreasonable roach and perch from just two feet of nicely coloured water...

Finished on seventy fish which was comprised of fifty two roach, eight perch, five gudgeon, four netter skimmers and a small hybrid.

That’s me done until Saturday when it looks like being a brolly job but nice and mild with it, I reckon I can rest easy with that thought…

I went to my club lake for a few short hours today, a nice break from a badly weeded garden, the lake is very close to a tiny nottinghamshire river and has a barbel swim with overhanging willows that caught any weed and other bits of detritus coming downstream which created the perfect raft swim where barbel always frequented, a cert swim that gave me a bonus fish at times on my way home from the Trent.
A little angling treasure that was angling text book at its best, sadly, no more.
While fishing the lake the chainsaw crew arrived and cut the whole lot down and dragged them into the adjoining field where they were shredded and taken away, I was lost for words, god knows where the Barbel went but they wont be hanging about in the immediate area thats for sure.
A hole with a "Mr otter lives here" sign outside would have a preservation order on those trees for eternity and sod the nearby houses if any flooding occurs.
I ended the day with nine small carp.

That is sad Flight' Similar thing on the Dearne. Cracking swim, a small lip formed waterfall with a willow spreading over half the river. I laid on the grass at the top of the bank and flicked a fly, usually a Woolly ****** or Clouser into the waterfall. I had chub to over 4lb, trout and perch of two and a quarter then some numpty cut the tree down to make the fishing easier. Never produced again for me.

A less uplifting report than usual. Always sad to see that happen. Worse than returning in june to be staggered that the EA have turned your favourite chub bend into a canal. Bitter personal experience of that.
I fished a club lake again this evening for very scant reward. Some better fish were topping after dark tho. I'm so confident next time I might even take a landing net out!

Went to a large deep farm res today run by a club mostly interested in running matches there. I fancied a nice easy day in the sunshine under the steep bank out of the cold wind. It was very spring like. I wagglered only a rod length out for 3 goodly roach, one bream, 2 mirrors, small perch and 4 f1s they stocked for the matches. Sometimes its nice to have an easy day just catching what swims by.
