I really like using traditional tackle in a traditional way, a simple running 1/2ozs Ardsley bomb with worm and maggot on the hook.

Not a big Carp, but one I had to wait for all day while I fed the Robins.

Frost in the morning, nice warm day, interspersed with hail storm and rain ?

I have just read the excellent Binka post above and I can't help thinking that if budding young fishermen read this, and many of the other posts on this Thread, how much knowledge they could gain via this proper 'hands on' fishing....(who knows, perhaps they do....)
Reading Binka's two opening paragraphs, I could easily be accused of plagiarism as this report, which apart from minor details, is virtually identical, well identical until we include the fish count.....
Anyway, my outings for the first three days of this week also centered around a small still water where I tried a number of swims of varying depths. I also went for a light waggler set up, with red/white maggots the primary bait. For the most part I used an 18 via 1,5lb bottoms although I did drop to a 20 Drennan maggot hook when things got tough.
I varied the consistency of my minimal Van den Eynde light ground bait mixture from very wet to quite firm for the deeper swims.
In the main I caught fish very much of the 'Binka' stamp, but still suffered this 'roach x a few', followed by 'small perch x a few' so I was never sure of fish type with any form of bite, regardless of depth, be it up in the water or flat on the bottom, or indeed how many maggots where on the hook !

Being a 'busy' angler (sometimes a failing!) and with the sun on the water as the morning(s) wore on, I decided to give hemp a go, purely out of interest to see if the roach would respond in the first place and in the second to fool the perch. Initially I didn't bother changing the end tackle and after only 10 minutes landed a pretty 9" roach, followed by another a little smaller.
Unfortunately, after this the fish started to annoy me with unhittable 'speed bites' ( most of which I missed ) so I changed to a float with a longish antenna and shotted to show most of the antenna (2") above the water. Not ideal under most circumstances, but fishing very close in, in benign conditions, it can give what I call ' above the water ' bites, where the antenna (seemingly) drops a lot slower to a bite, (again, seemingly) with the strike being made before it reaches the surface.
Probably sounds a little bizarre ,BUT it certainly had the desired affect and I caught a steady stream of average roach, until that is, a charming little cross wind caused the antenna to wave around.................I dotted down with the same float but eventually the bites petered out..........

Overall, three good days in variable conditions with some great fun fishing with the promise of some better roach with hemp (and tares, once cooked !) over the coming weeks. Bread will also come into it's own again and I'm thankful for that !

Pleased to say I didn't venture out today, which is just as well as it's absolutely peeing down in south Bucks but tomorrow and Sunday look promising...........................

ps To show I don't spend all my life fishing the wife and I are of to see some form of exhibition at the RIBA building in London on Saturday which will include lunch (at a reasonably priced) restaurant. It goes without saying I shall be home in good time for tackle prep and thoughts about the following day, not to mention an early night to be fresh for a 6am start.............................

The Splitcane and the rod was made by a friend of mine, I have a number of his rods and they are simply superb.

Even better when they are made by a friend.

Another tricky couple of hours in the swim I keep going back to. Got a little more action this time with roach bigger than the 'blades' I was catching, or mostly missing. Down to a .05 h/l and a 22 with single dead red and battling into a fierce wind with a whip. Had to drag a chain of no. 11 stotz to keep bait still which I could manage about 1 in 5 casts. Just on dark fish topping and rolling and I end up with my first crucian weighing 1lb 15ozs. A couple more smaller companions before the wind drove me off the bank.

Well what a day that turned out to be, rough is not the word!

Just another maggot and silvers session really except a different lake and with a couple of nice fish thrown in for good measure, started the day on a 2 AAA waggler and finished it on a 3 SSG drift beater which was still getting swamped by the swell and occasional white horses brought about by the insane crosswind.

Pleased I persevered with the float though and felt like I had met the challenge today, not quite up to the numbers of the previous session but not that far off either and the only real problem I had was repeatedly mashed maggots after working up to the heavy drift beater without seeing the bite so I shallowed up a little which went some way to helping but I ended up on a large hook and big dendra nailed to the deck in the hope that it would be a bit more of a robust bait that would offer a more positive indication and it worked which enabled me to keep catching when the wind was at its peak…

Anyone for a quick “before and after”…

Roll on next week :)

Unusual for me these days but I fished a match on a commy today. I've been there a few times before and I like it...A central island @13m and around 5ft deep generally. The wind was howling straight down the middle. It was impossible to present a bait @11m. My 13m rig didn't even get wet... Started a new line on top2+2 which as the wind strengthened I was forced to abandon too....ended up fishing my topkit off the end of my net...
Had 3 carps, some lovely Ide around a pound, and a barbel for 15lb and 9th overall.... Most on single caster on a 22 hook to 2lb trace....
Winner 42lb.
Back ups 40.. and 37...
13 fished...

Having looked at the forecast for this week end at the start of the week, I'd mentally written off getting out, but by Friday morning, the outlook for yesterday afternoon didn't look too shoddy so I thought I'd see if I could grab a little early season Tinca action at Carr Side Farm, Ince Blundell. I put a feeder out, starting on corn and opted for double maggot on the waggler about 30' out.

Just got myself settled and the rain started :( I hadn't brought my brolly, primarily because I'd made the school boy error of trusting BBC weather... again :eek:mg:. In truth, a brolly would have been impractical in the swim I was fishing anyway, so I just covered up as much gear as I could, put my hood up & soldiered on until it passed.

Finally started getting some bites on the waggler but they were very fast & hard to hit fishing 6'' over depth so I shallowed up a little & started to connect with some small roach & the occasional small perch. Still nothing on the feeder so I switched to meat. Still nothing so I switched to worm - still nothing. In the mean time a had taken a couple of better roach on the drop, nothing huge, say 9 - 10'', but scale perfect with vibrant red-orange fins.

A combination of impending darkness & another shower led me to the conclusion that it was home time. No sign of any tench, but I was happy enough with roach & perch on the waggler. As for the feeder... must try harder - not a single touch all afternoon.

No fishing this weekend- working party down the river this morning.
Fifteen of us split into 3 groups, replacing and rebuilding some platforms where the boards were beginning to rot and making a start on cutting up the last couple of the big trees which came down in the storms a year and a bit ago so that we can get back to using the original path and finally get access to pegs 7 8 and 9 again.
One more working party here before June 16 and at least as much again to be done but luckily we have four or five guys who are prepared to do a bit extra midweek, one of whom is our main man with the chainsaw.
As always, river looked in perfect nick when you can't fish it ...

I haven't managed to get out much due to work recently, so
I thought I'd have one last bash with the heavy lure rod before it's put to rest for a couple of months.

8am saw me on a local stillwater.

5-6 casts in each likely looking swim.

8.30 saw a little jack come to the net - brilliant watching it follow and hit the lure in the clear water.

I fished on for an hour and managed to lose 3 lures in the process:eek:mg:

I fished the first two days this week in high winds and squally showers at a local lake, but being surrounded by woodland it was fairly easy to find a sheltered spot. Not where I would have chosen to fish, so it held my interest as to what I might catch.
Monday started slowly but with constant changes to depth I managed to locate some roach of variable size but one or two were over the 3/4lb mark. Most were taking maggot of differing numbers and colour, but when friend caught a roach on hemp I changed immediately, hoping for better fish.
Toward 10.30 I decide on a change of bait, and decided to give plain 2mm expanders a try. I caught roach from the off and didn't expect anything else, so I was absolutely staggered to hook a very good fish and shattered to lose it within a few seconds without knowing what it was. A recast saw the float slide away and I hooked a solid, hard pulling fish which really caught me by surprise. I held it more than fought it until it gave up, and I could slide a beautiful crucian of some 2lbs into the net. I was really chuffed with it's quality and over the moon to take a quick picture before putting it back.

The next two fish were 6" roach so I changed to double white maggot. Away went the float again and another crucian was landed, this one around 11/2lb. Two crucians in March - I couldn't believe it, and from a water where they are scarce even in the warmer months.

Tuesday was a bit of an anti climax as I obviously expected to find more of the same, but it wasn't to be although I was content with some very nice roach on hemp and single red maggot to a 20 hook. Unsurprisingly, I couldn't catch a fish on red maggot the day before !!

Two lovely days which will live long in my memory, obviously for the surprise fish, but more that fishing never ceases to surprise and amaze me..............................

Out again a 6am tomorrow and conditions look to be just perfect......

I fished a thursday match today at Tunnel Barn Farm,we were on Canal pool,i drew peg 11..I started the match on 10mm punch dobbing at 13m,then switched to maggot on top 2,then finished on bread again,at 13m,to take 10 mirrors,12 F1,s,barbel,skimmers,ide,roach,for 68-0-0,which was enough for the win,i did lose 6 mirrors as well,3 at the net:rolleyes:,Alan(Gibbo) Gibb, was 2nd from peg 3,with 43-8-0,and Bad H made the frame with 43-4-0,a cracking day ,both fishing wise and weather wise,as a bonus i was paired with Zac from Daventry, who weighed 16-8-0,so we won the pairs as well:D...My rigs for across were white hydro,0.13m/l,0.10h/l,16 tubertini 808......and the top kit rig was pink hydro, same m/l and h/l,but an 18 808,Cheers,all the best,Gazza

Finished work early so headed to a club lake in Arlesey (apparently some bloke called **** Walker used to fish in the same town).

My method of attack was a feeder rod and a pint of red maggots to kill a few hours. I picked the far bank, on the side of the lake where it was shallower. After 10 minutes or so I was catching roach regularly. Midway through the session the rod tip went round as usual and a heavier weight was immidiately apparent. As I got in I saw the white belly first, and then realised it was a perch, add a big one at that (by my standards!). I netted it, weighed it and it came to 1lb 9oz. A new PB!!! :):)

Please excuse the horrendous excuse of a moustache, I'm not trying to grow it, just been lazy and haven't shaved it.

1.30-3pm today saw me at the same lake.

This time with the ultralight setup after a perch.

I completed one circuit fishing a 1.5" crayfish on a 2g jighead, twitched along the bottom.

That had no result at all so I decided to fish for a short while with a 3" shad, texas rigged.

Yesterdays jack followed it, in the same spot but was unimpressed.

Lovely afternoon.

Took a young lad (17) fishing today to a day ticket lake in rural Beds...
We both fished the pole in approx 10ft depth, me short (8m) and him long (13m), maggot over Groundbait..with £1 at stake to make it interesting...
To cut a long story short he battered me taking 10lb+ of skimmers and roach..
I reckon I fished too short for this time of year..

Well he is sponsored and won junior fisho 2013:wh

That's my excuse anyway......

I popped out to my Syndi water this morning, got there at 08:00 and walked round the water looking for the right spot... The water level was way up on a couple of weeks ago.... maybe about 3 feet I set up a zig on one rod at about half depth (tis very deep 20' plus) casting a10' zig on a 9' rod isn't easy if you forgot the sub-controllers to fish it adjustable... ho-hum.... still, out it went into the deep, the sun was out so I was hopeful the other rod was dropped onto the near shelf with a 14mm Cell pop-up on a combi-link about 20 yards out...

There is an island in the middle of the water but the bottom is 'V' shaped with the banks sloping down from the island and up to the outer banks
Here's a shot of the island with me Dwarfs on their sticks

As the morning progressed the liners started and I moved the baits in closer by a foot or three every half an hour or so, then at quarter to three I had a belting run and lifted into a fish that decided the island looked an attractive proposition.... I had to let it run or I'd have had a hook pull.... it stopped short and turned and I got some line back and we began to duke it out.... what a scrapper of a fish it fought every inch of the way and I was loving every second of it.... it finally rolled into the waiting net and I got it onto the mat... a stunning plump common, the scales told their story.... 17lb 10oz

Sorry for the 'Mat Shot' but I have no self take options...

I slipped it back and it waddled off with an undignified flash of the tail.
I rebaited and dropped in again and was in an optomistic frame of mind... this water is hard at times but the fish are stunners and well worth the wait... Sadly that was the lot for the day, even the Zig was ignored at 5pm I packed up and tottered off home for dinner...

Tight lines

Quiet time for me at the moment fishing wise. I've taken advantage of now having a van for my work by taking some fishing tackle with me and trying various places along the rivers I cross on my way around the area. It is easy to chuck a 12 foot quiver rod, made up ready for a ledger or feeder and hook length, couple of rod rests and a landing net handle in a quiver and an Aldi day bag. Bait has been stuff I've got left over in the freezer, ranging from Spam to sweetcorn and some home made paste.

Most of the time however I've been using a plummet to locate deeper holes, seams and the like. Once I've found a likely swim I'll pop a bit of bait on and see what occurs. Over here if you have a rod licence you can fish just about any river and there is nothing stopping you from walking over a field to get to some fishing. Well, nothing except cattle

So far I've been forty kilometers down the Vienne valley and caught a nice chub, forty kilometers up the Vienne valley and caught a few small chub and spent a couple of hours yesterday afternoon on the River Gartempe which reminded me of the Swale at Sheephills. It is a tributary of the Vienne, but a large river in its own right and hosts a salmon run.

I settled in to a stretch downstream of a Gothic bridge that dates back almost a thousand years, although it looks like the second arch has been modified. Probably in the 17th century when the river became more important for navigation. Just as a mater of interest the body of Richard I would have passed under that bridge on his way downstream from Chalus to his burial place at Fontevraud Abbey.

I found a lovely swim, barely if ever fished, about a metre deep with a large overhanging willow that had its own weed raft.

I gave it about two hours or a little more using Spam with and without sweetcorn, sweetcorn on its own, pellet and some maize & hemp paste. Not a twitch.

Looking at that photo I'm beginning to think that I would be better suited fishing the Charente river system as that area is a good two to three weeks further on than up in the Haute (High) Vienne. Even down where I live there is blossom and leaves on the trees whereas it is still a bit bleak up there as you can see. Problem is, all my jobs are up here at the moment.
