A murmuration of starlings Pete. I remember learning some odd collective nouns like that and an exhaltation of larks. The wonders of the English language.

One group is a jury I think but cannot remember which.

Having stood directly underneath a murmuration I’d call it an umbrella of starlings.:eek:mg:

I went yesterday to the deep lake fished for 2 hours before i had a bite,i foulhooked a good carp which i lost,15 minutes later i hooked another, again foulhooked, again lost through the hooks pulling, then i had a roach,i caught twenty of those before the swim went quiet, the float buried and i was away again,no carp this,a bloody great catfish which i had on for 20/30 minutes, running sixty yards to my right before coming back past me and going a further thirty yards to the left before snagging me,forcing me to pull for a break, which i found really difficult to achieve, even after pointing the rod and winding down to it and walking backwards eight yards,i was on a 4.6lb silstar matchteam hooklength,it was that that broke about 3in up from the hook. Ended up with 25 roach and 2 small perch, biggest fish around 10ozs...

It's been a tricky period levels wise on the Severn as I like to float fish for perch . I had a call from my mate yesterday and met up below Shrewsbury this morning . A bit much water on but we had a plan :). Fished a big slack just down the edge , good start after half an hour first of the day a perch 3.5 . Missed bites bumped fish but managed a few more perch 2.5 , 1.5, 2.7,1.12 and finally another at 3.5 , well chuffed IMG_0283.JPG

Such a great session- and some smashing photos-I’d love a perch like that!

Really well done!

Not sure about patiently;) , it's been a hard this season with floods on and off from the start of the season . Luckily we got a chance yesterday and picked the right spot .

It wasn't Mark to be fair they are all along the Severn , just that not that many people target them . I've given up my Lymm card as PAAS has so much of the Severn I just didn't really use it , only really fished the canal at Grindley brook

Last night’s weather forecast for today and the rest of the week made for grim viewing, a fishless week I was thinking to myself.

So to wake up to blues skies and sunshine came as a pleasant surprise but dark clouds were looming on the horizon and I was half tempted to take a chance. The phone rang and it was Mike who kindly gave me some info on rods (he has a few):). After the call my mind was made up, grabbed rod, net and bag with nothing more than a few slices of bread and headed off to my regular haunt at Fordwich.

I make a point of letting my better half know exactly where I’m going, just incase, you never know. She asked why I keep returning to the same bit of river, isn’t it boring?. Today’s short session proved exactly why it’s not got boring......so far.

I could see and sense bad weather arriving arriving as the wind was getting up and I was pleased with myself for changing from a pin to a closed face reel. No tangles but no bites either in the first twenty minutes. I was reeling my tiny piece of punched bread back in for the umpteenth time when a pike snatched it, I only had 2lb line on and was having a right old tussle which lasted a few minutes before my line was bitten through, so this is why I wasn’t getting any bites I thought to myself and was half tempted to call it a day as a strong gust nearly deposited me in the drink.

But you got to have a last cast haven’t you? Glad I did as the float dipped with a decent amount of resistance on the strike and I though I was into a chub but as it got closer I knew I had a half decent roach on and prayed that pike had disappeared. In the net and what a little beauty, fin and scale perfect.

This meant a few more last casts and another positive bite, this time the fish leaping out the water, for a split second I thought that pike had returned but could soon see it wasn’t the case and I had caught my first ever trout.

Whatever it weighed it was a pb, I was happy as Larry and with that the rain started coming down and time to make a dash for the car.

This piece of river should have something similar to the daily menu board that is displayed over the road in the local pub, what fish is biting today. Four trips in the past week, first day nearly all dace, second day chub, then a blank and now today what I’ve been targeting, a fine roach with the bonus of the trout. Won’t get bored with this for a while yet.

Sounds like a cracking bit of water, Mr 63.
I love places where you get a good variety of species.

It is, and I appear to have it all to myself! It’s the fly section of river on my club ticket and for an extra £20 it can be coarse fished between November and March but few if any seem to take up this option, suits me.:)
