Today was my only chance to go fishing this week, decided to make a start on my project of catching from every park lake in Liverpool. After dropping my big lad off at school, I headed for Greenbank Park. The rain was relentless, but the forecast was for it to brighten up. The forecast was wrong. Long story short - I blanked whilst sitting through freezing rain with only waterfowl for company.

I tried frugally feeding maggots with two on a 16 barbless hook. Had a crack with bread then sweetcorn. Not one bite. Not one sign of fish. Still, I'm starting night shifts tonight, it was a trip that had to be made.

Greenbank Park used to be a lovely water for tench and early morning summer sessions on the pole used to produce some great nets. There was always a big carp of 20+ in there that used to wipe everyone out. This was before the parks were invaded by the tent boys in either camo or light grey hoodies.

I've never fished Greenbank before, heard there's been some nice sized perch come out.
The tent boy invasion is the reason I want to visit and catch from all the parks; they seem to becoming purely carp waters and I want to rekindle some nice memories from when I was a young lad before it's too late. Walton Hall big lake was always my first choice as a kid, still has a nice mixed bag of fish.
Have a surreal memory of a dawn trench raid on Princess Park as a school kid in 1981, our neighbour took me and his kid just as the Toxteth riots were kicking off!
I'm returning to Greenbank to try and break my duck after night shifts end.

No bites on paste and just one on maggot, the dace above...

Club fixture today on a day ticket lake (Wood lane back) not my cup of tea but I felt I should support the club. Thought I’d keep it simple so set up pole at 7m, no13 hollow elastic with a 16 hook to 3lb8 bottom beneath a light float. Double maggot on the hook. Kept pinging maggots into 3 spots, 10oclock, 12 and 2. Same depth in all 3 places.
It wasn’t long before the float buried and the lift was met with solid resistance..5 minutes later I landed this mirror...

Good start around 8lb..

Next bite and a proper one this time, 13lb...

I kept the maggots going in on a regular basis and landed 6 more of them including this rather handsome common...

Weighed in 73lb:3oz for top spot which surprised me. 63lb was 2nd...
£90 better off tonight...
Happy days..

20 fished...

Down south for a few days and first time out in a while- booked in for club match on the Colne at Uxbridge- had been going to be on the old free stretch but demolition works meant the car park would be closed so moved (thankfully given how the lower bit fishes with extra water on) to the Island stretch.
River well up, coloured and hammering through which together with this mornings heavy frost put a few regulars off so only 12 or 13 of us. Split between backstream and main river, as always virtually two different matches, bits on the former, sit it out for lumps on the latter. Good chance of lumps today with the height, pace and colour and roach and dace weights likely to be down for the same reasons.
Drew 52, one of the favourite backstream swims so happy with that. Got there to find a slack behind the pennywort across but the rest running too fast for comfort and the crease such as it was boiling up quite a bit. Looking down the peg, slack bit not in shot
IMG_1328.jpg
About 2 ft 6 in the slack, about the same or a bit deeper down the swim and a deeper run straight in front about halfway across shallowing up a few yards down. Set up 5 no 4 stick, straight bomb and two pole rigs, light for across and a 4gm lollipop to hold in the deeper run. Started on stick with maggot, two dace first two runs down the crease but then nothing for fifteen minutes. Over into slack with pole, a couple of small roach and perch straight away then gone. Poked pole to bottom end of slack , two more roach, gone again. Picked up stick , ran it through down the swim, nothing, likewise with lollipop in front so becoming clear they didn't seem to want to be in the flow, Back on pole in slack and down crease and a few more fish but they just wouldn't settle anywhere, probably down to the variable flow and didn't seem to be reacting to the feed at all, just random bites here and there. Still, 12 fish in first hour, kept chopping and changing between methods and 21 after two but getting harder all the time. Sun now right in eyes so time for the bomb, couple of fish on it but missed more than I hit so back onto pole. Middle of match just picking off odd fish but still putting weight in the net and couldn't get more than three anywhere before had to change lines. Fifth hour a struggle but finally had a few fish, all dace , right down the swim but bumped one and they disappeared. Last hour as expected improved a bit as the light dropped but knew I hadn't done enough as Hon Sec who was on a sit it out swim had a 9 lb barbel to go with an earlier chub.
Ended up with 46 fish, reckoned had about 5 lb so thought it was going to be tight between me and Brian on the next peg above me when he weighed 5-3. I was always a rotten estimator, 6-15
IMG_1329.jpg
which was enough to get me second after Don's 13-12, Brian's 5-3 was third followed by a few 4s, better overall than we expected at the draw.
Odd day really, had to work hard to keep putting fish in the net but hard to see anything that made a difference other than to keep changing lines, one of those strange days when couldn't work out what if any effect the feeding was having. Still, very enjoyable...

The desire to get out after finishing my night shifts proved too much. I only had a couple of hours, despite stating that I was giving up my attempts at drop shotting, I foolishly chose to have another bash. The temptation of travelling light and being mobile on the chilly canal bank proved too much.

Perchy looking spot after perchy looking spot were explored, all to no avail. My second blank on the trot.

On the bright side, it was nice to wander the canal after 13 night shifts this month. Still, was quite tempted to launch the drop shot rod into the middle of the cut!

Don’t give up, drop shotting does produce blanks, I should know! But when they’re biting it’s great fun.

I fished a match today, a match of two, myself pitted against the cold weather and remarkably I won, as I’ve got older I hate the cold but the desire to fish can sometimes override the fear of freezing your nuts off.

It was just a two hour affair in between domestic duties and I was on my regular stretch of river with a few maggots and some bread. After an hour of trotting without a bite I was losing enthusiam and was considering packing up when a tangle meant a complete re rig, but I stuck to it, quite proud of myself threading and tying 2lb line and size 20 hooks.

It was worth the effort as the float eventually dipped and a nice chub was brought to the net. Less than half an hour left, no more chub but a few small dace and roach. I could have stayed on if it wasn’t for duties I wasn’t feeling the cold at all, makes all the difference when there isn’t the slightest breeze, only started feeling the cold walking back to the car. The journey home had me gazing skywards with some unusual cloud formations due no doubt to this very high pressure. I’ll be back tomorrow hopefully.

Lovely day but very difficult conditions. The river was still some way over its banks and running fast. All sorts of flotsam and jetsam in the water. Managed not to get snapped up, but very little interest from the fish. Had a little Wren at my feet busily pecking through the ground where the water had receded and seemed to be finding lots of tasty morsels. No other anglers out, but plenty of dog walkers. They were fortunately on the other bank though. Will wait for a milder more cloudy day and try again soon. I was restricted for swims by safety reasons, not taking any risks on soft banks etc. One swim I normally like to fish was in the middle of the river!

Cheers Ian, that looks appealing actually, your kind of working for your fish instead of just sitting and waiting like some styles of fishing,

Only problem I can see in on the odd occasion it attracts a pike, I've never caught a pike and dont fancy trying to unhook 1, I like my fingers lol,

Pike can be a problem but they are usually lip hooked . More of a problem is stopping buying the bloody lures , that's contagious

I can't fish for the next two days, so I had to make the most of today. As I had the shortened rod to try, I had to give the beck its first go in a couple of years. I don't fish it often as It's fly only for much of the year. However, I think I managed to miss it out completely last winter. A couple of years back I'd had some decent grayling for the area. The best of them going an agonising 1lb 15oz, the best I've had locally for decades.

The water level was a touch lower than is ideal, it was also a little clearer than I'd like. It was notable that there was plenty of streamer weed left from summer. At about 2 feet deep in the deeper spots and very short runs being standard, you can often see fish. Over a good 500 yards of the stretch there are probably three decent spots to fish. Worryingly, after working my way downstream, and giving each of the bankers a go, I'd not had a touch. I'd also seen no obvious sign of fish being present. In desperation, I started giving short runs I'd normally ignore a go.

It wasn't until I worked my way back to the first two banker swims that I got a touch. As the sun started to dip behind the valley tops, and the temperature started dropping rapidly, I had four six inch grayling. Hardly a big test for the rod, but a lot better than blanking. I've got a feeling that the big girls of a couple of years back may have shuffled off this mortal coil. At least there appears to be a year class to follow on.

Let me guess you have hundreds of lures but always use the same 2 or 3 ? LoL

As for the weights, lead or tungsten and what sort of weight should the weight be grams etc
