How did you get on?

I was perilously close to not having a story this weekend, not because the fishing was poor but because I’m without transport at the moment.

I was going to risk a session yesterday if the car held out but a buyer turned up Thursday evening with cash on the hip and I decided to make hay whilst the sun shone, luckily me old mucka came to the rescue by standing my turn at the driving and picked me up this morning for a nice session on a local farm pond.

I was just glad to be out in all fairness and nothing really out of the ordinary, I watched as he caught carp from under the far bank on the method whilst I caught perch, roach, rudd, skimmers and ide from right under the rod tip on the dibber and worm whilst only encountering one rat fish which caught me a bit unawares before snagging me up and leaving me retrieving a piece of decaying tree branch instead...

By the way the line from tip to float is so taught because I took my hand off the rod butt to take the pic which in turn took the weight off and caused it to rise, I like to leave some slack to avoid resistance and keep the rod well above the float to avoid tip slap when striking and to help avoid the whole shallow rig flying out and landing in a mess after a missed bite.

The perch were all small but still of varying sizes…

No shortage of these which surprised me and no apologies either after the disappointment of not getting out the previous day, it was a case of all things very gratefully received…

A very relaxing day all in all and a much needed one with plenty of evidence of a successful spring for Mother Nature…

Not sure when I’m out next as it depends on when the new car arrives, hopefully I will be rubbing that newness off it and snapping things again by mid to late week :)

I completely understand Jerry, I've been on a low ebb with one thing and another these last few days and it was a moment of weakness on my part... Sheer madness even but I thought the reference to "rat fish" might just have swung it back in my favour :D

It was a return to the tip off tench water today, been keeping an eye on it and prebaiting a bit, there are the beginings of evidence that fish actually live in this water and by hook and crook and judicious manipulation I managed a couple of hours this evening. Tried a diferernt method, 1.25 avon with feeder [and shock horror a swingtip] which actualy resulted in not only a bite but a beautiful spankingly conditioned male tench of 3lb or so.

My plastic casters on a hair certainly deterred the roach. Unfortunately they also deterred the tench!
What did work though were one of those hollow plastic sweetcorn on a hair with an 8mm hard pellet jammed in it.

Another spectacular blank for me. The Test looked like it was heading for a draw so I scuttled off down the lake to try to winkle a tench or two out. Unfortunately a lot of people thought likewise and the place was mobbed out. Geese behaving but the coots as usual were fighting anything and any body for no earthly reason I could see.the parakeet were no quieter than last week either.

There really is a dearth of waters my way for those (like me) that don't want to catch carp....be they commie sized or big lumps. Im begnning to realise that I'm going to have to travel further.

Should have stuck with the cricket as it turned out. Not only a biteless blaxnk but no milk for me tea either and I had to drink it black. Bleah !

I took my Mrs fishing with me today, "to give her a laugh", whilst watching me have a go at fly fishing lol. Now i'm no fly fisherman and I found casting a 5wt line into a strong wind with a 7wt rod quite problematic, infact it was messy to say the least :cheesy grin: . I'd gone with the intentions of catching some trout which I did  but I caught more chub than trout ! At least casting a fly allowed me to get on the river instead of sitting by a still water targetting sluggs. Closed season for chub I know but I can't help it if they like me fly's...

Managed to grab another couple of hours on the tip off water last eve and expectation was high, worst possible start with an instant bite and a small fish of some description escaping after a few seconds, after exhausting the roll a fag to get a bite tactic I phoned the missus to bring me a flask of tea to try the pouring tea bite enhancing method which also failed.
This water has really got me by the nadgers and I cant wait to get back.

I've no idea about fly reels trotter but that ones called a daiwa lochmore, it says so on the side so that's how I know lol. A friend of mine gave it to me and another friend gave me the rod years ago. I'm no fly fisherman but it was one way of getting me back on running water :).

Where waters meet
I went fishing from 3pm til 5 today, after a Perch.

Very busy due to being half term and it was lucky I was in a good mood :p

Started fishing by the waterski jetty - ' Don't fish there' said an obese gentleman in a wetsuit, sitting on the verranda of the waterski club headquarters. (a small brick affair, built on the side of the public conveniences)

'Why not?'

'Because the skiboats about to go off'

'Well its not going yet is it?' - Cast, and carry on fishing.

Further round I hooked a jack and instantly was surrounded by about ten over excited children and their mothers.

'Its dead!' ' Look at its eye' 'Can you eat it' blah blah blah

I allowed them:rolleyes: to watch me safely release it, and explained that it needed a rest before going. Held it in the water by tail and belly, and knew what was coming next:D

A nice little soaking for the spectators was my and the pike's 'goodbye':D

I also did a Fly session around 3-4 weeks ago and caught more chub than Trout. The trout was around a pound, the 4 chub however were all around 2lb mark. I wasn't complaining :D

denzinho.....This is purely a hypothetical question, and NOT an issue, but could someone fly fish say, a river like the Kennet under the auspices of catching trout but all the time actually fishing for chub, as long as the river contains both species ?? Maybe one needs s different licence...

Probably look it up but as you are catching both I thought I would ask....

It's just I have some old fly fishing rods gathering dust in the loft .............................( smilie here ! )

Your 27 quid coarse licence is actually for coarse fish and none migratory trout. You can legitimately target trout on a mixed river fishery. In some regions you can even fish a worm for trout (even trotted under a float) perfectly legally. This is precisely why it's largely impossible to be sure that someone is fishing illegally on the Yorkshire rivers unless you get close enough to see the dodgy pint of maggots.

After a week in France trying to sort out family stuff, today was my first dangle back at home. Neil1970 and I went light with lures a spinners down to our local pit. After trying a few swims we arrived at the banker swim which had produced some jacks and perch. Neil managed to hook 2jacks, but both fell off.
I had one follow in from a 6" perch which nipped at my lure..

It was really refreshing to spend a few hours in warm sunshine with no pressure
to catch, having a great laugh too, listening to some old Derek and Clive stuff on you tube......
Happy days.....

This is correct, I asked the EA about fishing worm for trout and they said it was allowed on my local small River. They did say however that if I continue to catch course species using the method then they advised to go back on the fly for Fish welfare.

The Chub incident was a one off, I visibly saw a shoal and targeted them using pheasant tail nymphs which they took...over and over again. They didn't spook at all which is strange.

The fish were all unhooked quickly without pictures etc and released quickly. Part of me just wanted to see how they reacted to the fly and my actions were purely experimental.
