It's seems a case of search for perch whilst the pike go on strike.

Its 2:59 am in New Delhi. Unable to sleep as due to drive off at dawn to Pancheshwar for 7 days of spinning for Mahseer. But not happy. A Hardy Demon spinning rod I had ordered 2 months ago has arrived at my home in Bangladesh 12 hours after I flew for India. No fault of the shop I originally bought it from but a piece of mismanagement from the shippers I always use to get stuff out of the U.K. (Normally very reliable and to be used again. Difficult to explain to a non-fisher why you must have that one particular rod). A whole host of sundry items and lures which were highly recommended have also failed to make the trip, including a much required Shimano spinning reel.

Fortunately I had earlier received two Shimano Exage travel rods ( one reviewed on HDYGO recently) and a friend will appear with a Penn battle reel along with various lures so all is not lost.

I have brought along a Hardy Marksman 11 foot Smuggler Avon which the original blurb claimed could double as a light spinning rod! A few feeders found their way into my luggage as did a baitrunner reel! A step into the dark side may well be forced upon me. Although unlikely to be as dark as the recent ball tampering mess!

Hope to report on catches and mental health soon.

All the best

I wonder what the world record is for 'blanks'?

I managed to notch up another this morning betwixt the hours of 7am and noon, which included a decent soaking for three of those hours. My swim choice was restricted to where I could get the brolly up PDQ without sloshing around in the mud. All things considered I probably broke my own record (from car to sitting under said brolly) without breaking into a run!

I don't know how long it was raining overnight, but if the A4 going into Reading Berks was anything to go by I suspect most of the hours of darkness. Causing chaos akin to the recent snow in several places!!

Anyway, I gave it my best shot and in a strange way I enjoyed the experience - I didn't let the elements beat me, sort of thing.

I'm about to hang the washed the fishing gear which should be ready for another stint come Friday...(if I can wait that long!)

Good on you for having a go. Not for me, too much of a wimp. Can't wait to get out again though.

Bagging is so yesterday, got to thank a blank.

Yesterday. All my troubles.... By Saturday, I'd got a bit used to the eye-drops, and deluded myself I'd be able to see a float. The Old Lake was looking grey and chilly

md1.jpg

I worked my way back from 11m, trying to find the distance where I could see the tip of the float well enough to see shy bites. That turned out to be in my hand, and even then it wasn't entirely clear. But the bailiff had swooped on me already, and I had a £5 stake in it, as well as a wish to catch something, so I set up the shortest tip rod with the tip that moves furthest on a bite - a spring tip. Surely I'd be able to see that. I chucked a little cage feeder her and there, found that this side of the lake was full of last year's dead weed, and caught a few perch that were keen enough to dig the maggots out of it.

md15.jpg

After 2 hours, nobody was catching anything and I packed up.

Sunday was a beautiful day, and I was inspired to go and have a walk around a favourite tench lake. The owner had been applying just the right amount of pruning to the overgrown swims, and all the trees and bushes were still there, but with that bit more elbow room. He told me an angler had half a dozen the day before, so I'm looking forward to a first visit soon.

Monday, I'd been allowed to knock off the dilating drops, so I headed back to the Old Lake. Where better to put this distressingly unfishy spell behind me? At 11 am it all looked like a poster for spring

md13.jpg

And I found I could see ok at about 8m. I set everything up inch-perfect and waited for a bite. An hour later, I was still waiting, and the blue skies were replaced with cold drizzle and an easterly breeze. Bites were strictly occasional, although they were nice roach when you got one

md14.jpg

There were other cars on site, but nobody else on the large lake. Three blokes emerged with their gear who'd been on a lake further down the stream-fed chain. They stopped for the usual what have you had conversation. Then one sat down on the peg immediately to my left, the others to my right. You can't object, as we've all paid for a ticket, but ..... why? On an empty lake? Anyway, we scratched and scraped away for a few fish, and I put back a very modest catch for this water and left. It's probably my own fault for not knowing when to stay at home.

A very nice roach Kev! I always say a full handful of roach is a good roach! I say something similar in another context but let's not go there !:wh

I love blokes like that......the whole lake to choose from and they sit on the next peg. Or directly opposite right in your line of sight ( well maybe not yours atm Kev) which distracts you all day long.

Not sure which annoys me most actually. Probably the "line of sight" brigade unless they sit very still....which they rarely do.

It was grey and wet this morning but I felt the urge to get outdoors.
I set off for Tring to have a bash at the Wendover arm on the usually productive "gusher" peg.

image.jpeg

The canal was a strange olive green colour which didn't look too good to me. It wasn't.

Forgot my bread which usually does the trick here so it was magg and wagg, also tried flouro pinkies and caster.

Stayed just 2 hours, brolly up and had just one bite.

Blank avoided.....

Dont get me started on those ! I was nearly taken out permanently in Tescos this morning by somebody reversing a Yaris Hybrid into the space next to me. It was obviously in stealth mode because I couldn't hear a damn thing. That's not very pedestrian friendly.

Wasn't me guv honest, I am very careful in car parks when the car is running on the battery as they make next to no noise.

Weeding half done , no one outstanding jobs for a few days so on a whim went to a nearby pond, nothing of note but it's a pleasant enough place for the odd fish or two so--- at around one fifteen this afternoon my indicator jerked into life giving me a bream that may just have made about five lbs.
Nice to be out tho.

Beaver Fishery. Another day, another pike! Yes after blanking for most of the year so far, on the few excursions I have made to the water, I caught another pike without trying.

This fellow was fooled by a speeding method feeder on its way back to the bank. I was retrieving it when, all of a sudden, it stopped dead. I thought it was snagged but when it started to move under its own power I realised I had another pike in tow, or rather it had me. Again I landed it on a rig with no trace and had lip-hooked it perfectly (luck!).

After a change of lakes, I went on to catch a whole lot of F1s to make my day. At last I was catching something. The whole story (and lots more pictures) can be found HERE, for anyone who is interested. A really great day if not a little short, I could have stayed there longer but until the 1st April the gate closes at 18:00.

After last weeks declarable, I was delighted to be catching fish again. I can't wait to get out again - even if it is raining

Ralph.

I am truly amazed Ralph that a pike might go for a method feeder on the retrieve! Is this a eureka moment? Lovely fish though!;)
