Hi Nol.
That reply hardly seems credible. I check the tackle forums on several websites and have read complaints of poor spool tolerances (my own particular bugbear) grinding noises, wobbly spools and ratchet pawls falling off.
I have also read of reels being replaced. In many cases it's a no quibble service but that doesn't seem compatible with no complaints at all.
Hope the new bearings do the trick. If not save up for one of the Okuma Sheffield pins as proudly displayed by Mike. You won't regret it.
It looks the business on that rod Mike, I take it that is the Darent Valley avon? Happy trotting.

Nice rod tigger, what version is it?

I have the 11ft float

The top rod is a drennan acolyte, the bottom one (I think that's the one your asking about) is a 14ft Hardy Marksman specialist. I got the Hardy because (as well as liking the look of it) it's rated t 8lb mainline which is just a nice line rating for my angling.

You are right Ian! I have done the easy bit and bought the rod and reel which I am well capable of! Catching fabulous barbel like that is something else entirely and may be beyond me!:)

However I aim to try and have plenty of time to do so. I hope I am up to the challenge but Chub,Barbel and Grayling are my targets this year on the pin. God help me:rolleyes:

Ps the tackle was bought by my kids!

I had a play with the Aventa Pro, tbh I couldn't see any difference in ease of start up, build quality or smoothness to the Sheffield.
It's a top piece of kit, I'm not a tackle tart (I hope) but it is nice to know that one of the best pins on the market is in the bag.
Tight lines and all the best.

I've got a couple of the adventa pro's they are a nice reel for the price. I haven't used a Sheffield or any of there other pins but they all look like a variation on a theme.

I have received my formal invitation today Ian and have my compulsory meeting on the 18th February after which I can go fishing. I will ask why when you are invited to join you lose 6 weeks or so of the first fishing year which runs from Jan 1! Seems odd! Ah well only £220!

I have just acquired an Okuma Raw pin and very nice it is too.

The only negative is the ratchet control which is a knob on the back you have to turn, making it impossible to switch the ratchet on and off with your rod hand.
I am guessing this is common to all the Okuma models.

For it to be perfect for me, it needs to have a little lever, within reach of my forefinger, just like my old Speedia. I wonder why they haven't done this?

That's the only thing I don't like on my Sheffield; the knurled knob.
Like you I much prefer a well positioned lever which can be switched on and off with your finger.

Apart from that little niggle; I love my Sheffield.

If they dropped the £100 joing fee it may well be worth thinking about but that is just too much .

Yep I'm not a big fan of the knob on my adventa pro but it's a small niggle.

Glad to see others that prefer a well positioned lever. I keep on hearing that they aren't popular. However, I reckon that the real reason for knobs is economic. Levers cut a market share by making a reel handed. Left hookers don't like a right handed reel and manufacturers don't want to make specific left handed reels. Far easier and cheaper to make a backplate mounted knob that's useable but equally imperfect for either left or right handers.

My preferred ratchet on/off switch is a button type as seen on the old Allcocks Aerials (not match aerials) which where a simple up or down or you push then forward and down then a little backward pressure to release them. The Greys bewick has a straight up and down button. I'm not a lover of levers, I think i've got shut of all my reels with ratchet levers bar a couple of Youngs BJ's which are very nice reels.

These are buttons I like...
