Unfortunately it is a culture thing. My girlfriend is Slovenian, we visited her family their recently and whilst out one day I chatted to a guy who was after Pike on the river, when I asked whether he was fishing for sport or dinner he laughed and said, who fishes for sport..... Not thst I am in either party here, I don't particularly like seeing EE'S taking fish out of our waters, I just think it'd be hard for certain people to break their cultural habits regardless of country that they're in. That is the same with most cultural habits.

Ok southern London guardian reader posting yes I agree and in a perfect world this would not happen but my river lea has survived 300 years of pollution!!
Ok and by the way our police have enough to do what is more important a few fish or every beamer or merc driver on their phone breaking the law and risking injury sorry to racist honest I like the Germans!!

Most beamers and mercs have bluetooth hands free, it's those kids racing round in the clapped out 15 year old shopping cars who are the ones who are 'on their phone, breaking the law and risking injury'.

If any of you feel invaded, besieged raped (well, if your lucky and that way inclined) and pillaged by the influx of EE... could it be any worse than being "seen to by one of the leaders of a political party"?

I'll be honest and say i live a very sheltered life regarding angling, only fishing a few waters and have yet to experience EE members poaching.

My personal view is that, as others have said, education is the key. I'm sure, as in most walks of life, that there is a minority that will conscientiously break the law and in this case will illegally poach fish regardless of any effort to teach them otherwise. They are a lost cause.

There are others, I'm sure, that take fish for the pot instinctively, as they would from their homeland, naively if you like, and they see absolutely nothing wrong in that. Infact if you were to tell them that you had to put the fish back it may seem as bizarre as telling someone picking blackberries that in this country you have to throw them back in the bush.

What i would like to see is a campaign of posters and signs in tackle shops, where the offenders are perhaps purchasing equipment and bait, informing people of catch and release and the legal requirement for fishing licenses. I see no such information in the tackle shops i visit.

Wrong and not for the first time, if you care to look at when "theft of fishing rights" became a crime under the theft act you would ( if you knew how old I was when I was guesting on the estate ) see that "theft of fishing rights" was not part of the act. As usual you jump in with both feet without the facts.

So you are at least 100 years old are you? Because that how old you'd have to be not to be covered either by the Larceny Act (1916) or the Theft Act (1968) as both covered Theft of fishing Rights from their enactment. Arguably under the former the penalty when caught would have been more severe than it is today.
The offense is not a new one created in recently times, it has been on the statute book all that time. What is new is a rediscovery of the Schedule 5 offence by one of the legal eagles at ATr to assist clubs, water owners to deal effectively with Thieves who steal their fishing rights no matter who they are.

So yet again Crow you are WRONG and spouting **ss and wind to attempt to defend the indefensible theft of someone’s fishing rights.

I have decided to delete what's left of this post as what was left after moderation did not reflect my original point.

They often say ignorance is not a defense in Law although I don't always agree with it. I was once found guilty of a driving crime when I was a part time mini cab driver that only had become law a few months previously, something to do with licensing; I was the first test case. My plea of ignorance was ignored ! Fined £25. I was a bit miffed about it to say the least.
On that basis Is it not the responsibility of migrants to educate themselves with the fishing law before they fish in their adopted country.?

Wrong again even misquoting what you originally accused me of which if I remember correctly was THEFT OF FISHING RIGHTS, NOT larceny, show me the exact part of the theft act where until recently it said theft of fishing rights, as I said I COULD NOT have been accused of theft of fishing rights because that never existed when I was guesting so you see your wrong yet again, he he cheer up you aint wrong all the time just some of it.

Hilarious :D:):wh

Yes Mark it is, the information is readily available but the fish killers don't bother and that's another reason why education is not the answer, you have to want to learn to be educated.

They're not starving, they're as well versed in playing the system as any 'home grown' scrounger. It's theft, pure and simple but because it's fish and not banknotes it's ignored.
These people help themselves safe in the knowledge that PC and the hand wringing nimbies will back them up all the way.

Ha ha-Ive done all-sorts Benny to earn a crust, the funny thing was when I had that accident, just a small shunt, I had an old chap in the passenger seat, and I put my hand out to stop him hitting the windscreen. He was OK. This is when I got taken to court for due care and attention and some bright spark uncovered this new license law. On top of that 3 months later I got a letter from the old chaps solicitor claiming for his hat which he had lost during the accident; thought I had nicked it. It was a smelly old trilby-You couldn't make it up if you tried.
Well paid, sometimes, I drove some over blinged, camera wielding yanks around Dover all afternoon once, they gave a £100 tip, a lot of money back then. I remember it well because I had already put a tenner on their fare as they were rude to me !

If you come to this country you should be knowledgeable with English laws and stick to them. Break the law and your sent back simple. Lengthy court cases cost angling clubs money with no guarantee of a win. If you don't win you get landed with a bill, and clubs cannot afford to take this risk
And try catching them that's a very different story when it comes to fishing. As I know all to well with the work I carry out with my local angling clubs.

Just to redress the balance; it came to my notice a few months ago that some British anglers were night fishing for catfish which is not allowed over here in France. You can only fish for carp at night on public waters, and only in specific places. There are regular checks carried out by fishery police day and night but it would be difficult for them to distinguish between carp gear and catfish tackle unless they asked the anglers to reel in.

Fishing without permission is a Schedule 1 Theft Act 1968, and therefore a criminal, offence.

No angling club would need to take the culprit(s) to court as this will be done by the Police and the CPS.

So, even if the case is not proven then there would be no costs at all for the club.
