A delayed start after waiting eagerly for the postie. Unfortunately, the river was a little too full to go trotting a worm for trout, as I'd have really liked to be doing.;)

Instead, I went to a local stillwater in the peeing rain. I'm not a big fan of using centrepins on stillwaters, but it was just an excuse to get out with a shiny new one. Fortunately, it didn't turn out too bad after a slow start and a move. A few small roach, skimmers, perch and big gonks were bolstered by a couple of small tench, what looks suspiciously like a big roach/bream hybrid and a feisty little carp. Good fun on light gear and no new kit hoodoo.

Nice reel and well christend Sam*, not really that long now until you can christen it properly on some running water.

We can't trott worm round these parts as the clubs or landowwners have clauses/ rules preventing it, same with spinning and lures, we can only use them at the start of the coarse fishing season...fly only for us mere mortals. Maybe I should trott a fly ;), saying that I think the club committe would be a little upset lol.

First trite fishing trip today. Farmoor reservoir near Oxford with the Big Fellah who is desperate to get a few trips in before he has his knee replaced in early May.

Conditions were nigh on perfect, overcast, warm, light ripple and clouds of buzzers swarming off and the trite gorging on them. In less than a couple of hours I'd had a dozen bars of silver and we both decided to go try somewhere else as it was a bit too easy. So we had a couple of hours on the other ressie for the sum total of one missed take between us. Back to our original starting point and even though the sun was now pushing the fish deeper and further out we basically picked up where we'd left off.

We ended up with 30 trout between us....17 to me and 13 to Phil before his knee got too painful. Best fish about 4.5lb to the Big Man and the rest between 2-3 lb. All on Daiwl Bachs fished right in the surface.

Swallows, martins and kingfishers but no cuckoo yet. In trite terms just about the perfect way to start . Loved it...but as Im now officially an "Old Boy" Im very tired this evening.

Swapped the line on the new centrepin for a floating line. Didn't leave the house until 1730 for a quick dabble on the river. A glorified excuse to have another go with the new pin. With the river still up a fair way, I wasn't really expecting a great deal. Ended up quite frustrated by tiddlers nipping chunks off my worm. Give them just a small mouthsized section to go at and no bites were forthcoming. Ended the session with a couple of fish around the 3lb mark.

Slow day to start up on the wolds. Dry forecast but it p1ssed.
Four carp to 11lb on brown bread and strawberry paste in the PM.
One roach over 1lb on 8lb bs straight through to a size 6!!

That roach reminds me of a previous thread about accidentals on inappropriate tackle.

Had a nice days fishing yesterday, sunny in the morning then clouding over with a bit of drizzle later.
Had about thirty bream and skimmers, a few roach and Rudd, best bream about four pounds, roach and Rudd up to about six ozs.
No crucians yet sadly, though the chap on the pond behind us had a couple of nice ones, both about two pounds.fished expander pellets over liquidised sweet corn and hemp,

All in the the margins about I rod length out, using ten foot float rod and pin.
Only hooked one carp, but it came of after a minute or so.

Nice to back out in better weather, enjoyed it.

A mixture of warm sun and variable wind plus the possibility of heavy rain left me undecided on swim choice and for a good fifteen minutes I roamed along the bank trying to decide. In the end I plumbed for one that would be free of sun until late morning, but one that should in tip down I would get very wet with no facility for a brolly spike !

I sat well back as usual with only 2' of rod poking over the water ( must but a longer landing net handle ! ) dropping a very small float into about 5' of water and this accompanied by marble size balls of groundbait ( that's a large marble ) and a trickle of red maggots. I had intended to use freshly prepared giant hemp but in the early gloom decide on the reds which produced several small roach...

Then it started; Being at the other end of a eleven foot rod it was easy to see every miniscule movement of the float, but even then only total concentration detected something of a 2mm lift of the float ( which has a series of thin black bands every 3mm ) before it settled again. All motion stopped so I removed a no 6 shot to show more of the float above water and this sort of helped me see the following dips, or rather semi sinkings over the next few minutes. Eventually the end of the float, never quiet submerging, reached the water surface so I struck gently. Solid resistance told me crucian and minutes later a nice 1,5lb fish was landed. The identical scenario followed before the next crucian came to the net, this time a little bigger at 2lb or just over, this being pretty good for the water.

The day promised much and I was very pleased to strike into what proved to be a much bigger fish and looked to be nearer 3lbs as it slid toward the net. Unfortunately it was at this time the hook hold decided to failed ( or so I thought ) and a surprised fish headed into the depths, but on checking the hook was missing, the line having failed at that point.
Another smaller fish was landed but this spelt the end of the crucian fishing as the next four fish were roach around 1/2lb a piece.

Over the next few hours I caught another dozen roach up to 3/4lb both on hemp and red maggots with a couple of 30 minute spells on wheat, corn and bread just to see how they would respond in a swim already producing steadily. Nothing did so.....

.......but it's those crucian bites that held my attention through the morning and continues to do so as I write this. Such tentative bites ( which didn't alter despite changes in shotting and depth ) are very frustrating as it's almost impossible to imagine what goes on below the surface, and for the life of me I cannot fathom how they move a float just millimetres, both up and down, without it eventually sliding away !
All fish were hooked nicely in the top lip, but I don't know if that tells me anything or not....

I did think seriously about trying the ' Greenie ' method but the finite details hadn't lodged themselves in my brain', so it will have to wait for another day...............Could be interesting !

Anyway, I had a lovely morning and fished on into the afternoon although only catching the odd roach on hemp as the sun blessed my swim. Plenty of bird life to enjoy and I smiled to see the blue tits performing acrobatics in the constant search for insects, and my friendly robin calling by for a few maggots...

A littler miffed that house stuff denies me another mornings session today, but the wife is happy for me to head off again tomorrow as she has a heavy day in the greenhouse with seeds and other matters that mean little to me...

Might just be a little colder though............................Mmmmmm..

Tee Cee What a lovely story and great day.Real shame about the biggie loss.

Silly as it sounds might be worth trying a single large shot just 2" from the hook and hit the lifts. Works for me.

Yes, the 'lift method' can be very effective, particularly when the turbulence' of foraging fish can otherwise waft the bait up in the water above where they are focused.............

Good fun off the top. I haven't fished Farmoor for a few years but did give it a go a few times and had similar days to you although not that number of fish. I did wander over to the other part and spotted a big brown patrolling the edge. Gave it a couple of hours and succeeded in getting one solid take. It was on and off in a blink of an eye :eek:mg:

When its "on" I defy anybody to show me better trite fishing. People shouldn't be put off by it being a concrete bowl as its tucked away in the Oxfordshire hills and it really is very lovely up there.....though the concrete does play havoc with your reels !

Some very big pike in there too....and I mean VERY big pike. The quality of the fish is superb...both trite & pike. Fight like sea trout.

:eek:mg:Take no notice of me Tee-Cee,
I had a similar situation the other day - little finicky bites that would have been dismissed if there had been a bit of 'chop' on the water - is it a touch or isn't it?

When it dipped a bit more than usual - after what seemed like hours of this I was so wound-up that I struck too hard  - felt a brief resistance - then nothing! - wound-in to find the hook missing from the end of the 2lb bottom!

Re-rigged with a hair-rigged 18, baited with 2 kernels of sweetcorn, 4" from a chain of 5x no.6 shot - using a 2BB Glow-tip set slightly overdepth then wound-down to just show the tip in 4' of water - settled down to play the waiting-game again!
Same all over again, yellow-band just appears, disappears, appears, disappears,.... and so on - all in just a 1-2mm shift - eventually it slides under! Nowt!

After this had happened a few times - it stopped happening - I decided a change of bait was in order so switched to garden peas. Whole thing repeated again - nowt there!

So switched to worm - twitchy bites continued but resulted in a more positive take - and this 1lb fluorescent creature emerged from the depths!

FUN_0122-cr_zpsuzixpndk.jpg

Continued the tactiics - resulting in 3 lost fish and a very str.e..t...ched worm - then a 6oz Cru hybrid - and finally something that took me around the lake - a really fat football-shaped 12lb Mirror! That one caused a few palpitations!
FUN_0138_zpswm7gst84.jpg

Can't claim any credit on the day really - other than only 1 more person caught 1 skimmer all day - he was complaining he was getting twitchy bites all day - but no fish!

Pal Paul Monaghan ( has very good blog) fished it last week with beautiful home made pike flies (his flies now available in the rangers office to buy) and had 2 pike c 10lb and lost a real biggie est 20+.

Also had a trout over 5.

Yes I love it there. Anyone organising a Fish In day?

A very good point about the turbulence of foraging fish - maybe this is the cause of the twitches on the float - particularly when using bulkier baits like 2 kernels of corn! Worth a thought Tee-Cee?

I also adopted the Greenie method but with little effect yesterday. 2 roach on bread and not a touch on wheat this time. I wasn't really focussed on the fishing but did enjoy some sunshine.

How did I get on today....I cycled to my club lake to do my normal checking up. Its private land, fenced and well signed. Had to ask a studious looking chap if he was a member- knowing he wasn't.
He told me he wasn't doing any harm and didn't see why he couldn't sit there reading on the bench that members had grafted to erect and fixed in.

When that didn't wash he reverted to aggressive and F off. Almost lost it. Didn't want to end up in court. Grrrrrr:mad:
