It felt positively warm at midday today when I set off to the river, however, it was like another world when I reached it! There was a horribly cold wind (I only had a thin tee shirt as usual) with gusts that must have been gale force, they blew so strong that they bent my float rod back upstream....at least it was upstream...good job n'all!
The river was up a few inches on normal levels and it was flowing with more color in it than I like so conditions where not really conducive with good trotting. Anyhow, I was there so I had to make the most of it. I didn't have a hint of a fish for the first half hour then the float dipped under and "fish on".
It was a barbel of about 7lbs and it was only just nicked on the outer edge of it's lip and in the outer layer of skin. I played it for a few minutes and nearly had it in the net a couple of times but the last time it came to the surface and came towards the net the hook pulled out. I was fishing in a powerful flow and the pressure was just to much for the hook to hold for very long...i'd had my fun playing it so it saved me the bother of unhooking it :). After that I did ok and landed eight barbel, no big fish but all above 6lb. The wind must have dried out my eyes, they where (and still are) stinging and I found it difficult to focus on my float unless I blinked rapidly for a moment or so putting moisture back on them so I called it a day. I was actually shivering with cold through that bloody wind and yet when I unhooked fish the water felt quite warm, wierd in'it!

I had another session on the Lea today. Started fishing at midday but, apart from a nibble or two from some small roach I had nothing until I started to pack up at 7.30.

It was the same on my last session but that was on a bright day with a low and clear river. Today was overcast and, following the recent rain, a bit of colour and a decent level and flow. I thought it would be good conditions for some daytime action. Oh well just shows that fishing is not a science.

It's only a small barbel but it certainley gave me the run around.

Fished a friendly match on Clattercote yesterday organised by another Forum. Drew the furthest peg from the car park, made further by the amount of tackle required for this type of fishing, rucksack, chair, rods and keep nets, respect for the guys who lug it around on a permanent basis. Finished third with 11.08, dozens of small Perch and a PB Tench of 5.14. Good to see some familiar faces and a great day out. Jerry went home happy, no Bream were caught:D

Just got back from a break on the south coast where I managed a few trout and eels from streams I'd never heard of this time last year. With many dog walkers passing by saying the old "I never realised there was anything in there" line I do wonder whether some people really take in their surroundings.

Also did a bit of harbour fishing and being a one trick pony I had to run a float through even though I was on the sea wall 50 yards from the sea. Managed to get the Mullet feeding well and taking although had to go down to a size 14 to get bites on the smallest bits of bread, watching it drop through the clear blue water the float was more a vehicle for casting rather than any indicator as each time the bread was played with as only mullet can do. Fishing light by sea standards it was breathtaking fun watching the bread drift down through the water and the chaos that ensued when a connection was established with those white lips.

Love to say I got them all in but you know mullet!

this was the best I could do

They were too far out for me to get to and this tiny pipe fish fell off a bit of weed I reeled in, It looked like a pipe fish, still a nice day, met some nice people and had a good time.

Yesterday, nice ripple but bloody cold, 2lb of small roach and skimmers...

Today at Tring res, no ripple, hot and humid and 3 blade roach which got me 3rd.
Winner winkled out 3 slabs for 20lb. Son of Meldrew had 1lb of roach for second...

Disappointed of Metroland tonight:(

A couple of hours on the river with the nephew before the footie started yielded about five dace and a skip full of minnows. Roll on a hint of autumn to thin the damned things out a bit. Still, the nephew was quite content with minnows.

It's being the annual canal fest since friday here so no fishing Saturday but had a trip round the local canals on a tour boat this morning to be told i was on the only boat today using my favorite part of the canal so trip over quick 500 yrd rush home collect gear and bait off we go .

Arrived and setup straight into fish first cast it was a steady fish a chuck nothing big enough of individual mention but good number that was , Untill some muppet came howling thru on his barge with the bow almost out the water almost on the plane What he had in the back of it i dont know BIG diesel thats for sure .
Pity i had not got enough maggots to give him a few to keep him company.

Took best part of a hour for it to settle down again fished till about 16:30 after running out of maggots so good day had .

At last some fish. I don't like feathering for mackerel, you end up with 4 or 5 on the line all fighting each other and its just hauling in a lump and its hard work-having said that!. Much prefer float fishing which I did with a carp rod and a large freshwater float. I put a long trace on, lugworm on the bottom and half a sandeel on two other hooks further up fishing about 10 ft. Caught one mackerel and then this little silver bar, a bass which went back, lovely fish though.

Then had three mackerel on at once, even took the lugworm on the bottom hook; thought I had coped a big bass at first but they did the carp rod proud , bent right over-3 mini tuna fish on a carp rod with no weight to impede them, something to relish.

They are under the grill as I write, bon munch.

PS-they went down a treat, slightly better than grilled barbel. (only joking):) be-gads-don't want to fall out with the barbel society.

Blimey! Nice one.

I went out down the river today with a mate who's not fished for thirty odd years apart from the now three times I've taken him.

Started him off in a straight swim and he got used to that pretty quickly and caught a dace on worm.
We then moved to a small weir pool where he enjoyed catching gudgeon, perch and a chub around a pound.

I thought I'd texted my wife about the school run, but it seemed I'd texted Simon instead. Didn't notice until (s)he texted back:eek:mg::eek:mg::eek:mg:

"Ok babe lol..,"

Had are usual Tuesday fishing trip yesterday, fished from 8.30 til seven o clock,
Really nice day to be out, certainly feels like autumn now, cool first thing then got quite warm later.

We decided to have a days carp fishing, nice and relaxing sat behind two rods, gave my new alarms a go, pair of Nash sirens S5s, that my wife and daughter in law had got me for my birthday, quite impressed there small and neat and work well, also can adjust the volume a lot better, my old fox warriors were either to quite or to noisy, so the Nash are much better in that respect.

So one rod under a tree beside me, which usually has a few under it, and the other across to the island under an overhanging tree, that's were my cheap little Chinese bait boat comes in, £65 and worth every penny,I've had a lot of carp with this, from some places it would be hard to cast to, me and my mate shared at this and it's certainly paid for itself, also use it to tow my deeper fish and depth sounder around.

Going to use this to map the depths and features shortly on all six ponds should be useful to know it's already found a lot about one of the waters, and we have found a few good spots with it.

Any way my mate had two carp about nine or ten pounds, and I had three:), I had two about nine pounds and a lovely common of fifteen pounds ten ounces, cracking fish and they all gave a good scrap, the bigger one especially,
Really enjoyed the day and we are going again tomorrow, two years I've been retired now and really enjoying, times seems to go so fast though this summer has flown by.
Still had my yearly check up and blood test the other day and everything is fine, so can't complain.
Every things good for now.

Warks Avon at Pershore with Pal Rich.

Trotting. First fish went chub bream roach dace perch gudgeon.

River was alive with fish, mainly perch in the 4-8oz class and lots of bits. Rich managed a couple of better perch best 2.4.

Spent last 2 hours trying for a barbel..no joy. Just a chair leveller brim.
Probably finished with about 20lb, in a difficult downstream inside wind.

.

Sorry to hear that Graham. I am delighted to say that I am still brimless this year. Sadly....I cannot say the same about Clarkies damned eels !

At least you've finally found a use for them. Outstanding idea !
