After the hunt for larger specimens earlier in the week didn't go quite to plan,
I decided to go out for a couple of hours fishing for bites.

Maggot feeder, 8" hooklength & size 18 kamasan resulted in two small fat perch.

:)

Managed to get out for an afternoon/early evening session last night. As Steve says, lovely mild conditions. Infuriating nibblers and pluckers until early evening then things livened up. I suspect that the Perch/Jacks were busy as every now and then loads of tiddlers jumped out of the water and there was some ominous movements below. I noticed some further movement on the far bank, which I guessed were Chub and cast a lump of cheese paste to where they were. No mistaking this bite! Wallop! Not massive, about two pounds, but very welcome after two previous blanks. Lovely end to the day. Hope this Indian Summer lasts a little longer as really enjoying watching the wild life, especially the bats that follow my bait before I cast, wonderful stuff!

Grabbed an afternoon at my favoured commercial yesterday, trying out some bait additives (robin red on to meat) and a different groundbait and had a very quiet 5 hours!
2 large Bream and one nice Tench were all I banked :-( the pools larger residents we're all cruising around but no one took anything good.
Hey ho!

I had a free day today,so i guested with a club from Rugby(Spring St),The match was at Barby Banks(Marshes),Rugby...I had been told that floating baits were allowed on these matches, and would probably win!!,i did,nt really pay much heed as i dont fish floating baits...As was expected-Chris Granger(local bread Head),absolutely mullered it with 102lb!!:eek:2nd was Robin(Breakfast Animal)Smith, with 33lb(proper fishing),and i managed to sneak into the frame, with 30-9-0,small carp and silvers, the highlight of my day,was a 2-10-0 perch, which took a 6mm expander:eek:,4th was Nathan Granger with 25-8-0,so it fished quite hard, apart from, the winner!!!,I,ve got an open on Toft silver lake,on tues, thurs and King of the Toft (rd 5),on sat, coming up this week,Good luck,Gazza

Club fixture today on the river Kennet just west of Reading.
Nice upstream breeze and a tinge of colour. Around 6 ft deep down the middle ideal for trotting. 15ft rod and a 4BB balsa and crowquill topper float to a 20 hook. Used both GB feeder and maggot feeder on my tip rod to 16 hook. Started on the tip with worm and got a perch then a big crayfish...
Changed to the float and had chublets and tiny dace on single maggot.
Lucky I bought some White maggots as they didn't want reds at all?
Scratched around for the final hours and weighed in 2:09. for 4th.
Winner had 7:10. 2nd 3:14. 3rd 3:09.
One angler (goaty) lost 2 big barbel, and the matchwinner lost a massive chub in the dying minutes.
8 fished.

Club match on the R Colne at Uxbridge Moor
Opposite of Peter C on the Kennet, nasty downstream wind and tapwater clear meant that was always going to be a real struggle
Drew one of the better chub swims , although getting one out would always be problematical given the assortment of cabbage, whips and floating pennywort on the inside half of the river. Never had a sign of one though. Up to the last 90 minutes could only find the very occasional bleak and only had about half a pound. Was feeding quite heavily by this time trying to buy a chub and unexpectedly started to pick up the odd 2-4 oz roach running through at half depth (had 6 ft plus of water, deep for the Colne). Not enough of them though, ended up with 3-4 . 5-3 of roach and perch won it, second had a barbel and a few bits for 4-14, then 3-13.
Could all have been a bit different after only 10 minutes though. One of our members, who only fishes a club match if its on a big fish venue, lost a BIG barbel second run through on rolling meat...

I fished from 4.30 pm until dark or at least until I could no longer see the float properly. I landed 14 barbel and lost another five and a dace. After loosing four fish I changed my hook as I was certain it was it causing them to come off and all the fish (except one) after I put on a new hook stayed on so I guess it was down to the hook. The fifth fish to come off was foul hooked in it's peck fin so I was happy it pulled out. I did catch one poor fish with a nasty big barbless circle type hook in it's face and the hook had disfigured the fish...so much for barbless hooks coming out, it had curled right round in the fishes face and would never have come out. I always check the fishes mouths when I catch them and another fish had a barbed spade end hook about size 10's lodged in it's throat, I removed that easy enough and it left no damage.

Here's a pic of the barbel with the barbless hook wedged in it's face...

Here's a few other pic's from the session...

Thank's steve, I was happy to releive the fish of their burden.
Yeah, it was a good session, it's always good when you drop on a shoal when they're in feeding mode :).

Done a few hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons. Maggot bashing on the Chesterfield Canal! Absolutely loved it, mixed bags of around double figures made up of roach, perch, dace, skimmers and chublets. Absolutely great fishing and had lots of roach near to about 12oz, good perch coming out too when fished deep - one or two well over a pound!

Saw a pike of 15lbs+ Saturday afternoon so...

Evening on lures and spinners yesterday, resulting in five or six reasonable sized perch of about a pound and three pike about four to eight pounds. Going out with the lures again tonight for a few hours trying to chase down a 2lb+ perch or double figure pike. Continuing the predator specimen hunt on Tuesday morning, proper Tee-Cee style fishing - heading out for 4am!

Tight lines, Cal.

Met up with Simon today for a bit of lure fishing.

We tried the Chess, where I caught a tiny perch on a jigged worm

Then onto the canal where Simon caught a bigger one on a spinner.

I finished up on a backwater, where most of the time was spent talking to a good lure angler , who showed me various 'hotspots'.

I ended the day with a tiny jack which fell to a 4play dirty roach shad.

A long gruelling slog on s specimen pool yesterday , I really think there is something up with it , not a single liner all day and saw only two fish on the surface, even the Bailliff couldn't catch one.
i landed the only fish of the day at just over 10 lb ( its tilted back a little )

I went out this afternoon for a very quick lure session on a backwater.

After bouncing rubber off the bottom for 3/4 of an hour with nothing to show for it but bits of carpet, lost tackle and plastic bags I thought I'd have a break and opened the lure boxes for a bit of a ponder.

I spied a largish (and expensive, for me) lure, which I hadn't tried before and decided to see how it swam in the clear water.

I cast 15', not the usual fingers crossed cast of 40' through the trees, and thought "that's a lovely action" as it twitched from side to side.

Then bang, a tiny jack went for it.

Most pleasing :)

I remembered my camera this time.

My first match of the week at Toft silver lake, resulted in a blowout, and the end peg bias struck again!!As we fished both sides of the far end,it resulted in 4 end pegs available-all of which took top spots, apart from my mate Bad H who gatecrashed in 3rd place with 43-0-0,Dave(Jigger man) Cleaver took top spot, with 50lb odd,47-0-0 was 2nd,Lance(Baggin machine)Chubb was 4th with 37-14-0....My 20-9-0 ,which consisted of 7 carp,2 f1,s and a few silvers, put me 6th:eek::eek:14 fished,Our thursday fixture has been switched to Barby Mill, its a pairs double header fished over two lakes,1 angler on the big lake and 1 on the small pool....should be a good match, skimmers on big pool, and stockies on small pool...Good luck ,Gazza
