I caught......f**k all!

Back to the commercials for me!

What did you pay to fish the canal? F All? - Now you know why commercials are so called! ;)

Seriously, though - it's a different sort of challenge. You need to work at it and not just give up at the first/second attempt! Get some gen off the local anglers on baits, locations, times, and techniques and give it another bash.
Tight lines!

You will need to use different tackle on the "cut", the fish on natural waters tend to be more self sufficient so, lighter line 2-3 lb, smaller hooks, 18-22 dependant on your eyesight;) and more natural bait, maggot or pinkie, worm or bread (people feed ducks:rolleyes:).

There are some good stretches of canal over towards Bromsgrove and Droitwich, don't give up too quickly

Justin Ackroyd's comment about Ansac on the River Vienne thread reminded me that I hadn't got round to fishing this stretch despite having intended to do so for two years. I'd been over the bridge dozens of times but never stopped there. So today despite the weather forecast getting it totally wrong again I braved the clear blue skies and set off with the dog and light coarse gear for an afternoon on the river.

The white water to your right is where the dam has breached and results in most of the flow being confined into a narrow channel running right to left and front to back in the picture. I fished the triangular area in the foreground where the flow is less and the water a little deeper. The actual swim was close to a willow about three rod lengths out. The faster water near the far bank was in full sun otherwise I would have chosen to fish there, but after reccying it I decided on the shady bank.

I started off using small red worm on a 14 to 4lb fluoro' to 6lb hook length on a JW Travel Quiver / Avon and exclusive €13 Crivit 3000 reel. Got rattles from the off and third cast I had awakened enough to hit the bite..........

Then got a roach about the same size :eek:mg:

Changed to 8mm pellet banded straight onto the hook bend for no result. Worked the water casting further out searching the swim and changed to sweetcorn which resulted in sharp taps, but no firm pulls. Another angler arrived and began to inflate a dinghy about 50 metres upstream when I got a good pull round and was into a nice fish that tested the drag on the exclusive Crivit reel and put a fair bend in the light rod. The other guy saw the rod hooped over and ran over, grabbed the net and clumsily banged the frame into the line while chasing the fish causing the line to break.

Fortunately when he lifted the net the fish was in it.........

These river pigs don't half fight compared to their still water cousins. :)

Had one more knock before I packed up and took the dog for a walk before leaving for home. There is a good smooth glide just above the weir that needs a good looking at when I haven't got the dog. It entails wading knee deep to get the rod over a 2 metre wide border of weeds. Next time...........

Got back mid-afternoon from a 72hr session seeking a 14lb+ bream; 3 days and nights for a sum total of 3 bites, all tench, weighing 4, 5 and 7lb. Though they were really by-catches, the last one was targeted.
As I saw it roll at about 80 yards and put a bait out to it...

Going for a look at the Oxford canal tomorrow, to see if I can find any carp to have a go for.

Back again for the decent perch. Started out fishing the waggler. After a couple of frustrating hours, which resulted in a few tiny dace, I succumbed to fishing the tip. Not exactly my favourite method, mainly because I'm not very good at it. It was a good move though, the lazy sods obviously couldn't be bothered to chase a moving bait. A static bait saw the dace suddenly get bigger and the perch put in an appearance. I ended up with five perch over a pound, topped off with the best one at 2lb 4oz. I'd rather have caught it on the float though!;):)

nicepix...Great pic of the river and a lot more interesting than fish....A few more would be nice just to give an idea of where you fish - you being in a foreign country...

No hurry though !

ps Very good write-up as well ....

Thanks Tony. The pics are courtesy of a new camera Little Wife bought me for my birthday next month. Old people like to get in front with things like that. :D

As you can see I had the auto date thingie activated. That has now been switched off. I haven't really had opportunity to take photos for the last year or so since my i-phone went belly up and the 'proper' camera is too bulky to take fishing. The mobile phone I've been using is a 19th century model with no camera. To be honest the scenery here is little different to Yorkshire and Derbyshire, but I will try and make the effort just for you ;)

Going for a look at the Oxford canal tomorrow, to see if I can find any carp to have a go for.

Went for a look at a few swims that were carp hotspots of old (20-30yrs ago), there's been a lot of change over the last 20yrs but I managed to locate some reasonable sized carp. Sadly not the proper sleek commons and heavily scaled almost black backed mirrors, it appears they've replaced with slightly ornamental ones.

I fished for a couple of hours and got pestered by roach, though they were a good stamp of fish, 12oz-1lb4oz and chub of 2-3lb. That was on corn, just prior to leaving I baited up with a few 18mm boilies and 16mm pellets and will return tomorrow afternoon/evening and see if I can catch one or two of them.

How did you locate them , I know two places on my local canal where there are carp because i regularly see them , cycling or walking the dogs.

cg74............I thought a good old fashion 'brollie' would do the trick as you're 'going back' to an old haunt ! I have a nylon green jobie of '75 vintage if it would help.....add some smilies here !

'pestered by roach 12ozs to 1lb 4ozs'............I nearly burst into tears when I read that, and this from one who would like to SEE a 1lb 4oz roach, let alone catch one !!!

Now, 'Oxford canal'...Mmmmm, not too far from the High Wycombe area me thinks, but still that damned M40 to negotiate.......even more 'sad' smilies here..

Maybe I could use the 'park & ride'............................

Like I said in the post you quoted, I went to swims that had historical form for holding carp and though one never offered anywhere near as much cover as it used to, it still offered reasonable cover.

If you're trying to find canal carp on an unknown stretch, where I'd head to are areas that get well trodden by humans, be that dog walkers, cyclists, boat dwelling residents - whatever, these areas offer a certain degree of sanctuary from predators.
So obviously that means marinas are tops, but other likely areas are large clumps of trees and bushes. Boats moored bow to bow are another good feature especially in slightly deeper water with concrete or shuttered banks, simply place your bait next to the wall (bank) as the carp often live between the wall and the boat.

Once you've found a possible swim and there aren't hoards of ducks etc, just throw a load of floating pellets over the carp's heads, literally where you think they might be laid up, not where you want to fish for them.

Then wait, if its a warm afternoon, normally they don't take long to show themselves, whist waiting I check out other nearby spots of interest.

Tee-Cee, if you want to fish the Ox canal for roach, as a general rule just head for busy areas (same as for carp), roach seem to be making a real resurgence at the moment, the common theory being that when the BW removed most of the carp about 15yrs ago, it left a biomass void that chub, bream and roach seem to have filled??
If you want anymore details, send me a PM.

Nah, if I can't fit my bedchair under it without risking getting wet feet and/or a wet head, it ain't going to happen!!

After work session again. Lovely afternoon/evening. Three roach on bread two Crayfish on Luncheon Meat:eek: Nights are drawing in though and I am still wondering where the Summer went to, but hey ho. A nice relaxing end to a tiring week. Good luck to all those out over the weekend.

Not a peep yet, but neither have the other two on tonight. I don't expect anything much to happen just yet as I spent a good few hours spodding it to death. Still, I didn't manage to scare them off completely. There was the odd show while I was spodding. However, this place is quite notorious for lots of activity producing no takes. It also seems to take them an age to get on the bait. A bad case of second, or third if you're unlucky, night syndrome. Hopefully, I'll only have to wait until the morning.
