Fished an open match at Tring today on the GUC near the station.
A narrow pound at just 11m wide but fairly deep all across. Drew peg 2 which was ok apart from the floating rubbish which kept drifting backwards and forwards all 5 hours of fishing time...

Usual start here on punch hard across and bites from the off mainly small roach as is normal here. After 2 hours of constant bites they switched off so I changed to worm at the middle of the far shelf. 2 bites there, a better roach and a tiny perch. Matey next to me fished worm close to the barge and had 4 big perch so I was in trouble with nowhere to go. I persevered on the shelf hoping for a bonus fish but none appeared. Last hour the roach across woke up again and I topped up with some more, all small again alas. At least the weather was nice and I enjoyed it as usual...

Weighed in 2lb 14 for nowhere whilst matey on peg 1 (who had driven down from Suffolk) won the match by a long chalk with 11lb 4. Worth the journey, trousering £100.

2nd had 5lb 8. And 3rd 4lb 13....

20 fished....

Nice write up Simon.

Out of interest did the four perch make up the winning catch or did he add to them with anything else?

A "Jerryesque" 9-3 session on a commercial I hadn't fished for a couple of years. New owners have built new pegs, cut back a lot of overhanging branches, reduced prices and even made me consider a breakfast. Fished a 2BB waggler with maggot and chopped worm, started feeding the margin and fishing about two rod lengths out, four skimmers and a carp of about 1.5 lbs were the result so turned to the margins for a tiny perch. a roach of about half a pound, the obligatory gudgeon and over thirty carp, the latter with a combined weight approaching 5lb, seems like they may have re-stocked as well:rolleyes: In amongst them was a solitary crucian which was at least 3" in length. Numerous large carp basking in the sun none of which showed any inclination to feed. 75 days to go and counting :wh

No perch again for me this weekend, it would seem the love boat is still at sea with no sign of it docking anytime soon.

It was a noticeably better session than last week on the same water, this time I got on the end of the wind and not only did we have a decent starting temperature (as opposed to -1 the week before) but there was a tinge of colour too.

No big shocks with the rigs, the usual twin float set up just off the rod tips and despite a couple of headline events the day on a whole was on the lean side.

I caught the same, worm snaffling pike twice and I have a strong feeling I’ve seen him before, at one point the pike were mullering me but things settled down again and besides a lone b***m I also took one carp to each rod which tested the Drennan 3.3lb flouro hooklinks nicely, each fish coming in at 18-1 and 15-3…

I would have happily have swapped them for a couple of 2lb perch but they were marvellous creatures in their own right and the lack of anyone collecting day ticket money gave the day a quaint air of cheekiness.

There used to be an honesty box but someone nicked it! :eek:mg:

:w

Love the colour co-ordination between the carp and the float. Both stunning specimens. I don't mind the odd carp when they look as good as that. Lovely shot too.

I'm in the same place MG....Too much other house stuff going on to get my head around fishing, and this will last for some weeks/months yet. If/when I get to the bank I start to think I should be at home doing something else. Not a guilt complex, just that a trip out for me starts and ends with a nice relaxed feel to the whole day, and not worrying if a plumber is going to turn up!!

Not a HDYGO subject, but then being a fisherman is not always about sitting next to water..........................Ah well..

Yep PIP are givin me the pip right now and things are about to get down an dirty if they hiss me off next week you will no doubt hear the bang bubbeling is an understatement :mad::mad::mad::mad:
Other than that report coming up far better day today .

I'm off to sunnier climes for a week on the 'morrow, so today was my last chance for a fishing fix for a bit. I swung by Dig Pit but it was looking well occupied so I headed off to Blackbrook Basin to see if I could weedle out some tench / crucian. Failed miserably on that count but I did get a handful of roach up to about 12oz & a few skimmers but it was hard going which I'll put down to the bright sunshine. It was busier than I prefer but it seems that it was hard going all round, however I managed to out fish the pole boys on my trusty waggler & I can live with that :w

Early start this morning to see if could pick out a tench or 2 . Up was still dark but must of eaten something was glued to the throne after set off with Imodium !

Someone else on here had the same issue day or so ago can't remember but didn't fancy ducking and diving in nearest hedge !

I had set up an Avon rod on a groundbait feeder with combination of maggots , hemp , sweetcorn and chopped worm . Clipped up and cast regularly to same spot . Also had a float rod rod length out loose feeding corn and casters on lift float method after a hour and half hooked into a tench but unfortunately "ping" hook pull and float up a tree ! After 3 hours changed spots once sun came out to a big overhanging tree on a point of the bank , a few occasional beeps but no cigar .

Cast into open water again but closer in around 20 yards and carried on with feeder nothing on that but odd beep all day .

No more action on float so another Avon rod with a inline and a braid hooklink with 2 fake maggots and in last hour 4 dustbin lid sized bream . I was surprised they all fought well on a Avon rod .

This is the 1st weekend the lake been open so don't think all been woken up yet due to no feed going on since sept . All in all a good day

Only had time for a morning session this weekend so an early start at the local club lakes was in order.

I arrived in the dark, breakfast butty and freshly made latte in hand and had a munch and slurp while the sun came up, watching the early rising fish show around the lake.

So as not to waste too much time I chose a swim near the car park (about 15 yds from the van to be precise) - slightly lazy I know but several big carpy 'spladoosh' sounds convinced me it was a good idea.

I'd decided to try out the whole 'only take one bait and plug away at it - it makes you more confident in that bait' thing as proposed by Steve Ringer or some other 'angling guru' that I'd read somewhere.

The chosen bait was basically pellets. I've got a bucket that I keep a pellet and particle mix in that I use for mini pva 'teabags' so that was the plan.

For those that like to know the gear was a Drennan Series 7 12ft Match Feeder rod, paired with a FD4000 reel loaded with 6lb Drennan method line. Hooklength was 4.4lb Drennan Fluro with a size 14 Drennan Super Specialist and a bait band. (I just realised that it sounds like I'm sponsored by Drennan!! Pure coincidence I can assure you.)

So on went a 3/8 oz bomb, threaded on my teabag and put a 6mm pellet on the band and first chuck was about 25 yds out in open water.

Loads of knocks and liners showing on the tip and then a proper pull-round. After a fight of 5 - 10 minutes fishy was in the net (not Drennan) and on the mat.

15lb 8oz of slightly podgy Common Carp

After that I had a couple of Roach to about 1lb, loads more knocks but that was it - time for Sunday Lunch.

At 59 I'm probably as good or bad at fishing as I'm going to get, but one thing I'm trying to improve is avoiding that “Why did I come her today?” feeling. It would be good to find myself in the wrong place/swim at the wrong time less often.

Like Sunday for instance. Arrived at windless lake under a cloudless sky. Club match on the East bank. Bivvies all along the North and South banks. “Chose” the available peg on the West bank. Owners having a big maintenance day, so began hammering scaffold poles into the bank at next peg. Leads landed in front of me as carp anglers demonstrated the range and power of their casting. Then guys got into a boat and rowed around the lake to put in algae -beating dye. While a mate flew a drone overhead to check the dispersal. And another drove a sit-on mower along the banks cutting the grass. Couldn't get a bite close in for couple of hours, so eventually caught 12lb or so of roach, skimmers and a tench fishing a slider at 20 yards where a few fish seemed to be hiding.

No complaints, It's a great place, and the maintenance is for everyone's benefit. but why didn't I anticipate what could be going on,on a Sunday flagged as the hottest day of the year so far?

Blimey...

I reckon Piccadilly Circus had a quieter day after reading that, at least you still managed to put a decent net of fish together :)

SKip,

Wonder if Binks could catch from the lake mentioned in said book? Make an interesting FM feature. Reckon his spicy prawn bait would likely be a waste of time though....:)
