How did you get on?

Having took the nice perch the day earlier I decided to return to the same water armed with a handful of Mepps Aglias and I should have known better than to cram two lure sessions into the same year.

I never had a sniff, I gave it a fair few hours and covered some water too.

Within the first half an hour I think I was fed up with it and the constant effort of it all reminded me of why I don't generally like lure fishing, it's much too much like hard work for my liking and I was even thinking about kicking around in the earth to see if I could find a worm but then realised I didn't have any single hooks with me :eek:mg:

One day though, one day...

I will catch a decent perch on a lure!

Just not this year... :w

Stick at it steve, a friend of mine had a drennan weekly award the other week for a massive near five lb perch on a simple silver spinner.

Just got back from a 'morning' session down the GUC where I fished longer than expected as the fish were having it quite nicely. Due to the wind it was a 'wag and mag' job to the far bank cover fishing on the drop. Within the first hour I had had eight species including a Ruffe but it was hard getting through the small stuff. I was grateful though that I was busy enough to keep warm as typically I picked a spot in the shade which was really really blowy.

Got through to the bigger stuff eventually with several scale perfect Roach pushing a pound and four battle scarred Perch pushing two which was great fun on the light gear. I packed up knowing i'd had a good day and walked back on the sunny side which was quite warm indeed. Free fishing and on Shanks's Pony too - Just add maggots, Fantastic!

Sounds like you had a very good day, I'm assuming that you weren't fishing at Lady Capels as you didn't mention any chub or chublets in your catch, or were there?

Today I was back at the club lake, I decided to not take maggots this time as last time all I got on them was small roach which gets a bit boring after a while.
So all I used for bait this time was sweetcorn and mini boilies as I was hoping to catch Tench Bream Chub or bigger roach.
I set up the float rod with sweetcorn and was not going to bother with another rod but after half an hour I setup a cage feeder on the other rod mixed up some groundbait and put a 10mm boilie on the hair.
After about an hour the alarm suddenly screamed on the feeder rod, when I picked up the rod I knew it was not a Bream, after about 10 minutes I had an aching arm and this in the net.

This I should say is the first carp I have caught and at 15 lb a bit bigger than I expected my first carp to be and not what I was expecting to catch today:)

The car is now on auto pilot as I spent another couple of hours at the lake this afternoon.

But I did catch a small but very hard fighting tench.:)

A pattern is emerging, how can I attract the tench without those "things" ?

Unfortunately they're always going to be a problem when 'tenching' - the best way is not to admit to catching them - like me..............;)

Weekly shop at 4 different supermarkets  done I decided I would have a few hours on a free water that I have been told has a reasonable head of Tench in it. I hadn't a clue where to start on it but decided that out of the wind was a good place to start :) and as the pool has a track that goes all the way round it I would use my electric man/tackle carrier to get round.

The water is situated between an industrial estate and a housing estate but it is surprisingly quiet considering, the water looked to be low and the swim I chose was just a "this looks ok" sort of choice, plumbed up and was a bit disappointed to find only 4 feet no matter where I tried still if that's all there is the fish wont have any other hiding places.

screen cap

Set up with 12 foot match rod 6lb reel line 3.3lb supplex hooklenth of around 3 feet to a 14s bait was corn, fished slightly overdepth with a small shot on the deck because of the side wind, got bites almost straight away which was a surprise to say the least and I missed it next one I was ready and connected with a small Roach continued in the same vane for the next 3 hours and decided that as the forecast rain was imminent I would pack up and return another day, fish were all in good condition and I doubt many of them had been caught before.

picture sharing

Some of the Roach had gold coloured gill covers, something I haven't seen before antone got any ideas on what causes this?

Was not feeling at my best this morning to say the least but ended up at the club pool after stopping to replenish the maggots and some replacement hooks .

Chose my peg as there as just me a 1 other started slow lots of dips and stolen maggots but no fish so upped the hook to an 18 and started catching small skimmers a nice perch of aroun 8 oz then got took for a run round the peg by a very nice Crucian about 1.5lb then another similar fractionally larger back to tiddlers for a while then found the Tench on the hunt 2 to 3 to 3.5lbs more tiddlers then howling wind pete hissed off with the wind came home about 16:30 .

So not a bad day would have been nice to have a few more decent fish but not complaining too loud ..

David Jason (touch of frost) on the banks this morning at the reservoir, blinding sunshine but having to wear my thermal winter boots as my ordinary wellies has split which explained the wet foot earlier in the week.
Set up the float with sweetcorn and legers with in-line method feeders - plastic popped up corn on one and a mini boilie on the other, settled back with a coffee to watch the buzzards and other feathery friends.
Had six bream to about two and a half pounds and two nice sized roach, started packing up and had a fast bite on the plastic corn - fish fought hard - pike about eight pounds hooked inside the mouth amongst the small upper teeth on the roof of its mouth . . .
still no tench . . . .

Back on the Canal again today as dad wanted to get out. There's something funny about a near two hour round trip to fish a water that's a ten minute walk from your house! Well you've got to see the funny side although the traffic and the pounding headache from repeating everything to the deaf old git does make me wonder at times. :D

Dad: Is there a bin lorry place near here?
Me : No
Dad: Is there a bin lorry place around here?
Me : No!
Dad : Cold?
Me : I said NO!
Dad : No?
Me : Yes no

The fishing well it was ok I guess considering the noise of us two sharing a swim, had some nice perch again and a healthy mix of fish including another Ruffe which must have been a pb as it looked quite big. Dad told me they grow bigger, well 'back in the day' and all that but it was the biggest i'd had, not that I catch that many. The Grand Union there is always good for a Ruffe or two each trip and there's not many places you can say that now.

I thought it felt mild and dispensed with thermals and fleece lined trousers!:( how wrong I was ! The sun barely put in an appearance but the bitterly cold wind did and remained an issue all day. I caught 18 fish( counted them on my counter) mainly roach and bream with one small common. The lake has four sides and I was sat on the south side with the wind to my left . On the left bank was a guy fishing with two rods. Opposite him and to my right were two blokes whose language was colourful to say the least. They were enthralled by the bloke to my left i.e. Opposite them. He put up his brolly at the first sign of drizzle and produced from his van a multi coloured wind break that you see at the seaside. He proceeded to hammer in the poles and created a barrier all around him . On several casts he caught the windbreak much to the amusement of the two gents opposite . They were muttering to themselves and I could hear every word. " he 'll start a BBQ in a minute , I bet he has got a Punch and Judy in that van, does he sell candy floss and so on"

When a BG van arrived they were convinced he was having gas connected to fuel a fire! With the entertainment and fish I had an enjoyable day:rolleyes:

It's something that only gets said in hindsight normally, enjoy, cherish and remember all those moments with your Dad (or Mum) however annoying and bloomin frustrating they can be. You'll miss that terribly when they're no longer there.

I know mate, trust me I do, all the criticism I have of the old fella is tongue in cheek and trust me I do say it to his face and visa versa. You don't go fishing with someone for that long without driving each other up the wall - in the right way of course ;)

Steady day yesterday, had to have a walk round too find two sheltered swims, these found, we set up about thirty yards apart and I decided to float fish close in as usual, ten ft rod and pin, been using a little hollow plastic dibber float, just the job for the way I like to fish, started on maggots, got a few small roach on these, changed to six mm expander pellets, over soaked micro pellets, started to get a few skimmers, and a few bream averaging about two pounds a piece.

When it went quiet I changed to corn, this did help keep the bites coming, so I carried on alternating between the two, according to my clicker I finished up with twenty four fish altogether, about eight small roach and skimmers, and sixteen bream around two pounds, best about three, I lost one at the net, which looked a lot bigger.

It was a nice day, not bad at all, out of the wind, even warmed up a bit when the sun came out, I haven't put any more bream pictures up, wait till I get a bigger one, a lot of birds singing today, chiff chaffs, willow warblers, robins, wren and curlews, there was a mallard duck with eight ducklings, first I've seen this year, still haven't seen a swallow yet, just sand martins, the carp are very quite yet, mick had a nicely marked mirror about eight pounds, none for me today.?
