Started today around 10.40 on the toughest of the two pools closest to the flat, ( a 'BarbelBoyo' session:)) after a couple of hours with 4 roach to around 6oz and 3 small perch on red maggot, moved down to the larger pool to fish a peg that produces a few decent roach and the odd bonus fish. First cast with a pinch of bread produced a roach of around half a pound but the small fry took a liking to the bait, resulting in many unhittable strikes and a degree of frustration. Changed hookbait to worm, loose feeding red maggot and took another 22 roach, best one a good pound with another 8 worthy of netting and a pristine tench that would have gone at least three pounds. No chance of fishing tomorrow as it's the residents management company AGM so I'll probably be out Monday at Holgans Farm or Lynn Carfenn.

A pleasant few hours spent on the estate lake which I fished alone again (are there any other members).?

A cool breeze under cloudy skies meant the coat was staying on, the fishing was patchy with my first very welcome roach on this lake, a number of very unwelcome bream and just the one 4lb tench that was foul hooked in the tail and convinced me I had a double figure carp for a good few minutes.

Well someone has to keep the side up i was out today club pool to find the pole warriors out loud & Proud (dang radio is going to get a bath one day) anyhow picked a swim as far as it is possible to be from their location a nice little peg hidden in the trees difficult to cast from but good all the same .

First chuck a 1.5 lb bream flot did not even get chance to settle bang off it went lost count of the skimmers and small roach 3 nice perch biggest just shy of 2lb and 2 decent roach 1.5lb plus meanwhile the pole warriors were lobbing all sorts at the water no takers , I did find that White maggots worked best for the morning but by about 14:30 ish they wanted Red and were ignoring the white ones just my luck i got a pint of mixed the bulk of which were white & yellow with a few reds back to buying reds only i think

Enjoyed the day best part of the peg i chose is you very rarely need a brolly the trees shelter you very well and keep the wind out ..

My life expectancy would have reduced considerably if I had gone fishing today; I was required in the kitchen ;)

This correspondent managed both. Most of the family are on holiday. Some in sunnier climes, the rest in a Dales caravan. My Aunt even turned up with my Grandmother. Four generations of the family present. I still managed the fifty yard walk to the small river for a couple of tiny grayling and a rogue escaped rainbow. Unfortunately, the place seems to be seeing much more angling attention than has been the case for many years. After walking and fishing in every conceivable spot over the half mile or so to the main river, I found that I'd been shadowing another angler.:( The little brown trout used to be utterly suicidal. Doesn't seem the case now. On the plus side, I mentioned to a friend recently that, in 30 years, I'd never had a grayling despite knowing they were present in the main river less than half a mile downstream. I was rather pleased to get a couple, even if they were just fingerlings and out of season.

Just about to carve / pull apart ours now - smells spectacular :D Hopefully the '81 Tondonia Rioja will be equally splendid :w

My beloved did actually give me permission for an afternoon sortie... & I declined  Prophetic as it transpires; despite BBC weather forecasting a fine afternoon after a morning deluge, it hosed it down - wrong on both counts :wh

I hope that they are more accurate for tomorrow when I will actually make it out!!

Because in the North East (the old Yorkshire and Northumbria regions), byelaws mean that it's perfectly legal (provided the riparian owner doesn't impose further restrictions, many do) to fish worms for trout. I don't do it a great deal and I stick to higher reaches of the rivers where trout predominate. The trout season also opens about a week after the coarse season closes up here. It's a large contributing factor in me believing that the closed season is pretty pointless. The rivers are effectively closed to angling for about a week in mid March. There's absolutely no need to be miffed, just the way things have been for many a year in this, and I believe a couple of other, areas of the country. (Cumbria, the South West and bits of Wales????)

I'm not sure if it's still the same but the Derwent around Matlock Bath was pretty much the same and I think you could only leger worms during the coarse close season, as opposed to float fishing.

I remember being taken along by some seniors as a kid and feeling as though I was robbing a bank...

Fishing on a river in the close season, the thought of it! :)

In the areas were worm fishing is permitted it has a history of using the upstream worm for trout which goes back hundreds of years together with the use of the art of fly fishing.
Regional Bylaws allow the use of the worm because it has a historic significance in the areas where it is allowed.

In the Severn Trent catchment area worms, prawns and shrimp are allowed to be used as bait during the closed season on rivers, there are different byelaws in different regions and all of them show how ridiculous the closed season is.

If I can find a link for regional byelaws I will put it on here but knowing my links it may not work :D

Just scroll down to find your region
