My congratulations to you Binka on catching such a beautiful fish.....You put in so many hours on the bank in all sort of weather so you thoroughly deserve your catch - in fact it was long overdue !!
Nice photo as well, although I have to say I thought you would be a little heavier..............................................add a winky smilie whatsit here..
Anyway, back to my session.....
It just doesn't do to go swanning off to the other side of the world for 7 weeks and expect to come back and pick up where you left off. For a start off, fishing the end of September ( my last session ) is entirely different to fishing at the end of November, but this isn't the truth of the matter as I think over those weeks of warm sunshine and wonderful food I became a little soft, with my usual sharpness ( ! ) a thing of history once back on the bank....
Yes, it was all wonderful; early mornings walking on soft sandy beaches looking out over the Pacific Ocean, climbing around headlands just to sit and enjoy the view for miles around followed by brunch, a good book and light chatter over afternoon tea. All of this is fine and dandy until ones thoughts turn to getting back home as the trip draws to a close.....
One begins to imagine still misty November mornings with a slight chill next to a river fining down to just the right flow and colour and a number of winter roach sliding over the net, and this within a day or two of reaching home. All of this day dreaming swirls around in ones mind, eventually reaching the point where it becomes reality and nothing else will do.
Unfortunately, life sees things in a different way and doesn't prepare you for the aftermath of seven weeks of pleasure, followed by several days wandering the streets of Singapore in 33 degrees and massive humidity together with jet lag, dragging suitcases around, airport lounges almost at freezing point, not to mention flight delays and grotty food.
I truly thought I was well rested and ready for anything, but three days of this had us ( I think the wife was still with me ) arriving back at Heathrow at 6am in a state something akin to wet dishcloths, a state which continued for the next two weeks, and, I might add which still includes afternoon naps and waking in the middle of the night !!
'Ready for anything ' was not on the radar.............
Fishing? Oh yes, I did manage this last weekend to finally pop down to the tackle shop and buy some bait, and yes, I did manage to drag myself from a warm bed with fishing in mind - not to the river ' fining down with a tinge of colour ' of my dreams, but to a protected little still water where the chill wind would be reasonable. I did not expect to catch an awful lot ( one has to take things in stages as my trip proved ) and I wasn't disappointed........
I started with a cup of tea for warmth and then managed to put together some sort of rig that might produce the odd roach or two. The second cast produce an 8" roach and this, over the next 4 hours to be followed by at least 20 perch, none of which reached 10" long. I loose fed maggots - not the best thing with small perch around - and fished at all depths down to around 8', finishing overdepth with a little light crumb which, at the death, produced another roach of similar size. That was it......
Of course, I didn't really expect anything more, but at least I made it to the bank and thoughts of said sunny beaches and watching fly fishermen land very large trout banished to history.........
It was all fantastic while it lasted, though....................
ps I'm pleased to say the winter gear is now out and washed, the extra flask cleaned and I'm ready to go again ( on consecutive days ! ) this coming week...Cold weather? bring it on !!!
pps New Zealand is a wonderful country with people who made us welcome wherever we went. We managed to drive 3000km over the 7 weeks, so we saw a lot more than most New Zealanders will ever do - at least that's what they told us !!
