Cracking pic Steve lol.

Cheers Ian...

The flight times were a bit rough but I just made it there and back in time to be able to start the "chub-gate" scandal.

I forgot to say earlier that the netter chub was 11lb 9ozs :wh

Piking again on the reservoir today - nearly had a female sparrowhawk fly into me as it glided about 2ft above the grass path, it only saw me when I waved my arms to get to fly around me instead of hitting me.
Still just one bite - a pike of 17lb on the regular single hook rig baited with a sprat.

Another run down the A1 this morning to get onto the non tidal Trent. My last trip out for a zander when I blanked was a distant memory, but I failed again , maybe to a bad sudden drop in water temperatures that hit the river yesterday and to a lesser degree on thursday, the wind was raw and I had the brolly up for the first time in weeks to break the chill.
Two baits out with the odd twitch back and couple of recasts just couldnt tempt the zeds.
Maybe they had simply moved away elsewhere.
Anyway, always another day as they say.
The car was covered in mud when I came off the muddy fields so I called in a carwash nearer home . The attendant was from some far off place and when I gave him my money he was looking at my gear on the passenger seat, rods n stuff and he asked if I had been fishing, I told him I had and he said would I let him have some as he liked them very much ---- how do we answer that, I ask you ?.

---------- Post added at 20:52 ---------- Previous post was at 20:36 ----------

Had a tough one today in terms of bites, the river looked spot on but rose a couple of inches with what I suspect was very cold rain water from the heavy sleet like showers around these parts yesterday.

It wasn’t helped by the fact that I was trotting and all I wanted to do after the first hour was get out the river and sit down but I made the most of travelling light by giving three different swims a go with two different set-ups, the standard stick and the heavy Avon on the long rod and it was the middle swim which produced a handful of chublets along with one netter and a gudgeon.

No pics as the banks really were mud fest following the receding waters of the last few days and it was all I could manage to stay upright so here’s a picture of a Canadian power station instead, complete with chain link fencing in the foreground…

Work that one out! :w
Pull the other one Steve, thats West Burton power station on the Trent just above Gainsboro.
Trying to divert anglers away from the upper reaches down to my end are you!.
Lol.

I got out in the wind and rain today. Rain for starters served up followed by a brisk wind in the face which made me wuss out and pack up just before dark. Can't complain as I managed a big dace 1lb dead on as they always seem to be for me, quite a few chub with a solitary 3lb'er and one sole 5lb barbel which lead me a merry dance on light gear. Lots more dace and roach and even a few perch to show it wasn't actually that cold, but it felt it by the end of the day.

Fished a 23 peg silvers only bash on a lake in Essex. Started on the pole and expander @ 13m. A few plip roach and wafer skimmers later I was getting battered by my neighbouring pegs. Soon the wind strengthened to the extent I couldn't control my pole. Out on the bomb and single dead maggot and a string of big skimmers in the final 3hours saved my bacon (a bit)
Weighed in 11lb:14 for nowhere...:(

I like to think the recent sudden bouts of cold rain responsible for the lack of roach as the usual rigs and baits tend to produce a few more fish than of late....

On Friday last I fished a small still water instead of a river in conditions that were really quite pleasant. Not quite balmy but part of a mild trend in the weather which suggested the fish should feed to some extent. The reliable 12' Matchpro / 'pin combination together with a long antenna float and 20 hook just off bottom along with maggots of colours various plus casters seemed a good way to go, but the fish had other ideas. I caught fish from the off in the early morning in the form of 8" roach, but this ceased almost as soon as it started and I ended up catching small perch one after the other. I tried punched bread which works ( sometimes ) on the venue without result....
Yesterday, because it was raining on arrival I plumbed for the same swim because of it's familiarity ( and because I just fancied it again ! ) only this time I failed to find roach or even a perch for two hours, and then had four one after the other, although this was only achieved by a change in tactics. I decided, in desperation, to come up in the water to around 5' deep, move all the shot under the float and fish ' on the drop ' with just a couple of No8 /6 shot down the line. The retained long antenna float took an age to settle in it's final position, but as it did so the float just continued down ward on four occasions to produce the roach. Nothing of any great size but I was pleased my bit of lateral thinking had produced results !

As to baits ; One day was maggot with no interest in caster whatsoever, the other just the opposite when they enjoyed the ' handlebar ' fished caster and ziltch on maggot despite every effort.........

Was the weather responsible ( cold rain had fallen overnight ) or was it the fish just being fussy and finicky - who knows, eh ?

Anyway, both enjoyable days and very good to be abroad, even in the continual drizzle and gusty wind....so good in fact that I shall repeat it all again this coming week and on into Xmas.

I hope all you regular contributors have a great one and all the best for the New Year ! Let's hope the weather stays mild enough to make it worthwhile to cast a line.....( notice I didn't mention catching fish !! )

Mate

You know that's the lake where Martin Gay caught those big Carp from lol

You never got battered as much as me, I was up the center spit mate and think you was opposite me ? I had 8lb something and the bloke next to me had a bit less, some top class anglers there yesterday mate, Maver and Drennan Sponsored amongst them.

Did any of the Golden pegs go ? think there was 3 pots with £500 in each.

I stuck to my plans and took the lure rod out for a few hours although I had to think twice about it when I looked out the window at six o’clock and the car was white over, it was frozen solid with what later registered as just one lonely looking degree on the dashboard display.

I had already resigned myself to a blank too as the river was a couple of feet up and still rising with heavy colour, not the ideal conditions for a spot of lure fishing I guess but I did want to get out if only for a few hours and the packet of three Aldi lures, which had sat in my bag unopened for the last three years after I had won them in a raffle, finally got cracked open for the bright Fire Tiger pattern which was in there.

Despite the humble price tag of £3.99 for the pack of three it still seemed the best way to go despite having a fair few, not so brightly coloured, other (and far more expensive) lures with me.

I have to say that it was one of those typically pikey looking mornings, a white frost on some parts of the ground and a thick mist which lingered throughout the morning on a damp day that really didn’t seem to want to get light and so I set about going through the motions by underarming the lure into various likely looking parts of a small bay.

I had been at it around ten minutes and was just about to lift out when low and behold the long white flank of a decent female came twisting up out of the depths, she almost beached herself as she grabbed the lure and despite my surprise I think I had her in the net within five seconds.

With plenty of soft ground I didn’t even bother with the mat and took a quick snap before weighing her in at 16lb 10ozs and by far the biggest fish I’ve caught on my rare and generally cack-handed attempts with the lure…

I’m still not sure who was more surprised, me or the pike?

I had planned to set off back home as soon as the rain moved in or around early afternoon as I’ve got a couple of heavy days at work before I finish on Tuesday until the New Year and as it happened the rain and early afternoon coincided around the same time and so that was me gone…

And feeling quite chipper about the whole morning despite my forecast for a certain blank.

Jammy git! :w

Club match on the Colne at Uxbridge Moor and another rock hard day there.
On same peg as two weeks ago when lost a couple of big chub. Set up for them from the off today, 5 no 4 stick with 0.13 and size 18 B911, maggot feeder rig the same and bomb rod with a size 8 for big baits. Forgot to take cheesepaste from fridge which reduced the big bait options a bit,
Started on big lump of flake to see if there was a mug fish there. There wasn't. Stick produced only the odd minnow and basically spent the next few hours chopping and changing between stick and feeder with the odd 5 minute look on bread or lobbie for little reward- the days only excitement came when a pike of about 5lb attacked the feeder on the retrieve and contrived to hook itself in the fin in the process. Pity it didn't count but at least I got to use my landing net. With an hour and a half to go stepped up the feed quite a bit for chub o'clock but the only result was a greatly increased number of minnows which does tend to suggest that there were no chub there.
Ended up weighing 0-10-8 for 4th. (! ); 6-0, one big chub and a couple of minnows on the feeder, won it from Pops Corner, then 2-5 and 1-14. No blanks but plenty of odd ounces...

Fur and Feather next week on our other Uxbridge stretch. Weights should be a lot better but the Colne is getting very unpredictable. We've been asked to all wear silly headgear so it looks like my Sami reindeer herder's hat might be getting an airing,,,

Had to scrap for a few small fish this weekend. A short visit to club lake and I was hoping for a december crucian but only managed a smattering of iffy bites for perch and roach. First cast was a perch of 8oz. They all got steadily smaller then on.
Wading the river today to access a couple of reliable swims. I've been finding fish difficult to locate lately on the river. Thankfully a string of chub to 2lb kept me entertained, trotting flake under a chubber. The water started to rise again and turned a very grubby grey as light fell. Way too much rubbish coming down to have much fun. My bail arm chose to fail and I took that as the signal to get home before my feet went solid.
Hoping for better as things fine down. If I can get to the bank.
