Nice fish Mike but where’s the 10lb Tench?

They alledgedly reside in another venue John which I have not visited recently as it affords no shade whatsoever ! I still have them in my sights and as soon as the weather breaks I will be back in hot pursuit! Today was overcast but hot and humid!

Today's venue does have tench and I have caught a few but they are only around 2lb! I do like crucians however!

Today I was talked in to a gravel pit stalking session with the intent of taking some carp off the top. We started off in intermittent cloud, then a few of hours of non-stop sunshine with some more intermittent cloud cover from around 2pm (very warm from midday). Unfortunately there were not nearly as many fish cruising as some weeks ago during an earlier warm spell (when we caught quite a few) and the ones we stalked were not interested in freebies (too busy sunbathing). So trusted plan ‘B’ came into play with a small piece of artificial bread gently lobbed a few yards in front of any spotted fish – no loose feed, just the single bait on a suicide mission.

Not the most productive of sessions, plenty of casting, plenty of waiting, plenty of walking, a few near misses, that great feeling when the water explodes and 3 fish. As I didn’t intend to cast more that about 50 yards, the fish were all taken within 30’ of the bank, I used a 1.5t/c Harrison Avon Specialist, 5000 AeroGTE, 8lb ProGold, a small Fox bubble, 6’ of (Vaselined) .19 Reflo hooklink with a size 10 B911X at the business end. Arrived early to fish from 9.30-3.30pm.

11 codgers turned out this morning for our weekly knock up on the GUC . Unfortunately my peg wasn't in the shady part where I fished Tuesday, when the sun burnt through the cloud I had it on my back.

image.jpg

Started on wagg and magg across on the far shelf, like Tuesday it was small chub a chuck until they predictably vanished once the sun hit the water.. The roach and skimmers came on after that until they too faded away. The final 2 hours I concentrated on the deep track with punch and liquy taking small roach virtually every put in...

End peg by the lock to my left took first place in the frame with some bigger skimmers, a chub of 1lb plus bits for 9lb:6. 2nd place had skimmers and bits 8:6 next peg to my right...

I had 4:3.

There you go Mr Meldrew, I can make the effort when meeting friends - mind you they were there at 7........................

Lol BB, not bad then really, only 2 1/2 hrs late :).

I don't blame you, i'm in the same mind set as you about early morning angling.

Despite the rain Gordon (wetthrough ) and I met up on the other club/dayticket water in pursuit of those large tench which it is supposed to contain ! We set up on the float and hoped for the best despite the welcome but persistant rain!

Gordon can just be seen fervently watching his float for the uplift of a tench. There were plenty of bubbles about but the tench were sadly conspicuous by their absence! We had good conversations and enjoyed our day with honours even! Gordon had a nice Greys Toreon 13' float rod with a Shimano 4000 stradic c14 and I paired the same reel to my 14' Hardy rod! We tried a multitude of baits with none proving conclusive as the most wanted!

An enjoyable day and thank you Gordon for your company! I hope you found your way home! Why are fishing venues so difficult to find? As I type the heavens have opened here and it's bucketing down! No watering tonight!

Mike's conveniently forgotten to mention the three Mirrors around 6lb and a nice big bronze he caught to my one 5lb Mirror and usual bag of Roach.

Great day Mike. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Dear Deidre

I fished my usual haunt today in search of one or two of the Carp that i hooked and lost last week while fishing Tench.

I used heavier tackle from the off this morning with large cubes of Spam as bait, plenty of Carp showing in my swim rolling and fizzing so i was confident of catching Carp, unfortunately the Carp didn't want to be part of my plan and all i could catch were more of these.

I caught ten of them all told.

I have no idea how to contact the carp that were there, shall i fry the Spam in garlic? should i use boilies? i don't know what to do as the other Carp i hooked and lost were all on meat but smaller pieces that i cant fish on heavier tackle.

I shall try again but i am not confident your help and advice would be appreciated.

Frustrated of Warwickshire.

Ok, tomorrow you target the tench! :)

Nice haul though, I’d put up with that problem all day long.

On another thread I mentioned I was out today to fish the whip, primarily to catch small roach and rudd in an exclusive tench and crucian lake, for transferal to an adjacent silver fish lake. Well as Rabbie used to say "The best laid schemes o'mice and men gang aft a-gley". Arrived at a peg I have fished many a time, with good results, to be presented with this:

Floating weed and surface scum. I had intended to fish on the whip on the drop with a 5 No 10 stots float. However this would not break through the film of scum and weed so I used a heavier rig on the short (6m) pole and dropped it in "down the plug hole". I did not get many sliver fish just plenty of these:

I finished up with 54 tench and crucians and 31 roach and rudd. So objectivly not too successful, last time I did this I had 193 silver fish to transfer over. However still a pretty enjoyable morning. Pete

It was very much an on/off affair for me today, I had originally planned on an eagerly awaited trip out with one of our esteemed but due to circumstances beyond my control I reluctantly had to cancel although I’m very much looking forward to rearranging it for another date.

That resulted in me effectively losing the first few hours of the early morning and also having a kilo of worms on my hands and inspiration came in the form of a chance phone call from nottskev and where a plan was soon hatched to fish my (largely overlooked of late) local club water just a couple of minutes up the road from me.

The rivers aren’t the only places that are suffering from a lack of water at the moment, when I arrived I found that the lake I had planned to fish was closed due to a low water level and so I chose another and one that I had yet to fish.

It was around 2pm by now and Kev would shortly be travelling over to spend what turned out for me to be a very pleasant afternoon in great company and I had already set up a small waggler on the edge of a lily bed where I had put in an initial helping of chopped worm and dead maggot before it was time to put the feet up and enjoy the afternoon.

It’s a tough job someone’s got to do it…

It was quite hot and sultry at this point, I would have taken that but the sun eventually broke through which pegged things back a bit on the bites side of things but I was getting a few and picking up the odd small fish and it wasn’t long after Kev arrived that I was right royally done by a fish which tore off into and through the lilies in double quick time.

I will point out at this point that I had taken two rods and 'pins and in light of the lily situation I elected to fish the heavier of the two.

Despite this happening on no less than two other occasions throughout the afternoon I did manage to put a few fish together, more notably after the sun had dipped below a line of tall Poplars on the far bank at around 5pm and these included two Tench of a couple of pounds each even though I think they were one and the same fish, a rather nice and wild looking Carp of 5lbs or so, a couple of small netter Roach, some skimmers/hybrids and a few small Perch in addition to this rather handsome one…

Most people's arguments regarding keepnets are based around fish welfare but mine is based purely on the fact that without one it's possible to catch the same fish twice and count it as two ;)

I packed up around dusk and reflected on what had turned out to be quite a magical afternoon in many ways and certainly something from nothing when you’ve spent it catching a few fish whilst enjoying good company and conversation which was only ever really interrupted on the occasions when the lilies began to tremble and those fizzing bubbles began to appear around the baited area.

Cheers Kev… :w

Had a stroll along the Colne downtown this afternoon to look at the state of it. Surprisingly it wasn't as low as I'd imagined and had both colour and flow.
Went home and prepared some roving gear then returned around 6pm. Set up 10' Forcemaster with a simple running 3\4oz flat lead and a size 12 hook with a hair rig bait band. The swim was around the average 3' deep in the middle.

Banded an ellipse type pellet, chucked it and hoped.....

Almost immediately had a sharp rap on the tip which was probably a chub mouthing the pellet, then a slow pull round and drop back which was a crayfish grrrr. Chunk bitten from the pellet..

As it got darker around 8:45 I had a proper bite, tap tap pull round.

Beats blanking....

As I packed up it started raining quite hard, got soaked walking back to the car.

Not much to say about yesterday, just a couple of hours on the jetty, first time this year. Tried the paternoster method of float fishing with a couple of sand eels but it didn't work out well, sea too choppy and tangles, needs a rethink and no reports of any mackerel caught yet anyway.
However, one bloke stopped for a chat who did a bit of fishing and I got his life story. A gypsy who used to buy old boats from Spain and bring them back here and do them up to sell, one boat blew up in the Bay of Biscay apparently (Arthur Daley of the boat world and you get the picture) and his brother ran girls in Soho who now lives in Brazil where he has also bought a house but he lives in a caravan in this country! Had a good old chat for half an hour which was a bit of light relief from the no fish and Satan's hordes trying to nick my bait and sandwiches. I have a plan for them, a pump action water pistol/rifle, seen one in a shop somewhere; always have a plan.
Might try again with my left over bait over the weekend.
