Perch, pike and poetry, fishing doesn’t get any classier than that. :)

Enjoyed a very pleasant three mile walk along the great Stour Way earlier today. The walk started in the urban environments of the city and within a few strides you find yourself walking through marshland, urban to rural in a few moments of time.

Gave me a chance to run in my new Chinese braid and the perch were very obliging, snatching at my 1” shad

Had a couple of dozen with only one needing the net. One Jack also fell for the rubber lure and boy was it angry, wasn't about to have its pic taken without drawing blood so thought better of it.

The skies turned leaden with rumbles of thunder over Chartham way, a good moment to leg it back to the car.

Is that a telescopic landing net handle John? I see you use a Korum quick change cam! They are fine save for the bigger and heavier fish and then they disintegrate!

Yes Mike, it is a telescopic handle made by Daiwa, lovely piece of kit and ideal for roving along the river. Had to get it via Pecheur, nothing available in the UK at the time.

I have no problem with my Korum quick change adaptor, something else I find really useful when wanting to weigh a fish quickly. It’s paramount that you don’t exert any pressure on it from a heavier fish, just grab the frame of the net as soon as it’s in grasping distance. I went as far as buying a second one just so I could change between two different net sizes quickly, only to find they’ve changed the size of them, grrrrr.

I had the same problem ! The cam is now smaller but longer! I always except for small fish lift the net by the frame but a 15 lb carp caused it to disentegrate nonetheless ! The thread pulled out of the housing! It was replaced and must have worn over the last year or so!!

Ps no fishing this afternoon as it is raining heavily but there is always tomorrow !

Well I managed a quick hour or so at the local lake. Never actually fished it before, it runs down the side of the River Colne, and I usually fish the river. However was chatting to a guy the other day who said he had some little Carp.

So today I came down armed with a float rod and some light gear. Baits were bread & sweetcorn, through a bit of my method mix in when I got there. Result was around 10, maybe a dozen little Carp, in pristine condition, even included a baby mirror....

When I have a bit more time I'll be down again for a bit longer. (for those that are local to me - This is Little Britain - It does actually have some fish in it!!).

And in good nick too it seems. My brother was down at LB stewarding again yesterday and again it fished its head off. The place is stuffed with little carp which I cannot believe were stocked....must have been a couple of extraordinarily succesful spawning years.

Having noticed the boats on my local canal had moved around a bit and my fave peg was free, I was there like a shot.
The supermarket on the opposite bank being a convenient place to view the situation without walking down with gear and being disappointed.

I was set up and fishing by 8:30 this morning.
Overcast and comfortably cool with low pressure it seemed perfect. Fishing magg and wagg bites were slow but I was happy to be where I've fished since my early teens..In those days there was a boatbuilders yard opposite.

As you can see, it rained around 10am but soon stopped. By lunchtime my back started to ache, 3 days sat on a seat box was taking it's toll so I packed up.

Had a few anyway.....

Had the lake to myself this morning so having the choice of any swim I headed for where I would yet again try for a margin Carp.

The plan was to fish for the Tench but to keep an eye out in front of the bush while feeding cubes of meat 2/3 every 5 minutes and not to fish it until I saw signs of fish on the swim, its 2ft deep and weedy with small clear patches. My float can just be seen laid flat if you look hard enough.

Lots of carp on the surface but hadn't seen anything close in although I might have done had I purchased some polariods from Aldi (bink recommended I have some now)

Had 9 Tench and then it went dead so I concentrated on watching for carp and not fishing, some were drifting into the swim but I couldn't see them feeding, decided to flick a bit out just in case, it shows how little can be seen even in water that shallow as it was only in a couple of minutes before it went, only a little un but I didn't care after all the hours trying to catch one.

A bit more feeding and watching and this one came along, I saw it come into the swim but didn't see it take the bait.

Both fish were parrot mouthed, not nice.

Just got back from our mini holiday near Skegness. On Sunday we tried the main fishing lake, which seems to be full of carp that have no fear of being caught. Eldest child caught first, and her rod was going in while we photographed the fish, but as usual she doesn't want her pic on the internet.

Youngest child does.

I was wondering, some say it was stocked 2 years ago, others say it wasn't. Still, they were in great condition, and it was an hour of fun, and I hope to repeat later this week. Not sure whether to take maggot or not, I may have to fight through the little Perch to get to the Carp....

Looking at the mouths on some fish it's quite obvious the waters are barbless!

Been back to the "secret lake" and now I doubt carp are in there. Saw MANY pike rolling, Rudd topping and perch hunting but no sure signs of anything else. Big,big rudd in there. I think that is what i mistook for carp. I was catching steadily on every bait i used (on the pole). I started on maggots but thought I would try bread, pellets and sweetcorn. all baits were great. sweetcorn bagged the biggest and maggots attracted the smallest.
I am working on the idea that the main 2 species are Ruddand pike as 99.9 of the fish caught were Rudd of all sizes. I left my rod and reel set up to a hair rigged chunk of pepperoni then changed to meaty boilie, worm and a dried lump of bread. anything too big to fit in the Rudds mouth was not taken.
I also managed a "trip" to the oxford canal recently, I didnt use a keepnet as I was taking a mobile approach and just putting my float anywhere that looked fishy. It went remarkably well with a nice little hybrid gracing my line and a little fledgling white collar dove that needed a home. I nursed him back to health and he flew away earlier today.

photos of a pike from my last hdygo post, the dove, the hybrid and my friend "novice angler/hates fishing" managing to ruin my photo of him fishing the secret lake by having the float so close to the eye that I want to scratch my eyes out every time i see it. Imgur: The magic of the Internet

I spoke to the bailiff about both of these fish and he told me that the commons in the water were from another water the club has, apparently they were removed after the club took the water over.

Hi Dave

Good to see you and the kids enjoying your fishing together.
Brings back memories of when my son fished at that age.
He doesn’t go anymore he stopped when music took over at an early age.
Make the most of it they grow up so quick.

Thanks Steve, we might be off crabbing this afternoon so if that happens there might be some more catches to report!

Crabbing....just the best fun ever. My kids loved it and I dare say still do. One time down at Brixham Harbour my daughter had not one but two respectable sized eels on the crab line. Hysterically funny really doesnt do it justice......one of my all time best ever memories.

I had a few hours on my local day ticket water! I set out to catch roach on the float and to avoid carp and I succeeded ! 16 roach around 6 to 8oz and all caught on meat! The bream turned up and I caught 5 around 3lb again on meat! I tried maggots and caught a few tiddlers!

I like the matchpro coupled with the stradic reel and plan to put them to good use tomorrow when I meet up with Markcw and Wetthrough for an interesting days fishing and discussion! I also plan to try my new bomb rod( Binka will know the one!!!)! Three guesses!!!

Tigger, I thought you said that Barbless hooks cause hidden damage and not the gaping holes that you sometimes see where the fishes missing lips should have been which you tend to find both on barbed and barbless waters (but mostly when barbed hooks are used) especially when there are a few novice anglers who don’t know how to unhook their fish properly :wh:)

Sorry for going a bit off topic everyone :(

Keith
