It's called a glossy or Cape Starling if I recall correctly . A very common bird in South Africa.

The very first fish I caught on the Hardy Marksman Specimen 13' Float Rod!

I bought it to fish for Tench up to some dense pads, not the stringy stemmed stuff but those that have the girth of your forearm and it was loaded up and fished on the 8lb maximum line rating straight through.

As good a battle as they come, that thing that looks like a large green butterfly is a piece of shredded lily pad, many of which were strewn across the lake afterwards but it never got into the really thick stuff.

I don't have a picture of the swim from the day but it does appear in the following picture, in the background of a photo from another session...

Lazing away a late Summer afternoon on a day ticket stretch of the Trent, bare minimum of gear and rod butt tucked into rocks whilst easing back and trying my luck laying on a bait wherever took my fancy in the hope that the Barbel would oblige.

You can make out the black tipped Avon float, holding back nicely, just left of the centre of the picture...

Id have had to have gone to specsavers if i hadnt seen that lol....

More river pics

My favourite grayling stream

A pretty river that's has some wonderful hatches and if you time it right the dry fly fishing can be fantastic.

Some fish from the river Lot over the last two years. Great fun for myself, wife Sally and fishing buddy Alistair.

Alistair with his PB barbel.jpg

My wife Sally caught this on a very light spinning rod, she would not touch it!

We moved here late 2017 and I doubt we will ever leave. Wonderful region, lovely river and some great fishing! Just have to get through this lockdown like the rest of the world.

This was a good few years back, I was trotting on the last day of the season when a little tourist couldn't resist maggots...
